Horse Happy Ending

Editor, Times-Union:
We are writing this letter to thank all the wonderful people who responded to our previous letter about our son, K.C., and his horse Ivy.

We got phone calls, cards and letters from so many of you, some of which we know but most of which we don't. K.C. has saved each and every one.

He also got a call from a man that we didn't know. His name is Ben Butz. He said he and his wife, Pam, had a 3-year-old quarter horse mare that they would like to give to K.C. We didn't know what to say. We were strangers to this couple and for them to make such an offer was unbelievable.

We went to pick up the horse on Friday and K.C. really hit it off with her. She is a lot like Ivy. She is kind and gentle, has a good head on her shoulders, is beautiful, and most importantly, K.C. loves her.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and a particular thanks to Matt Gillis and his family for their special consideration.

As for Ben and Pam, we can't say enough. You are two wonderful people and you have put a smile on our son's face again.

Winona Alcohol

Editor, Times-Union:
This response is a bit late in regard to Saturday, Nov. 21, 1997. Mr. Gerard, you need to be a little more careful throwing around your knowledge of the Bible and how you perceive the interpretation that others back their basis of in views. In the Old Testament, the people lived by the law. No one was worthy of making sacrifices and atonement for our sins except for the high priest who, under stringent conditions and favor of the Lord, was allowed to enter the most holy place of the temple to offer sacrifices. Now Mr. Gerard, the New Testament allows us to live by grace.

When we accept Jesus as our Savior, our hearts become that temple that the high priests entered long ago. The apostle Paul instructs us that our bodies are the temple of the Lord and that we as Christians must abstain from anything that will make our bodies unworthy of the Lord to dwell. True, there was wine in the days of Jesus just as there are young children that drink wine in France today with meals - not everyone abuses it.

Winona Lake is silently understood by all that it is a town that must stand apart. I love living in Winona Lake. Although it is adjacent to Warsaw, the atmosphere cannot be compared. I am also as excited about the cleanup that is happening in this little town and some of the things that are to come. We have a wonderful college and seminary that is known abroad. This is the home of Billy Sunday. Although he is not Reverend Billy Graham, he is still a well-known evangelist with a rich heritage and love for this area. Where else do the police come racing after a car after dark for a loud muffler at the snap of a resident's complaint?

While I am quite certain that not everyone that lives in Winona Lake loves the Lord, they know and respect the heritage the town holds. Grace College places restrictions on the students to what activities are acceptable and others that need restrainment. What activities can we accept and still hold high our love for God and yet let the town go forward? If anyone else is thinking like myself, once you condone one innocent evil then the chain reaction will begin. What is to say that the proposed restaurant with the ability to serve alcohol (even restricting intake to customers) will be grounds for another liquor store to come to Winona Lake wanting a piece of the action?

I am certain that I am speaking for the majority when I say that we would love a new restaurant in Winona Lake that is family-oriented, serves the soft drinks and iced tea, is affordable and of good quality food. I just think that it (alcohol) is an overjustified evil that can work things into disaster, and it will happen. It might be different if there were no other fine dining even close to Winona Lake, but there is. If it is a worry of lost prospected clientele due to limited beverage, don't fret; if the rest of the meal is exceptional it won't even be missed.

Jail Visits

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing about a concern I have toward the strict limits placed upon visitation rights to those in the Kosciusko County Jail.

Recently, I have experienced the denial to support my loved ones in their time of incarceration. In one situation, my close friend was arrested and told she could have four visitors per month and to prepare her list.

Without exception, once a person puts down their four names, those would be the four names for the entire month. Talk about a limit!

As far as I'm concerned, people in jail need their friends and family the most during that crucial part of their life. They need love, care and the feeling that everything is going to be all right. They don't need to be restricted with just four of their friends/family per month.

I am eagerly convinced that the visitation rights should be changed to at least two different people per week. It's punishment enough to be in jail, but it's cruelty to take their only hope and sanity from them by taking away their friends and family.

