MDA Lockup

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Kosciusko County community for their incredible support during our Warsaw "Most Wanted" Lockup to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The event, held Nov. 14, pledged an overwhelming amount of $31,038! Special thanks to our Lockup participants who dedicated their time and efforts to raising funds for MDA's local patient services program, as well as their generous contributions.

A large part of the success of the event is due to various local businesses and community leaders that sponsored and supported the event. I would like to thank the Warsaw Fire Station #2 for hosting the event, Centennial Wireless for donating phones and air time, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and the Warsaw Police Department for providing "jailbird" transportation. MDA would also like to thank Hacienda, Pizza Hut, Applebee's, Subway, Pizza King and Wal-Mart for donating the food for the "jailbirds."

The top three "jailbirds" from the event include

n Jason Shultz from Biomet Inc. raised $1,267.

n Jim Haller from Biomet Inc. raised $1,265.

n Roger Coldren from Roger's Auto Center raised $1,555.

It's been proven to me time and time again that the Kosciusko County community cares enough to make a difference. The dollars raised from the event translate into direct local patient services that benefit families who live right here in Kosciusko County community. Support groups, our MDA clinic, MDA summer camps, assistance with wheelchair purchases - these are just some of the services MDA can provide because of your support and generosity.

Thank you for making a difference in the fight against neuromuscular disease.

Post Iraq

Editor, Times-Union:
Many people are trying to envision a post-Iraq. Such speculation from a biblical perspective is futile. Only God knows the future. In the matter of Iraq, God has left no room for speculation. In chapters 50 and 51 in the book of Jeremiah, all visions of a post-Iraq are eliminated.

Babylon is in fact modern-day Iraq. Jeremiah answers a lot of questions, many of which have been asked currently, as well as frequently.

1. Will the United States do this unilaterally?

2. How long will our troops need to remain after its defeat?

3. How much money will it take to rebuild Iraq? God's answers to these questions are quite clear.

1. No.
2. Not long.
3. Nothing.

Take A Stand

Editor, Times-Union:
Since we are all responsible for our own actions, how can it be that we should blame others if we take a wrong turn? The popular notion seems to be to start a club to reinforce that wrong turn. If our public schools are opening their doors to a gay-straight club, will they also let the KKK have a club, to explain their way of thinking, or maybe NAMBLA?

Parents who try to take a firm stand on moral issues are now labeled "narrow minded." In reality, parents must take a firm stand in this world that presents so many false teachings. It has always been our responsibility to teach our children the difference between right and wrong. My grandson learned a little verse that will be a lifelong guide.

No matter how you hope,
No matter how you try,
You can't make truth,
Out of a lie.

WCHS Musical

Editor, Times-Union:
Fall is here once again and that can only mean one thing: WCHS drama department's production and presentation of a musical. I speak for myself but I think others would agree, what a tremendous show and display of amazing talent. If you didn't see "Into the Woods," you missed a great opportunity to see and hear a truly great play. As always, I was "wowed" by great acting and serenaded by superior voices. This play, to say the least, is not an easy one to perform but it was done with finesse and determination. I was privileged to witness this production and it was obvious that a lot of hard work and long hours went into this show. Thank you, students and everyone else who had a part in making this production possible.

Thanks to the director who had a vision and saw it through to completion. The story line is true, kids certainly do listen and you are not alone. Thanks for sharing your talent that God has so richly blessed you with.

Thanksgiving

Editor, Times-Union:
Thanksgiving: (Webster's) "the act of giving thanks; a prayer of gratitude to God."

My family traditionally meets on Thanksgiving Day and Mom fixes a spectacular feast. Sometimes we invite someone that hasn't any family or no special plans for the day just to share what we have. Usually we hold hands around the table at noon and Dad says a prayer of Thanksgiving to God for the many things that we are blessed with. Sometimes we go around the table and each in turn says one thing we are thankful for. The year my lovely, young wife Melissa died, I decided not to go to family Thanksgiving. I didn't feel very thankful, but Mom put me on such a guilt trip I went anyway. I still didn't feel thankful but it made Mom feel better.

In October of 1863 during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln made a Thanksgiving proclamation that set the precedent for the national holiday we celebrate today. President George Washington proclaimed Nov. 6, 1789, the first Thanksgiving Day. However, there was no fixed annual nationwide festival until the Lincoln proclamation. The oldest known Thanksgiving Proclamation dates back to Nov. 28, 1723, and was issued by Lt. Gov. William Dummer, of Massachusetts.

In closing I want to share the first and the last paragraph from Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving proclamation. The last paragraph is particularly fitting to our nation right now. I hope you appreciate it as I did.

"The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

"I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

"In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

GSA

Editor, Times-Union:
Over the past few months I have been hearing and reading many things regarding the Gay-Straight Alliance club at our high school. I am not involved in this club, however it deeply upsets me to hear that the majority of the things said or written are negative. I find it hard to believe that one article in the newspaper makes people think that our generation of youth is falling out of Christianity. If you believe this then you should become more involved in what is going on in our schools. WCHS has allowed Christian groups to meet before or after school for many years, so why is it wrong to let GSA meet at the school? In almost any other state if a religious group meets on school grounds then any other group that chooses to is also allowed to meet on school grounds. So why should it be different for our community? Maybe it is because we are a very religious community.

One that has not been open-minded enough to let in what the rest of the world has to show us. You can say we are children; but if you know about everything that goes on in our school then you would discover we are not children at all, we are young adults preparing ourselves for the path that lies ahead of us. If you want to fight for a cause, then fight for the world to be more open-minded about the changes that everyone will have to face. Fight for children who go home to abuse, or the thousands of people starving in other counties, or the people who are living on the streets in our own city. Get your priorities straight, stop living such a sheltered life and open your eyes to the fact that God loves everyone and that God is the only one who has the right to judge. I am happy to have been able to grow up in a family where treating people as equals and not judging them by how they act but getting to know the person inside is important. Being able to make up my own mind about important issues has helped me to become an open-minded adult. I can say that I am Christian student at WCHS who does believe that GSA has the right to meet and that they should be treated like any other nonsanctioned club. It's hard not to ignore this life style, it is in magazines, on television, and in our everyday lives whether you want to agree with it or not. I doubt a television show director is going to change the plot of their show because a Christian thinks homosexuality is wrong.

Hopefully as a community we will be able to teach the younger generations to accept what every person has to offer, no matter what their lifestyle is like, without judging them.
