Polling Places
Editor, Times-Union:All new voter registration cards are now issued with this printed on them for a location: "POLLING PLACE IS NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME."
Inside the folded card the instructions say for any questions, call the phone number printed on the front of the card.
There is no phone number listed on the card.
After missing the last election because of this "flumadiddle," I called the County Offices and was eventually forwarded to the County Clerk's Office.
As best I can understand it from my converstation today, this is done because there is a problem locating polling places and they are not permanent. I was told to: call - the number printed on my card! - just previous to voting or read the locations in the local newspapers or listen to the local radio stations for locations.
When I asked the phone number so I could write it on my card, I was told to call the number I had just called! I didn't give in. And, finally, I got a phone number.
So, whoever prints Kosciusco County Voter Registration Cards, Couldn't it be JUST AS EASY to write on the cards: "CALL (219) 372-2232 FOR POLLING LOCATION." That is not even as long as the one written now.
As I am writing this, I am wondering if this phone number even works because I surely did not call any 372 prefix to call the Kosciusko County Clerk's Office. If this county needs help to locate permanent polling locations, that is something that needs to be made public and WORKED on.

Positive Feedback
Editor, Times-Union:Thank you! How respectful and thoughtful! Have been noticing the little flag in the obituaries of our veterans. A lovely plus.
And - good job and hats off to our junior high bands and choirs for their concert this past Thursday night - really blesses and encourages this old Grandma's heart to see our youth are still taught and shown patriotism. Just know those types of programs take hours of planning and practice.

Double Play For MDA
Editor, Times-Union:An avid baseball fan, I relished every moment of the playoffs and World Series, and appreciated excellent sports coverage from the Times-Union. Yet, like so many South Bend residents, I'd have preferred watching a championship series involving the Chicago Cubs.
This said, my hat is off to the Yankees for three reasons. First, their post-season play was flawless. Second, 25 world championships make them the most successful franchise in the century. Third, they deserve kudos for adding value to a season of great defensive play. Their innovative "Double Play for MDA" program raised $99,000 to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association assist families affected by muscle-wasting diseases. Every time the Bronx Bombers turned a double play during the regular season, three corporate sponsors contributed $250 to advance MDA's lifesaving programs.
It's great to see professional baseball giving back. The Yankees double play effort, as well as the involvement of hundreds more top athletes including those on the Chicago Cubs, help MDA fund research seeking treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases worldwide. Their teaming up for "Jerry's Kids" helps MDA offer unparalleled medical services through 230 clinics nationwide. In Indiana, MDA maintains five clinics, including Elkhart Clinic L.L.C. serving families in our area.
If other baseball clubs can augment their commendable civic efforts with the "Double Play for MDA" program, more than a million Americans ravaged by 40 neuromuscular diseases will have more to cheer about.

Aviary Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:The people of Warsaw are blessed that we live in a city of wonderful, caring folks. Our thanks to the area businesses who helped make our bake sale at Miller's Merry Manor, to get an aviary for the residents, the success it was.
John Montgomery, Warsaw
Leaders
Editor, Times-Union:Remember how special you felt in preschool and elementary school when it was your turn to be "line leader?" The privilege you earned to be the first for the day wherever you went. The responsibility you gained to guide your friends down the correct hallway towards music, lunch or maybe even the playground. The challenge you met to make good decisions that affected others ... and the list goes on.
The theme of this year's American Education Week - "Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow" - reflects the fact that today's schools incorporate more into their curriculum than just the basics. Schools encourage students to discover their personal strengths as well as their vocational dreams. Building on these talents and skills, students can begin to see the importance of their part in the community.
"Line Leader" is just the beginning! Many opportunities are available for students: to lead a small group in a class project, to lead a club in a service project for the community, to lead a sports team to a winning season, to lead a band across the marching field, or just to lead by example. Not everyone can be a leader all the time, but our students are learning the skills necessary to share leadership roles with their peers in order to earn the privilege, responsibility and challenge of guiding our nation into the future.
Please remember this week those in education: teachers, administrators, librarians, bus drivers, counselors, club sponsors, coaches etc. ... who have helped you or your children to become the "Leaders of Tomorrow."
