Bushwhacked Or Gored

Editor, Times-Union:
Consider this: Would you rather be Bushwhacked or Gored to death?

Voter Intent

Editor, Times Union:
During the Florida recount officials are trying to determine the "intent" of the voter as whether to count the dimples, pimples, etc.

Perhaps the voter had more intelligence than being given credit. They felt obligated to vote for the president, but could not force themselves to puncture that ballot for any of the presidential candidates. But proceeded to vote for the just as important local positions.

Thinking back, maybe that is what I should have done as well!

Scan For Votes

Editor, Times-Union:
After Al Gore loses the recount of the recount of the recount, his next move should be to invent an optical scanner to determine if Florida voters LOOKED at his name on the ballots. If they did, those votes must be counted. Maybe THEN he'll have enough votes to win!

Students' Rights

Editor, Times-Union:
Looking at the numerous "Letters to the Editor" about Warsaw Community High School should say something. Maybe not that it's such a bad place, but the fact that they make the school worse than what it really is. I believe the administrators should stop imitating Adolf Hitler when it comes to the students that attend WCHS. Their infinite controlling of students is making the atomsphere tense. In some sense, it really is a prison. They plan your schedule out for you, and tell you what to do. It's like they are raising cattle, with our newly introduced ID tags as our bran. I just figured an officer of the law, WITH a gun made me feel safe enough.

I believe it isn't the students who push other students, or even themselves over the edge. I believe it's the overly strict administrators who push students over the edge. When will parents realize that there is a problem with WCHS, and it's coming from the inside. The school should ease up before a potentially fatal problem occurs! They are more of a distraction to one's education than anything else.

Parents, ask your son or daughter how much they enjoy WCHS. Even a handful of complaints is enough to look into. School should be an enjoyment, not another despairing day into a place where one's freedom is stripped from them. I agree with rules, but not to the point where it restricts people's own personal freedoms!

Don't look on the outside of this problem, investigate. There has to be a reason why so many hard-working students feel that the school hurts more than it helps. I just hope that the school will let students enjoy more freedom, and stop making it a prison, or better yet ... a concentration camp! Administrators, get off your power trip and respect the student's rights!

I want to express my appreciation and thanks for the continued support in the recent election.

Electoral College

Editor, Times-Union:
I heard from a co-worker today and again tonight on NBC Nightly News that the Gore campaign is toying with the idea of trying to get Florida's 25 electoral votes invalidated. If successful, they would then insist their man be declared the winner because he would have more electoral votes than Gov. Bush.

While he would admittedly have more votes than Bush, he still would not have the 270-majority necessary to win the presidency. In that case the 12th Amendment to the Constitution is explicit as to what the procedure would be: "The Electors shall meet in their respective States and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President ... The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President."

Categorically, if Al Gore were declared our next president with Florida's votes invalidated, it would be unconstitutional, and he would be an illegitimate president. But what else is new? Our Constitution has been trampled upon for many years.

Gore and his cronies hypocritically speak of upholding the Constitution. Uh huh. The only thing they want to hold onto is power. And they'll resort to anything to keep it. They'll go down kicking and screaming. Give it up, Mr. Vice President. For the sake of our country!

Note: The phrase "majority of the whole number of Electors appointed" also can be interpreted to mean a majority of however many electors are appointed - not necessarily all 538. If all 538 electors are not appointed, it would not be necessary to have 270 to be elected. If Florida's 25 electors are not appointed, for example, a candidate would need only a majority of 513 appointed electors to be elected.

Will Of The People

Editor, Times-Union:
The Will of the People Is Paramount--an essay

But they all cried out together, "Away with this man and release to us Barabbas," a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.

But Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they shouted out, "Crucify him!"

A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death; I will therefore chastise and release him." But they were urgent demanding with loud voices that he should be crucified.

And their voices prevailed.

So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted.

He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.

Silver Lake Apology

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to apologize to the Silver Lake Elementary school. I had written in to the editor a few days ago about an incident that happened with my nephew at his school, not Silver Lake school. I am sorry to all the parents that have called in to the school wondering if this was going on at Silver Lake and to all the staff at the school. I never meant for any of this to happen. The reason I didn't put in the name of the school was that my nephew would have had repercussion from this. This also has nothing to do with the possibility of the closing of the school. I personally do not want the school to close. I want it to stay open just as much as the other parents do.

So if you would please stop calling the school. Don't think that the teachers at Silver Lake don't care for your children that they are teaching. They do. Please accept my apologizes to everyone.

Political Irresponsibility

Editor, Times-Union:
After two weeks of turmoil, indecision and who knows how many taxpayer dollars, the Miami-Dade County commission just ups and decides to stop their recount. This is outrageous - we can put an astronaut on the moon, but these maladroits in Florida can't give up a holiday for a recount to determine the next president of the United States. As a native Texan, I have taken a lot of ribbing over the years. Nothing there compares to the three-ring circus and Chinese fire drills coming out of the Sun(don't)shine State. For the commission to arbitrarily and unilaterally decide to stop a court- authorized recount because they took their sweet time getting going and got put "behind the 8 ball" is about the most incompetent, unconscionable and unacceptable act of political irresponsibility since Watergate.

Absentee Ballot

Editor, Times-Union:
On Nov. 7, 1944, somewhere in France, I voted by absentee ballot in the presidential election. Now I wonder if my ballot was counted. After all, we had at that time a Democrat for president, as we now have. Slick Al is now being just like slick Willie.
