Center Lake
Editor, Times-Union:The Center Lake watershed has many atypical hydrologic features due to alterations that have taken place with regard to manipulation of surface water connections. Water enters Center Lake from groundwater contributions and springs. It also enters the lake from surface water contributions from Tippecanoe River and Lones Ditch (outlet from Pike Lake), Walnut Creek back-flow and through a storm sewer connection from Pike Lake.
Center Lake Conservation Association has contracted professional services in conducting an engineering feasibility study for permanently closing the north flow gate (Tippecanoe River & Lones Ditch inflow), installing a back-flow preventor on Minor Road Culver to eliminate flood waters backing up into Center Lake (Walnut Creek back-flow), block the storm sewer connection from Pike Lake, and install trash and grit separators in storm water inlets along Ind. 15. A watershed diagnostic study was performed in 2003 for Center Lake and is the resource of these recommendations.
The current study was to determine the feasibility of the anticipated construction projects and prepare for physical design of recommendations and determinations, which are outlined below:
Permanently closing the north flow gate; Determination: Not Feasible.
Install back-flow preventor on Minor Road Culver; Determination: Though physically possible cost ($50K -$70K) deemed it: Not Feasible.
Block the storm sewer connection from Pike Lake; Determination: Not Feasible.
Install trash and grit separators in storm water inlets along Ind. 15; Due to expanded scope this objective is undetermined at this time.
What's next for Center Lake?
Thankfully, Dale Long, CLCA VP and Channel Committee chairman, has agreed to monitor the north control structure in place and sponsor the channel Sediment Removal Application and potential project work in 2007; Charlie Wheeler has kindly agreed to sponsor the Aquatics Plant Plans and Herbicide Treatment Application and potential project work in 2007; and with IDOT, I will sponsor a LARE application to determine the feasibility of installing trash and grit separators in storm water inlets along Ind. 15.
Recreational users, visitors, lake front property owners, residents of Warsaw and others interested in Center Lake's future can support the health and conditions of the lake by becoming a member of CLCA, a 501(c)(3) corporation. Please e-mail [email protected] or call 574-371-4804 for more information.
We thank IDNR and the city of Warsaw for their help in keeping Center Lake a great place to be.

Reform Or Else
Editor, Times-Union:Re: Twilight Zone
Spoken like a true corporatist, Mr. Goldenberg. No Nazism, fascism, racism, isolationism or protectionism for us.
Our troops are in the Middle East protecting our freedoms. We know that, don't we, Mr. Goldenberg?
We've all come to the collective conclusion that the advance of civilization just won't happen due to the alignment of natural occurring phenomenon.
Diplomacy won't work. All the sugar in candyland will not alter the nature of the descendants of Ishmael. They must be forced to surrender their power base.
We've collectively concluded it's time for the Islamic reformation. So we bomb their cities, break down everyone's door in the neighborhood, shove a Whopper in everyone's kisser, and suggest they either download or die.
Imagine the audacity of someone comparing us to the Nazis. Enjoy your new friends, enjoy the lakes, and above all, welcome to the neighborhood, Mr. Goldenberg.

Animal Lovers
Editor, Times-Union:I am amazed by the hypocrisy that has been shown by the self-proclaimed "animal lovers" in our community.
After graduating from college, I became director of the Animal Welfare League. I was convinced that I could improve sanitation, reduce disease, get area vets involved with spay/neuter programs, increase fundraising efforts, and most importantly, increase community involvement. I had some success, but soon discovered that people would rather criticize and point fingers than roll up their sleeves and help. I can't count the number of times that I heard, "I would love to go out and help, but it breaks my heart to see those animals." Did they think that it would help to just pretend that there weren't so many unwanted animals? Did they think that my staff and I were there for the money or the prestige? Did they think that our hearts didn't break every single day when we saw an abuse case, or had to euthanize an animal because we didn't have the funds to treat its illness, or because we simply didn't have enough cages?
And to those of you who think no-kill shelters are the answer, let me assure you that communities that have no-kill facilities also have county/city facilities that have close to a 99 percent kill rate. There are just too many animals, and not enough homes. And somebody has to make the awful decision to end an animal's life; unfortunately that falls upon shelter workers; those who put their time and energy where their mouths and hearts are, often ending their days in tears.
After two years of fighting a losing battle, I decided to leave while I was still able to take with me a small part of the enthusiasm that led me there in the first place, and while I could still see that glimmer of hope in the faces of those animals that we were able to place in loving homes, including the three that are now part of my family. To most visitors, the shelter is a less than desirable place - but to those animals who have never had a clean, warm bed; fresh food and water; compassion and attention, that place, however dismal, is a refuge. And that is why shelters exist, to save the animals they can, and to treat the rest with as much dignity as possible.
So what is the solution, many of you have asked? It really is quite simple: Volunteer; Donate; Adopt; Educate yourselves; Petition state lawmakers to write stricter laws concerning the treatment of companion animals; Stop funding puppy mills (yes, there are local people mass-producing puppies in inhumane conditions); Get your animals spayed and neutered; Encourage your friends and family to do the same; And stop criticizing the people that are on the front line fighting this heartbreaking battle everyday. Bottom line? Start being part of the solution, instead of being part of the problem. The animals will thank you!

