Moving Forward
Editor, Times-Union:All of America has been sobered by the attacks on Sept. 11. We found it hard to believe that what we were watching on TV that day was taking place in our country. Scenes like that have been seen for years, but they were in other countries, not ours.
Our land that has known freedom from outside assault and invasion has now been violated by terrorists.
What do we do from this time forward? President Bush has informed us of plans to seek out, capture or destroy this violator. Most of us agree that we do have to take a stand against terrorism. We should and must defend ourselves. Some think we need more bodies enlisted in our armed forces. Some are consoled with the increased traffic control on the airplanes. Some have even said that we should close our doors to other nationalities in an attempt not to make it so easy to be assaulted from within our own boundaries. Maybe some of these ideas will help protect us in the future. Then again, maybe the next attacks will come in ways that none of us have thought of. I guess for myself the question is not how should we try to protect ourselves, but how many more disasters will have to come before we as a nation turn our attention toward the only one who can protect us.
God's word has always been the best source of advice and it is for our present situation as well. Second Chronicles 7:14 says, "If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from Heaven, forgive them of their sins and heal their land." We all agree that our country needs healed. We have been in decline for many years. Our standards, values and morals have decayed. We have crime, alcohol and drug abuse, divorce, mental and physical diseases as well as numerous other problems that have gone from bad to worse in the past 25 years. We spend millions of dollars each year to help turn around these problems with little or no success. God places sole responsibility upon Christians if our country is going to get the protection that we need. God says, "If my people ... " He doesn't say, "If the people of this nation will humble themselves and pray."
We as Christians are so quick to point out the sins of those outside of our circle, but what about ours? God is telling his people to turn to him and repent of their wicked ways. I ask you, what are our wicked ways? Could one be complacency, allowing our country to be taken over by spiritual darkness which has brought in all sorts of problems? Could another be pride, that of being satisfied that a minority of us as Americans have received God's free gift of eternal life by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, meanwhile the majority have not found that saving grace?
My prayer for all of us is that we will not forget what has happened in New York and Washington, but it will be a catalyst that will ignite a blazing fire within us to pray as we have never prayed before for the salvation of our great country.

Minors Buying Alcohol
Editor, Times-Union:My daughter was killed because a minor was allowed to purchase alcohol.
I need your help. I have been told nothing can be done to the liquor stores in Warsaw that sold the alcohol to him. This was not the first time he bought alcohol from them. At least one of the stores knew he was not of age. They broke the law and because of it three young people were killed. How many others have lost loved ones in Kosciusko because the law was broken? Maybe your loved one was killed or injured by some other underage young person or your loved one was that young person who purchased the alcohol and was killed, injured or in prison. We have to pay for the liquor store's neglect to obey the law. Now it's time for them to pay. The law told me if these people are caught, their licenses are taken away. If that is so, why are they still working?
The law must be changed. The penalty for selling alcohol to minors should be so hard they will think twice. Right now their attitude is "Oops, I guess we goofed again," and laugh at anyone who tries to sue them by saying that, according to their rules, they have the right to sell to any person as long as they don't look or act intoxicated. So what good is the law?
I am going to the legislature. I need everyone's help who feels the same. So often I hear, "We agree with you," or "You are so right." We need to put these words into action. I need petitions signed by all who care. Also letters of support, etc., need to be sent to: Pamela Hiers, 3708 S. CR 900W, Mentone, IN 46539, or phone 353-7315.
I also need anyone who knows all about going to the legislature to contact me.
Not just those who are victims can be involved; anyone who cares can help. Remember, your child could be next.
How many have to die before it stops?

Thanks To Firemen
Editor, Times-Union:Thank you WFD!
There are nine little kiddies that want to say thank you to the Warsaw Fire Department for coming to teach us about fire safety. We learned a lot! We have been practicing the "Stop, drop and roll" method that you taught us. Thank you for showing us around the "big fire truck." Wow! We are still talking about that. Thank you for going over and above the call of duty. You guys are great.
