Health FoodEditor, Times-Union:
I would like to title this letter "Health Food." In competing in several chili cook-offs every year here in the United States, I have been introduced to another way of competing. The game is how many hot peppers (chilies) you can eat in two minutes. They always give away some serious coin in these competing events. The ingredient in the chili that makes our bodies lose moisture is capsicum. In researching capsicum, it is used both in culinary spice and as a hot new medical remedy. Long used as a food spice but also an aid to digestion, chilies were once thought to aggravate stomach ulcers. Researchers whose studies have indicated that the capsicum in these chilies may help prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots have discounted this fear. Now new research is focusing on this spice's ability to act as an anti-inflammatory agent, and aid in controlling pain. I know that taking anti-inflammatory drugs just to get out of bed and be able to walk can kill you. They can shut your kidneys down, if not caught in time. In my case it ws the needle in in the arm by the lab tech every two weeks until the numbers went down. I thank God for those lab people who draw the blood.
Think about this if you would. There is an eating establishment east of the courthouse. The proprietor normally wears black clothing, This establishment is known for its hot chili, and some of the radio personnel from WRSW found out just how really hot this stuff actually is. Could this food heavy with capsicum be keeping those who partake of said food item in better health?
Let it be known that this food should be consumed slowly to avoid distress and with care to avoid getting it in the eyes, as this can be extremely painful. Too hot for you? Maybe not - one spoonful will tell you, because it won't get any hotter with a second spoonful. Just like touching the hot stove, it's just as hot the second time. Sampling is the word here. My chili verde pollo can be ingested by an 18-month-old girl, or equipped as to melt your toenails, but still have really great taste. Remember to eat healthy, but those greasy burgers sure are good, aren't they?

Park Request
Editor, Times-Union:To the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Board:
On behalf of the American Cancer Society, we would like to submit a proposal for the use of the Central Park. Every year the American Cancer Society hosts a Relay for Life fund-raising event. This year we would like to offer the Relay for Life at Central Park. We have tentatively selected May second and third. This is a 24-hour signature event for Kosciusko County that helps raise money for local cancer programs and celebrates the survivors in your county.
From our prior meeting with Janelle Wilson, we discussed the availability of Central Park and the pavilion and have the park reserved. We are seeking approval for the use of these facilities free of charge. Our request includes use of the stages, parking areas, Central Lake, pavilion, covered picnic shelters, the plaza, restroom facilities and electrical hookup.
In exchange, the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life committee will promote the Warsaw Parks Department as one of our $5,000 sponsors and will be included in all printed materials, medical relations, printed logo on the back of our shirts and mentioned in all the events associated with Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society will comply with all insurance requests, park rules and regulations. Law enforcement agencies will be on site along with medical personnel. All who are walking for the Relay sign a release of liability before walking.
We are looking forward to partnering with you to make this event a success. If we can provide you with any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Fair Coverage
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to thank Teresa Smith for covering the annual Kosciusko County Fair Association meeting, and to add a P.S. to it. As I begin to think about all of the coverage that our local and area media have given us, I would like to say on behalf of the fair association, thank you, for all the time and effort spent in helping communicate with our community the events that occur here on these grounds.
To each of you we say, thanks for a job well done.

