Lost Without Athletics
Editor, Times-Union:I am a member of the Warsaw Community High School football team writing to make a statement about the letter, "The future is football." We'd be lost with a world without athletes. Athletics keep today's youths off the street and something to work hard at and thrive for. Mr. Richardson, it's not just about football. It's about how we come together as a team, all the summer workouts, the times in the weight room, keeping our grades up and being a leader on and off the field. Our football coach has taught us to be a son first, then a student and last, but not least, an athlete. A very large portion of our team was made up of scholar athletes. Several of our seniors scored over 1,000 on the SAT.
Spending more money on academics will not raise test scores. What the students put in is what they'll get out of their education. Students who are involved in extracurricular activities and athletics tend to achieve better grades than students who aren't involved. Every three-four weeks a grade check is run on our football team. I assure you poor grades aren't accepted or tolerated.
Our team is a family. When one of us gets hurt or something is wrong, we all come together and support each other. Six weeks into the season I was injured and had to be transported to KCH by ambulance. We had a big game to prepare for, but Coach Jensen dropped everything and rode over to the hospital with me. He stayed for a lengthy time and checked up on me periodically visiting me and calling. The next night, countless numbers of "brothers" came up and checked up on me. Even more came the following night.
At our last home game, part of the front bleachers collapsed. We are in need of a new facility. This team has brought the community out to support us on Friday night. We are packed. The numbers are getting bigger every year. A community the size of Warsaw deserves a nice facility. Quit complaining about your tax dollars and be proud to live in the country you do.
Nick Martin

Editor's Note: The bleachers did not collapse. A railing gave way when a large group of students pushed forward to mug for a TV camera.
Practice Constraint
Editor, Times-Union:Only 250 people attending a hearing where the school is wanting to spend 40-some million of their money for such things as a performing arts, 1,200-seat auditorium, stadium and a support area (only thing that needs support is to keep them from sitting on their heads more), and more weight and wrestling room. This totals almost $25 million in Warsaw alone. History is proving that larger schools are producing dumber and and less rounded pupils. Kids that cannot do a darn thing unless the work is done by computer or a calculator. All the schools want to do is find ways to spend money instead of finding ways NOT to spend money. This is not a legacy that I want to pass along to my children or grandchildren. I lived around Warsaw for most of my life and believe me, I got just as big a laugh as most other people when they built that albatross south of town. And now I am appalled that they are now trying to stick it to the taxpayers again. The school system there is still small enough that enough people can have some effect on the governing body. GET OUT AND ATTEND AND LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. I now live in Tucson and the school system here has carte blanche on spending and are building new schools every two years and the taxes are outrageous. If the school board cannot practice constraint, then how are our future leaders going to do to us?

Lovin' Our Boys
Editor, Times-Union:
Shame on you, Jerry! What an awesome season our football team had! I'm sorry that you missed out! If you had conversed with any of these young men, you would have seen their character and realized the futility of your words. You chose the wrong "pawn" in making your point, which was?
You were right about one thing. The future IS football, whether or not the school builds a new facility. I finally thought the football team was getting some long overdue recognition for their great accomplishments this year. Jerry, perhaps you need to get some help for the real issues in your life.
I, along with other parents of senior football players, would be delighted to share our sons' SAT scores with you. Academic fraud? Get real and investigate before you expose your ignorance. I'm proud that these boys choose to spend their time with coaches that promote the philosophy; son, student, athlete. I question that you were any of these.
Your "boys will be boys" comment was simply pathetic. Do your homework. The team has many members in Honor Society, academic teams, service and business clubs and church groups.
I hope that ever Tiger football fan, player, teacher and parent that you offended attends the school board meeting. I would rather support a football team of BIG BOYS, than a LITTLE MAN like you. Jerry, it is obvious that you have never crossed a goal line. You don't even know which way to look.
Lovin' our boys,

