Giving Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:Many Christians bow their heads and thank God for the food they are about to eat, whether at home or at a restaurant. It would be great if every Christian and Christian family did this in witnessing to their faith. Children of such Christian families share in saying "thank you" to God for food before meals.
A boy at another friend's house for a meal came home, saying to his family, "They never thanked God for the food, they began eating just like Max, our dog, does."
Surely, as we approach the one truly religious holiday, Thanksgiving, and sit at our tables, laden with more than sufficient wonderful food, which God has grown in field, fowl and animal for our blessing and consumption, let us thank Him. The good things of this life are gifts from God.
Thanksgiving is a recognition of a debt that cannot be paid. It is a recognition of dependence upon Creator God for life, sustenance, fulfillment, and eternal life beyond life now.
We sing in our churches: "All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, For all His love."

Justice System
Editor, Times-Union:Isn't there something wrong with this picture? Friday night I'm sitting here reading the paper. Page 3A under Public Occurrences - County Jail Bookings - lists that 1:46 a.m. a man was arrested for possession of narcotics/cocaine and possession of marijuana and bond was set at $2,000. Then I read down further under Court Briefs and saw that the same man was sentended on drug charges. Noting under the Court Briefs he was sentenced to one year in prison with credit for time served and good time credit, totaling 182 days, for the "first" charge, and four years in prison with credit for time served and good time credit, totaling 182 days, for the "second" charge. The "final" three years of the sentence for the second charge were suspended. The sentences will be served concurrently and on goes the fines and particulars.
In my opinion it is very obvious that there is something lacking in the court system. Now I would have thought after reading the Court Briefs that this guy got off pretty easy and would have surely learned his lesson. Now providing these two names are one in the same, he obviously learned nothing. I would think that probably the courts had better look more closely at the named person and really think things through before granting "suspended" sentences and making sentences serve "concurrently." The amount of the bond being set needs to make more of an impact in order to at least slow the person down from committing the same thing again and again. Sure the courts are bogged down. I feel that part is due to only smacking people on the wrist. Is there something wrong with making an impact on the concerned person? This "person" is making a bad impact on our community and our kids. When are people going to wake up? It doesn't matter which side of the bench you are on.

Positive Attitude
Editor, Times-Union:10/23/04 ... I had a dream in the wee hours this morning. There had been a wedding, and someone whispered aloud: "I wonder how long this one will last?"
I turned and whispered a little louder (on purpose): "One thing for sure; It will last longer and do better with the help of our positive attitude and theirs. I want to do all I can to help it last." Then came a thoughtful, prayerful silence - very appropriate for the occasion.
Soon I awakened to the sweet, quiet snoring of my wife nearby. The dream left me wondering about the power of a positive attitude toward the new governments of Iraq and Afghanistan. We all know that children who fail in school are influenced by the "failing attitudes" of parents and others who should - and could - be helping them with winning ways and positive attitudes.
Think back with me a few years: England, Germany and Japan have all been the "enemies" of the USA at some time in our past. Now they are all three among our best friends and allies.
"Time heals all ills" we have heard. How far from the truth! Look at the sons of Abraham, after thousands of years! Not only do they hate each other, but they effectively spread their destructive hatred to almost every nation on God's good Earth! (When will we ever learn?)
The law of sowing and reaping each of us have tested, have we not? We have also discovered that we cannot break that law. But we can, and do, break ourselves ON that law! And that breaking is our doing, not God's!
I believe God's plan for our world is freedom and life! If we use our freedom as the Creator intended, it brings life, with a big plus - for ourselves and others. What a moment in history for us to voluntarily choose to accept the "Golden Rule" on a grand scale! (See St. Matthew, chs.5, 6, & 7.)

Christmas Child
Editor, Times-Union:I attend Warsaw Baptist Church and we would like to invite the public to join us in Operation Christmas Child.
Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Franklin Graham's and Samaritans Purse. Shoe boxes are filled with gifts, school supplies, hygiene items and other small items. It is wrapped and sent to children around the world who would not otherwise have a Christmas.
Brochures with gift lists and tags will be available at the church. Otherwise this is how it works:
Find an empty shoe box. You can wrap it if you like, but wrap the lid separate. Decide whether your gift is for a boy or girl and choose an age category: (2-4), (5-9) or (10-12). Attach the appropriate label (boy or girl). Fill your shoe box with a variety of items:
n Toys: small cars, balls, doll, stuffed animal, yo yo, kazoo, harmonica, toys that light up or make noise, etc.
n School supplies: pens, pencils and sharpener, paper, crayons, coloring books, etc.
n Hygiene items: toothbrush, comb, toothpaste, soap, wash cloth, etc.
n Other: hard candy, gum, sunglasses, hats, gloves, T-shirt, flashlight and batteries are a big item, hair clips, watches, diaries, nonperishable items only, etc.
n Shipping: requires $5 put inside the shoe box for later, when it arrives at Samaritans Purse for transport by plane.
Drop it by the church on or before noon on Nov. 21. On the 21st, the shoe boxes will be taken to an area drop site where they will be forwarded to Samaritans Purse and prepared for Operation Christmas Child. From there they will be delivered by plane to children all over the world. For information and labels please contact Warsaw Baptist Church 269-5246. Or read about Samaritans Purse on their Web site.