Tolerance
Editor, Times-Union:Count me in, also. I just found out that I am a religious bigot, at least in the eyes of those who believe in tolerance except for those they disagree with. Then immediately all-inclusive tolerance becomes intolerance.
It is rather amusing and also amazing that a society that is on the cutting edge of tolerance is willing to call names and make accusations to those they cannot tolerate and force into their mold. The iron is that on the same day, Nov. 16, while Miss America is being described as a religious bigot for teaching sexual abstinence until marriage, another front page article is bemoaning the increase of AIDS.
Most people know that sexual promiscuity among heterosexuals, drug use and homosexuality are the three ways most likely to spread AIDS. With 40,000,000 people worldwide infected with the disease and 8,500 dying every day, it would seem we should be willing to use what we know to stop its spread, would it not? It is not true and we all know it that "the biggest way to help prevent HIV is to get educated." That is a half-truth. The biggest way to help prevent HIV is to practice sexual abstinence until marriage and monogamy following marriage.
According to Warsaw's paper, Times-Union, Nov. 16, only 13 percent comes from drug use. So immoral living is responsible for the lion's share of HIV and AIDS.
So why go after Miss America for her teaching of sexual abstinence until marriage and call her a religious bigot? We might come to the conclusion that there is a segment of society that would rather see the continuation of the spread of the disease than to admit and repent of their wicked lifestyles.
According to the Warsaw paper, Nov. 18, we have 450,000 registered sex offenders in this country alone. This is probably only the tip of the iceberg. Is it any wonder that the disease continues to spread?
We hear so much about how we must learn to love one another. It is not love that spreads a killer disease. It is self-centered lust. It is a total lack of any love and self-discipline; we are doing very little teaching on this subject.
Every man is, has been, or will be tempted by the world, the flesh and the devil. Possibly some are more tempted than others, in one way or the other, but all have known temptation. So why be intolerant toward one who walks away from temptation and teaches others to do so, and call her names and then cry about the spread of that which her actions and teaching goes a long way to prevent?
Why are we so afraid to admit that God's book, the Bible, is the one and only authority in the moral realm? This can only mean that we believe we are smarter or are a greater authority. Of course, this is absurd. If God says something is wrong, that means it is wrong. Spiritually intelligent people don't vote whether God is right or wrong.
We also need to realize that every "Thou shalt not" along the road of life (whether the road of life or the road our autos travel) is there for our good and His glory.
Miss America should receive our prayers and praise, not our criticism. It takes as much of the grace and power of God to keep one from falling as it does to rescue one after having fallen.

Love Your Neighbor
Editor, Times-Union:What ever happened to "but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." (Lev. 19:18b NLT), or "I love all who love me." (Proverbs 8:17a NLT) The Bible teaches Christians to love all people no matter what their sins may be. No one can tell me their lives are without sin, only one person walked this Earth without sin and that was Jesus Christ himself. Who gave the people of Warsaw the right to judge and/or cast judgment on homosexuals and their allies? Does The Bible not say, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Matthew 7:1-2 NIV). Therefore, do we as humans have the right to cast judgment? No of course not! Why then does the Christian community (community I am involved in) place sin upon people that are different? God created us all different, but in His image. Our quest in life is to embrace those differences, and build a culture around those differences.
All the Warsaw students involved in GSA want is a support group, just like people victimized by domestic violence. Support groups provide people with a way to learn about their own individual group and learn to cope with discrimination society puts on them. Homosexuality is misunderstood by many people, which is why the GLBT community must support each other. The GLBT communities, and its allies, have been working hard to overcome oppression, just like African-American slaves had to overcome slavery.
Condemning homosexuals, especially high school students that already have low self-esteem and problems becoming themselves in a world that pushes for everyone to become the cultural norm, isn't the answer. University of California at San Francisco's Center of AIDS Prevention Studies examined a 1996-1998 survey of 2,881 gay and bisexual men. Suicidal impulses were especially common among the working class - 33 percent of them had planned it and 22 percent had attempted it. (Posted Aug. 5, 2002 on www.gay.com) This study tells me that too many norms have been placed in our culture today. Homosexual people break that cultural norm and are therefore discriminated against. This discrimination drives many homosexuals to ending their lives. Do the people of Warsaw want to be responsible for the deaths of homosexual people because you are too closed-minded to see past homosexuality? How many people have taken the time to stop judging homosexuals and actually talk with a homosexual?
My advice to the people of Warsaw is to stop judging and sit down and talk to someone that is homosexual. Look into the world that most people will never see. Get to know a homosexual; you will soon realize that we are all the same.
I thought America had a come a long way from the days of oppression and discrimination of different people, but I was sadly mistaken.
My advice to the GSA is to keep strong!
Good-luck to the GSA,