Responds To Young
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is written back in response to local author Buck Young's Nov. 22 response letter to my Nov. 16 response letter to the pro-Nazi advertisement on page 6B of the Nov. 11 edition of the Times-Union that lists his novels "Adolf Hitler Jr., V.1 (Hunted)" and "Adolf HItler Jr., V.2 (Revenge)" plus four other strangely titled novels.
I will now respond to several statements made in Mr. Young's response letter.
1. "Mr. Houze prefers only the biased Jewish viewpoint about World War II, and has recommended 15 such books."
Response - First, I recommended 54 books at the Warsaw Community Public Library that deal with the subject of the Holocaust and was able to only list 15 of them due to the 500 word limit in the letters to the editor policy. Second readers of the Times-Union should also check out the many books at the Warsaw library that deal with the events before, during and after World War II that clearly account the accomplishments of the Allied victory over the Axis in World War II. Plus the faults and mistakes made by the Allies, as well as the sinister nature of the regimes of the axis nations and even the regime of our own ally the Soviet Union.
2. "But be aware that even the words 'Holocaust' and 'Nazi' were coined by biased Jewish writers. Within German those in power referred to themselves as the NSDAP or The Party."
Response - Based on "Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: Eleventh Edition and the Abbreviations Dictionary: Tenth Edition." The word holocaust has its origins in the 13th century and is an accurate description of what the Nazis did to the Jews and others during World War II. The word Nazi makes its first known appearance in 1930 and is a shortening of the German word Nationalsozialist. Which is part of the formal name Hitler's fascist party NSDAP-Nationalsozialische Deutsche Abreiterpartei (National Socialist German [Nazi] Workers Party).
3. "The sameness in those books Mr. Houze is recommending won't be found in the Adolf Hitler Jr. story, which Mr. Houze should have bought and read before condemning."
Response - I am sure your story Adolf Hitler Jr. has the sameness as such infamous works as "Mein Kampf," "Triumph of the Will," "The Turner Diaries," "Birth of a Nation" and various printed publications of White Aryan Resistance, the KKK, neo-Nazi groups, and the Christian Identity movement, so I do not see too much urgency to out and purchase your book and read it.
I will address your statements made about the war death toll in the 20th century and the differences and similarities between Fascism and Communism in another letter to the editor.

Supports Obama
Editor, Times-Union:Hi, Gary. Read your Saturday column every week and enjoy it. Your comments on Senator Obama identifies you as a republican since Obama is a democrat. You would not be digging up negative things if you were a democrat.
All people, or should I say most people, make mistakes sometimes in their lives and politicians pay heavy for them. Obama is clean!
I've heard Sen. Obama speak and I really like what I hear. He's a really good man just as John Kerry is a very good man.
Another columnist by the name of Cal Thomas helped ruin Kerry's chances in his run against President Bush in 2003.
See if you can find a copy of Thomas' column about Kerry in September 2003 - Times-Union. Old Cal went into the public records and said John Kerry failed to vote on this and that, a lot of times, and voted on things Thomas the expert said was wrong.
Isn't that what a politician does? What he thinks is right? Cal made it sound like a crime and helped swing the election to Bush and look at us now. Senator Obama of Chicago - Democrat and the best on the horizon by far.

Animal Control
Editor, Times-Union:Last week I called the animal shelter regarding an abandoned dog. They told me to call the animal control. I was hoping this poor dog could get shelter before the bad weather came in. I called the animal control after talking to the animal shelter. I gave them the information and they said they would call me back. I called again two days later. Now the weather is frigid, and I still have not heard from them. What can I do to help a poor defenseless animal, without trespassing and breaking the law?