Smoking Areas

Editor, Times-Union:
I am a nonsmoker concerned with the second-hand smoke at Wendy's fast food restaurant in Warsaw. Most of us have eaten at Wendy's and have greatly enjoyed it. Although I enjoy the food, I find it hard to tolerate the smoking arrangement. As we all know, the restaurant lounge is a single open room. One half of the lounge is a non-smoking area. There is no divider or wall to separate the two sections. Therefore, one party who is smoking could be seated at a table right next to a party who is not smoking. This is forcing a person who chooses to eat at Wendy's, and does not smoke, to be exposed to second-hand smoke. Not only is second-hand smoke dangerous to one's health, but it is very irritating while one is trying to eat. There is not much worse, to most nonsmokers, than to inhale cigarette smoke while taking a bite of a delicious hamburger. It does not bother me if people smoke, because they have the right to do so. However, I also have the right to enjoy a meal without the hindrance of smoke. Something should be done about this problem to ensure the safety and happiness of all customers, including nonsmokers.

Check Your Heart

Editor, Times-Union:
Allow me to begin by expressing my sincere thanks to the many friends who called with words of encouragement, prayed, or sent cards during my recent recuperation from bypass heart surgery. It was very, very much appreciated and contributed to a speedy recovery. I expect to return to my office by mid December.

The real purpose of this letter is a compelling need to alert men age 40-plus to have a simple medical test to assure there is adequate blood flow to the coronary arteries supplying the heart. It is in memory of the many friends - the Johns, the Rons, the Mikes the Steves - who I have lost because they never knew they were at risk or had the chance for the corrective surgery I experienced.

I don't care how many miles you jog or swim, how much you golf, bowl or play tennis, or even how much time you spend at a health club hoping to look like Mr. Universe; unless you have a computerized treadmill stress test you are flirting with danger, often fatal danger. Many times there are no warning signs or symptoms that you have this blockage, thus a heart attack and serious consequences.

Gentlemen, if you want to give your family and loved ones the best Christmas present possible, schedule this simple test with the proper medical specialist. If you have questions or need assistance, contact me and I will help you get the proper referral. Better yet, wives and mothers, you call me - I know you'll get the job done. Happy holidays.

Deserving A Recall

Editor, Times-Union:
The taxpayers and voters of Indiana deserve recall legislation.

If you have a corrupt mayor or council person or county commissioner in your area, do you know what you can do to have that person removed from office? Very little, if anything at all!

While other states such as Michigan have given their residents the power to recall elected officials, Indiana has no such legislation, which is an insult to the electorate.

The people, those who care enough about their local government enough to show up at the polls and vote, are the backbone of the community, the people local government is designed to serve. Those same people should have the right to recall elected officials who become corrupt or commit inappropriate actions while in office.

Recall legislation is not designed to allow a small group of people to throw someone out of office. The legislation would require a majority of voters in a community or district to vote to recall an official. In most states recall petitions are processed through the courts, a recall vote is granted or denied.

If an elected official is recalled someone from the same party is appointed or there is a new election and voters are allowed to elect a new official. It is not a simple process but it is a right the people deserve.

If you favor any form of recall legislation contact your local state representative or state senator. You can also write to: 291 Skylane Drive, #8, Plymouth, IN 46563. Your voice will be heard.

Recall legislation is a basic right the people of Indiana deserve. Make your voice heard!

Some Voters Don't Count

Editor, Times-Union:
Everyone knows that George Washington is called the father of our country.

How many know that Abraham Lincoln was elected to the presidency from an independent party that later became the Republican? How many know that the right to vote for women came from the efforts of a third party?

The Contract with America which the Republicans and some Democrat congressmen signed, was not their own ideas, but those of United We Stand America. UWSA became the nucleolus of the Reform Party. The fact that so many members of Congress defaulted on this contract was due to their associations with special interests.

Ross Perot is the founder of the Reform Party. This party could be strong. Not because of Perot, but because of the members; people that believe in the United States of America and its Constitution.

There are many people in this country that have the time and the money to get involved. Some of them do not find it a benefit to their own personal self-interest. Many others have given up on the system.

Isn't it odd that when the Reform Party had its convention in Kansas City (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), very little coverage was given by the media. And some of it was twisted.

The 4th of November was election day in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

Over 1,200 people ran on the Reform Party platform in the state of New York. A member in Virginia running for the office of lieutenant governor got over 10 percent of the vote. The state of New Jersey had a few Reform members on the ballot also. Nothing was said by any of the major media about these events.

Is there a good possibility that many of the voters in this country do not count?
