Tribute To Wallace

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to pay a tribute to a man that has been in the Warsaw community for many years: Jerry Wallace.

Jerry was a man that fit in the category with "Grandma and Grandpa Witmer." These were my grandparents and were the most gracious and loving people that I will ever know. Honesty and kindness was just a way of life for them.

This too, was Jerry. Jerry had time for friends and always a kind manner in helping any way he could. At times past my husband would be sitting in his chair at home and in would come Jerry with time for a visit and "cheer up" call. Always helping over and above what he needed to in any situation. We have, over the years, deeply loved this sweet, kind man and do send to all his family our deepest sympathy. Matthew 5:7-12.

Peachey Fund

Editor, Times-Union:
All of us at the Catherine Peachey Fund want to express our gratitude and amazement at what our community has accomplished in funding the Catherine Peachey Breast Cancer Prevention Endowment at the Indiana University Cancer Center. Through the generosity of the town of Winona Lake, our faithful underwriters, the many volunteers and the talents of our area quilters, Carolyn and Bob Condon will be delivering $300,000 to the Indiana University Cancer Center as an early Christmas present. This contribution for 2003 will bring the total of our contributions to the Prevention Endowment to over $700,000 and our total contribution to breast cancer research to over $3 million. The Indian University Cancer Center recently announced the first two prevention grants that have been awarded to Todd Skaar, Ph.D., for The Prevention of Breast Cancer by Blocking Tumor-induced Immunosuppression, and Bob Hickey, Ph.D., in order to Analyze Proteins of Postmenopausal Women to Determine Breast Cancer Risk. Even though this community has been committed to this effort for over 10 years - it is still a moving tribute to all of the women and families and their friends who have struggled with breast cancer and turned their energy towards being part of the solution.

The Just Peachey Christmas Boutique will be opening soon at Allen's Designs. The proceeds from the sale of the handmade items will all be eligible for the matching grant from Eli Lilly and Co. This will be the beginning of our effort to garner all of the matching dollars that are available through Lilly in 2004 - so here we go again! Peachey sends its love and appreciation to each of you who have made all of this happen for so many years.

Badly Treated

Editor, Times-Union:
I had the great opportunity through my union, the United Steelworkers to go to the march against the FTAA in Miami, Fla., Nov. 17-21. I could not believe how we as Americans were treated by the Miami police force, the police were dressed in full riot gear that was clearly designed to intimidate peaceful citizens of the U.S. who were trying to rally and protest the FTAA. We wittnessed outrageous show of force that led to arrest, beatings, tear gas and pepper spray. We were lucky as we didn't get arrested or hurt in any way.

Then when I get back to Warsaw I see a Fort Wayne newspaper article about a guy right here from Warsaw bragging about how much richer he has gotten since sending his work to China, and how he wants to talk other companies into going to China. What the hell is wrong with this man?

I ask, is this still America?

We as Americans must do all that we can to protect ourselves. Let us all stand up and be heard!

Thanksgiving Dinner

Editor, Times-Union:
The Silver Lake Community Thanksgiving Dinner was a huge success, not because of the number of people served but by the way people's hearts were touched. It was a wonderful day of fellowship for everyone who attended.

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to you, whether you donated food, money or your time. We could not have pulled it off had it not been for you! A special thank-you to the members of the Silver Lake Lions Club. You demonstrated that you are not just a service organization, you are people with huge hearts.

God's hand was felt so many times as we planned the meal and then again on Thanksgiving Day. Through a series of events, he led a couple in Leesburg to contact us to see if there was any way they could help. On Thanksgiving Day, he touched the hearts of people who just walked in offering to help in any way they could.

We are already planning ahead and making notes for next year's dinner. As the holiday season approaches in 2004, remember that we will be at the Silver Lake Lions Club building and you are welcome to join us. God bless and keep you.
