Tax Give-Away

Editor, Times-Union:
Open letter to Senator Lugar.

Topic: The $300 and $600 give-away

What the politicians did only shows us that the wealthy and big business got most of the money -Ê60 percent of the total give-away. The middle class got the 40 percent.

This is like putting a single penny in a 55 gallon barrel and expecting this penny to help our economy.

On the other hand, if 100 percent of this "give-away money" were given mostly to the lower income families, including we seniors in retirement who receive less than $15,000 a year, all of the monies, yes the whole 100 percent, would be spent on things that are needed in our daily lives, things that are needed most.

This indeed woudl boost our national economy to a high normal state.

Accident Victim Recovering

Editor, Times-Union:
On this past Labor Day, my daughter Kendra was a passenger in the back seat of a vehicle that ran a stop sign at the intersection of 300S and County Farm Road. The two young men in the front of the car were killed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to their families. Kendra, along with her friend Nicole Caudill and the Howards, who were in the other vehicle, were all injured. My family is deeply grateful to the emergency personnel who were on the scene, as well as KCH and Good Samaritan staff who ensured that they were in the best of care being transported to Parkview in Fort Wayne. For a little over two weeks, we spent some time in the "valley of the shadow of death" as Kendra fought for her life due to severe head trauma. One day when I walked into her ICU room to wash my hands, I felt a set of eyes on me only to turn and see my daughter waving and smiling at me! She is truly a miracle due to the professional work of the Parkview employees and the literally hundreds of people who prayed, sent cards and gifts, phoned and sat with us as we shed tears and listened to the pain of our hearts. I have read and repeated the 23rd Psalm many times in my life, but personally experienced that "I will fear no evil, for You are with me." On Oct. 19, Kendra came back to Warsaw and has since spent time with Nicole and the Howards, who are still recovering from their injuries. She has some hurdles to overcome, but the medical professionals join us in marveling at her recovery. We send our thanks to everyone who has supported me and my family. Most importantly, I give praise to Jesus Christ for being there in the darkness and the wonder of having my daughter home once more.

Organ Donations

Editor, Times-Union:
Residents of New York State who wish to donate organs, eyes or tissue at their death, can enroll in a statewide computer registry. Through a cooperative effort between the New York State Health Department and the Department of Motor Vehicles, an individual can record his desire to donate organs, eyes and tissue.

Previously, permission from next of kin was required before donation could occur. In many cases, family members were reluctant to give consent and badly needed donations were lost.

A single donor can save or improve the lives of many people. It is estimated that there are presently nearly 70,000 people nationwide waiting for an organ transplant. Thousands of others are waiting for eye, tissue and bone donations.

Why doesn't Indiana, through its Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Health, provide such a registry for Indiana residents?

Firemen

Editor, Times-Union:
Do firemen sleep in their fireclothes? Sunday morning at 4 a.m., my burglar alarm goes off. What's going on? Where are they coming in? Afraid to open my bedroom door, I opened it anyway and found an ashtray had been smoldering and would have caught fire, destroyed my house, taken possibly my life and those of my wonderful, fuzzy children. I turned off the alarm, put out the ashtray and started to go back to bed. Phone rings, it's the alarm company, explained the situation, gave the password and before I even hung up the phone, there was a fully dressed fireman at my front door. I told him what happened and that we were all right. Mind you, there's no way five whole minutes had passed from the time my alarm went off until the time the fireman was at my door, sirens, flashing lights, fully dressed. Five minutes - I live in the country, I was totally impressed.

So this letter is for our firemen. Especially that one. I'm not sure I said thank you, but God bless you. My alarm paid for itself last night. It made me feel more secure than I ever have felt. I know my security system made me feel comfortable, but ADT and our fire department made me feel safe. I do not have words to explain the feeling of internal peace the two of you have given me.

To anyone ever considering a home security system, there are many facets to security. Consider an alarm system for yourself. It gives you peace of mind and heart in so many ways.

Mr. Fireman, who came out on Scott Road at 4 a.m., bless you, thank you and may you never be awakened at such an obscene time again.