Accident Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:On Oct. 25, 2001, we nearly lost a loved one in our family from a car accident on Ind. 13 south of Pierceton. We want to publicly thank God for being with Larry Wright and our family during our lives.
The support Larry received for days was incredible. We thank the paramedics and police for what they did to help. You are appreciated very much by the Wright family. We want to thank the young man who knelt over Larry in prayer at the accident. You are a godsend and a true angel of the Lord. without you things would have been more tragic. We want to thank our very own church family and pastors for their prayers and their love they have given. We want to thank all the churches and friends who have prayed for Larry and our family. We also thank Kosciusko Community Hospital and Parkview Hospital for the wonderful care they have been giving. We praise God for what he has done in our lives in the past and what he plans to do with our lives in the future.
God Bless
The Larry Wright Family

Atwood Parking
Editor, Times-Union:Most everyone knows where "The Store" in Atwood was at, right? Well, it is now Body Enhancements Tattoo Studio, yeah, I know, BIG change.
Well, according to the county sheriff, that's not all that has changed. For all of you who for years have been parking out front and picking up your newspaper, you cannot do that anymore. The sheriff said that it is a No Parking Zone, along with most of the east side of the building on Harrison Street. (Even though neither place has signs posted). That many complaints have been called in, about not being able to see to pull out onto Old 30.
I was rather surprised since so many people for so long have been doing this. Not only that but the previous renter parked out front all day every day. Nonetheless, either this is something new, or new to be enforced. Either way, I just wanted all of you to know that if you stop at the Tattoo Studio to get a paper you will have to park on the west side of the building or take your chances with getting a parking ticket.

One Man's Thoughts
What will follow the WTC and anthrax? Have we learned nothing over the years? Vietnam's tunnels and Iraq's underground bunkers tuaght us we can't fight unconventional wars using conventional means. What makes us think we can conquer the caves? We must fight with the same means the enemy understands, no holds barred by rules of wars. Fight fire with fire because they use no rule book. The enemy struck first, targeting civilians. We have every moral right to do the same. We've used a "slap their hands" mentality much too long.
It's time we took lessons from Vlad The Impaler and Alexander The Great. If we played with their minds, retaliated with a ratio of 100 to 1, impaled their bodies, buried them with pork and "salted" the ground, they would give us Osama. If this would mean the beginning of the end ... so be it. It will all end anyway. Am I mad? Maybe, but it takes a madman to fight a madman. And while I'm at it, I'm tired of seeing active and reserve military on TV crying over the hardships of their activation. It's the nature of the job. They knew ahead of time, unlike the people that brought down the plane over Pennsylvania. They are the real heroes. Funny, I don't recall the general public being upset when I went to Vietnam the first or second time.

Did you read editor Gerard's News Views in Saturday's paper? If not, you should read it now.
The school board is being urged to build a new football stadium and adjacent structures at a cost of over $11 million, bringing the board's debt to over $41 million for the whole project, a figure which even larger communities can ill afford.
Agreeing with the editor is not enough. Tell him.

REMC Says Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:The Line Department of Kosciusko REMC would like to thank Conservation Officer Lyle Enyeart for the help he provided us during an outage on October 17th at Palestine Lake. Our lineman who responded to the outage call found that the primary line that crosses the lake had burned down. Officer Enyeart had his boat at the lake and helped us pull the new line to the other side of the lake. Without his help, the outage time would have been much longer. We greatly appreciate the help he provided us.

Education And Morality
Editor, Times-Union:This is in response to "The Future Is ... Football!" First I must say that I am a recent graduate of our local school systems, and I know how much emphasis is put on sports. If you've ever been to our schools and spent some time there, you will realize that if you are in sports you are held on a pedestal. Now, I must say that not all sports are held high. Football, basketball and baseball seem to be the "popular" sports. So, if you are going to increase backing for sports don't forget the little guys like swimming, tennis, track and volleyball, and any others that I forgot to mention. I understand that sports do increase our skills, but what about music, math, science, business, history and government; skills and knowledge that without which we would not be where we are today. Would you be happy if our president had just played football all his life, and decided, Hey I want to be a president, even though I didn't care about physics or literature or art? I certainly would not. I also cannot believe that someone would actually encourage teenage boys to haze, perform random acts of violence and commit sexual assault just so we can say "boys will be boys." I must say, where have our morals and values gone? I certainly will be praying that people will realize where our real future lies ... education and morality are the only things that will keep our nation alive.

If you spend $44-plus million for schools and ground, factories and businesses will go to Whitley County. Wake up. They have plenty of good ground for lease.
