Be Thankful

Editor, Times-Union:
Maybe I am like the holiday turkey and putting my head on the block - but here goes.

I happen to think that President Bush is doing his job well. First of all, the accusation of him spending so much time away from the White House - a good manager does not sit in his/her office and ponder what needs to be accomplished. They are to be out touching the masses and letting the general public know what is going on with their respective business. A good manager needs to have a staff he/she can depend on and know how to do their jobs well. The manager's job is to oversee and check in and not assume it is happening correctly, but know for a fact work is getting accomplished. Because the stress and workload for management is huge, time away from a job is of the most important. It refreshes their brains, body and spirit.

So, President Bush is the manager of this country. It is a tremendous responsibility. Not too many people vie for the job or want it. It causes great stress on the family and spouse. As far as I am concerned, "W" is looking out for what he holds precious and taking his job very seriously.

We the public have no idea what comes across his desk everyday and we shouldn't. We would live in a constant state of frenzy if we did. The unimaginable strain this one individual handles is incomprehensible.

So since it is a time to be thankful, let's be thankful for a country where we are free to express our opinions. Where we live in actual homes and can roam the streets fairly sure we are safe. Where a trip to the market can delight us with all kinds of wonderful good things to eat and buy. Where the basic majority of us have some kind of job. Where I can believe in an almighty God who is the provider of all things. Or I can choose not to believe. We are so lucky. Don't let this time of the year pass by without realizing just how fortunate we are to live here. And thankful for those men and women who are serving our country to keep this world safe ... and let us pray with their families who live on the edge everyday waiting for their loved one to return home safe.

Take time this week and take a real look at your life and then give thanks, because no matter how bad it looks it could be so much worse. We just need to be ever grateful we live in this glorious country.

Timely Warning

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to thank the Times-Union for publishing John Davis' article last Saturday about "Anger, Hunters On the Upswing In Indiana." I was actually thinking about getting a hunting license this year to maybe bag a trophy to put above my mantle, but when I read that the woods are apparently full of angry men with guns I decided now may not be the best time to spend my spare time walking around in the woods. My thanks also go to Dr. Davis for his timely warning!

Coulter Confused

Editor, Times-Union:
I love Ann Coulter! That may sound a bit far out since she seems to just adore some of America's and the world's most reviled public figures. I am speaking specifically of Senator Eugene McCarthy. Senator McCarthy totally ruined many lives and served to bring to our attention just what you could do with "guilt by association."

Fortunately, Sweet Annie cannot remember back to those days when all that happened since she is so young. Her memory is so short and her knowledge of history so bad that I would not be at all surprised to see her clasp to her bosom the likes of Adolph Hitler and maybe even Idi Amin.

I still love her. She is one of God's children and we are commanded by God to love our neighbors. Sometimes it is difficult though. I pray that she will become a bit more educated and learn the difference between good and evil. She seems to be confused about those two terms.

Ethanol

Editor, Times-Union:
When I first noticed ethanol at the pumps, I saw a 60-cent-a-gallon lower price. Seeing a savings, I checked to see if my vehicles could use it. They can't. But I kept it in mind in case I traded vehicles. I thought, "At last, they're doing something about the big oil boys, to reduce the amount of oil we need." I heard many times of how it is cheaper to produce. How it would help the end-user. Looked like that is a good thing. However, current difference per gallon is only 9 or 10 cents. I guess the "ethanol boys" can gouge as much as the oil boys. Ethanol should allow us to use less oil. It just won't be a savings to the public.
