Organ Donation

Editor, Times Union:
A woman who was expecting her second child was told by her physician after an emergency C-section that the expected infant could not survive. During the ensuing grief and disappointment, she happened to think of organ donation.

Two years later she met Jacob, a little boy who was living a normal life because he had her baby's heart. Her son's liver, eyes, kidneys and skin were transplanted in other infants' bodies who needed such. She writes how knowing this helped her cope with the loss of her son.

It is estimated that 80,000 Americans are waiting for organs. It is sad that in spite of increased knowledge and success in transplanting, as a nation we are lagging in committing our organs for others to use at our health.

Rape And Abortion

Editor, Times Union:
In response to Brandy Webb's recent Letter to the Editor, there are a number of statements she makes that I would take issue with. However, to shorten this letter, I will just respond to her statements about rape victims and abortion.

A book titled "Victims and Victors" takes from a survey of 200 women who have experienced rape or incest pregnancies The book reveals that most women who become pregnant through sexual assault do not want abortions. Here are just a few of the quotes from the book: "After my daughter was born, it was love at first sight - I know I made the right decision in having her." - Nancy "Cole"

"I think that rape victims with pregnancies are discriminated against because people seem to think you're nuts to have a baby by a man who raped you. We are looked upon as being liars, or stupid." - Sharon "Bailey"

"They say abortion is the easy way out, the best thing for everyone, but they are wrong. It has been over 15 years and I still suffer." - "Rebecca Morris"

"Abortion does not help or solve a problem - it only compounds and creates another trauma for the already grieving victim by taking away the one thing that can bring joy." - Helene Evans.

A feminist group, Feminists for Life, has stated that, "Some women have reported suffering from the trauma of abortion long after the rape trauma has faded."

I would ask Brandy, how can it be considered good therapy for a rape victim to add to her trauma the guilt of knowing that she took the life of the child growing inside her?

Consider a quote from Dr. David Reardon, an expert on post abortion syndrome. "Abortion is not some magical surgery which turns back time to make a woman 'un-pregnant.' Instead, it is a real life event which is always very stressful and often traumatic. Once we accept that abortion is itself an event with ramifications on a woman's life, then we must carefully look at the special circumstances of the pregnant rape victim. Will an abortion truly console her, or will it only cause further injury to her already bruised psyche?"

I realize that since abortion is legal, a rape victim can have an abortion. However, with the information available, it appears that rape victims who become pregnant want and need our support to see the pregnancy through, rather than being told automatically that abortion is the answer.

For those who would like more information about the rape/abortion issue, I suggest that you go to our Web site, www.kcrtl.org and click on the home page link titled "Rape, Incest and Abortion, Searching Beyond the Myths."

School Election

Editor, Times Union:
We are in Florida for the winter season and have been told there was a mistake made in a voting place where the candidates for the Warsaw School Board were inadvertently omitted, resulting in many people not being able to vote on this. A new election must be held in that voting place to correct this, but it seems the solution could be rather simple. Just have a ballot with only the school board candidates on it, and only those persons who voted on Nov. 2 be allowed to cast a ballot in the special election.

Abortion Issue

Editor, Times-Union:
I just picked up the paper today and would like to thank Lisa Rector. I had to go back and read Mr. Burtoft's letter and it is this simple. You're not a woman so you really have no say on the subject. Also if you think that we should let the government tell us what we can and can't do, maybe you would like it better in Iraq or anywhere they have a dictatorship. I'm not sure how old you are but I think you are a little behind in the times. This is 2004. Also I never said a baby wasn't a baby until it was born. I'm just simply saying that if a woman chooses to have one and there are health issues such as rape then she should be able to and not feel bad about it. I however don't think it should be used as birth control, but like Lisa said it is not black and white. There is a whole lot of gray. Also I'm not judging anyone I just said I would never have one is all. To be ever honest, what is wrong with the world today is everyone being in everyone else's business. One more thing off the subject of abortion. I'm so disappointed in Indiana for re-electing a guy who is so into himself and his beliefs. Our soldiers are over fighting and many of them are dying but yet our leader is so afraid of changed that he is trying his hardest to push for a gay marriage ban. What is all that about. There are so many things he needs to be focusing on. Important things. It just makes me sick that Indiana is so uptight and so afraid of things they don't understand. I think we made as a country the worst decision ever and in the next four years we are going to see just how big. Equal rights for all!
