Church And State
Editor, Times-Union:The ACLU is trying to make the United States a nation free from religion.
Here in Indiana, the ICLU wants prayers that invoke the name of Jesus Christ to be banned. Two professing Roman Catholics, a Quaker and a former Methodist preacher join hand in hand with the ACLU claiming to be offended at hearing the name of Jesus Christ in government situations. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that we as citizens of the United States have a right to not be offended. This frivolous case states that praying in the name of Jesus Christ is offensive to some and creates the situation of Indiana establishing a state religion.
Is the State of Indiana forcing the plaintiffs to pray to Jesus Christ or be burned at the stake? Is the government telling the plaintiffs either believe in Jesus Christ or all of your assets will be confiscated and you will be thrown in jail? Is someone threatening to deport them to another state for not acknowledging the deity of Jesus Christ? So where is the offense, the foul, the hurt, the bloodshed? Where is the tolerance?
The ICLU is "worried" that by praying to or in the name of Jesus Christ, it might offend someone who rejects Christ as God. If there is a prayer, it has to be a generic prayer to a nameless, anemic, what might be, but not necessarily, deistic entity. What about offending the gods? What god (if there were other gods) would want a mealy, milky-toast prayer with no direction or heart? My God would be disgusted with them and want to spew them out. You are either hot or cold for God. There is no middle ground in God's eyes. Where is the foundation upon which to stand for a mediocre god that is not worthy of mentioning His name? My God created the Universe in six days and rested on the seventh. My God speaks things into being and gives it life. My God rescues the perishing. My God cared enough for me to make the ultimate sacrifice so that I might see life. Every knee shall bow to the God of the Bible whether they believe in Him or not. That is a God worth mentioning by name.
The Bible states for its followers to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. The ACLU is forcing the State of Indiana into establishing an atheist religion called Freedom From Religion in which makes it illegal for the Christian to practice his beliefs freely. The ACLU seeks to make it impossible for the Christian to worship as directed by God. Is the State to dictate how we practice our religion?
If you do not stand up for God, why should God at judgment time stand up for you? Call your Senators and Representatives and tell them to support Speaker Brian Bosma in his fight against freedom from religion.

Editor, Times-Union:I wonder how many people realize that in the new energy bill President Bush signed, there is a provision to extend Daylight Saving Time an extra month in 2007, this should ensure that Indiana kids will have another month at risk of going to school in the middle of the night. Maybe Mitch can take his RV around to the schools to explain to the kids why they need to go to bed in the daylight to get enough sleep to get up in the middle of the night.
Why do the politicians, at the state and federal level, have this compulsive need to tell us what time it is?
Last spring I thought they had put "Pee Wee's Playhouse" back on television. This group of clowns had Mr. Clock in the front of the room, and they were taking turns turning the hands back and forth, and acting stupid. In reality, it was the Indiana legislature. It wasn't even the real Pee Wee, it was a look-a-like named Mitch Daniels.
Why do people in Indiana have to choose between Central DST and Eastern DST, when most of Indiana has no right to express their opinion,to just be left alone.

Editor, Times-Union:Thank you, thank you.
You have been so good to me.
I have enjoyed every paper, especially the columns, (and most especially Patrick Kavanaugh's) and learned much from them. Thanks especially for the whole month of free papers and for giving me every Thursday's paper since then. Is there anything I can do for you in return? I have been here since the end of May and still don't have a job, and have only $7.28 left in the bank, but there is a possibility now that I will get a babysitting opportunity. If so, I suppose I might be able to subscribe again after a period of catching up and paying debts.
I have a wealth of observations on northern Indiana, if you would care to hear a Connecticut yankee's perspective.
