Editor, Times-Union:This is an open letter to residents of Wayne Township in support of Dan Slone, Republican candidate for Wayne Township Trustee. Dan has shown a strong desire to succeed; he is working hard and is worthy of your support.
November 5, just a few short days away, should be marked on every calendar as one of importance! That is Election Day when citizens have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote on the future of our local community, state and nation.
With government being so much a part of our lives today, one's opportunity to have input and give direction to those we put into office by exercising our right to vote is crucial to the lives of not only ourselves, but those of our children, grandchildren and the generations that follow.
We, the signers of this open letter to our constituents, know there is an attitude among our population who say that it doesn't do any good to vote, which most likely helps account for the lower voter turnout we are experiencing in recent elections. However, we can say to you directly that one person, one vote, can make a difference. A prime personal example is that of former governor Doc Bowen, when he was elected Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives. He won that seat by one vote!
We urge all eligible voters to go to the polls on Nov. 5, and cast a vote for the candidate of your choice.

Editor, Times-Union:I know there is a strong tendency for people to vote for the home town boy, but those of us interested in defending the Second Amendment must resist that this year.
Representative Souder has been a very good friend of ours and we just can't afford to lose him. The anti-gunners have been trying to convince the voters that the gun issue is dead and we need not worry about it in the future. That's a lie and they know it. All they're doing is keeping a low profile until they regain Congress and the White House and then the whole thing will start all over again.
Mr. Souder gets straight As on Second Amendment issues and Mr. Rigdon didn't even see fit to return his questionnaire. Obviously he is either anti-gun or isn't interested in the issue at all. Either way we don't need him representing us.
Be sure to vote and let's keep Representative Souder working for us.

School Board Election
Editor, Times-Union:Greetings Warsaw School System residents! It's School Board election time and quite frankly cannot be a better time to go "out with the old and in with the new." Southern Kosciusko residents have seats up for election and we need to seriously look at why there needs to be a change. First of all, there is the all too familiar battle to keep Silver Lake School open. Here are some very sound reasons to do that. One, no need for taxes to inflate immensely when the town is opposed to it anyway. Second, and something I am not sure Claypool residents are aware of, there will be no busing of kindergartners an hour a day to and from school. I say Claypool because the new school would not be in Claypool. No that's what I said, it would not be in Claypool. It would be in-between Silver Lake and Claypool. On land of course the school system has yet to buy, and develop. Something else Warsaw residents may not know is that Silver Lake NEVER even wanted a new building. Nope. We were of course allotted monies in the budget about 20 years ago that had to be appropriated for underestimated other costs in the system. But that's OK. Silver Lake didn't ask for a new building then, either. Hmmm, go figure.
Back to the election. Gene England, or Mr. England as I will forever call him, is running for one of those seats. Why would he make an excellent choice? Simple. He was the principal and teacher for both schools at one time or another. Still lives in Silver Lake and attends all functions he can. He is also serving on the Save Our School committee for Silver Lake. OK, so he is from Silver Lake and a former educator, what else qualifies him? How about his unwavering demand for good citizenship he expects from not just current students but for former ones as well. This man is a dedicated leader, wonderful educator and sorely missed in that capacity in the Silver Lake halls. Mr. England made it clear, crystal clear, that you not only represented Silver Lake School wherever you went, or competed, but you also represented the town, your parents and yourselves. "Booing" an opponent was never tolerated, and heaven help you if he heard you participated in such an event. He feels that good citizenship, small town values, fighting for what you believe in and ALWAYS putting academics before athletics was a must. Something I think the current board has either not been concerned about or looked the other way. This is evidenced by the enormous sports facility going to be built at the high school. I was in no way approached by anyone to voice my support for Mr. England. Simply put, I, as well a great deal of my family, was educated by him. And that education will live in my daily life for years to come. Just some of the lessons I learned from him, respect, integrity and caring for your neighbor; are just some of the lessons that the Warsaw School Board could use a dose of. To show just what I mean, at a school board meeting discussing the closing of Silver Lake school, the comment was made by a parent that closing the school would devastate the community. The School Board's response: It is not OUR responsibility to worry about the community. Really makes you think where the current school board members' priorities are! So on election day, vote your conscience, and your tax dollar. Vote Mr. Gene England!

Editor, Times-Union:On Nov. 5 you will be voting for one of two candidates for the office of Wayne Township Trustee. As the current trustee, I believe it is my obligation to inform the taxpayers of Wayne Township of the importance of electing the right candidate for this office. Our focus should be on the candidate's qualifications, not political affiliation.
This is a position of fiscal responsibility and high integrity that requires experience and knowledge in many areas. Accounting experience is necessary in preparing the annual budget, monthly reports and budget contracts (for the EMS, Fire Department and Parks Department). Guidelines stated by Indiana Township Association and instructions from Indiana State Board of Accounts must be completely understood in order to ensure that poor relief assistance is made available for those who truly qualify and taxpayer dollars are disbursed in an ethical and legal manner.
These are a few of the many duties that are required of the Wayne Township Trustee. Pam Cartwright, Democratic candidate for Wayne Township Trustee, is experienced and well qualified to perform these duties. Pam Cartwright will be a trustee that taxpayers will find deserves more than our votes; her competency and professionalism will earn our trust and confidence. She is honest, fair, experienced and will do the job right.
In closing, I ask you as taxpayers to consider the substantial responsibilities of a trustee. If you are in doubt as to which candidate to vote for, contact both candidates and talk to them. Make sure the candidate that you vote for is the business professional that you want your tax dollars entrusted with.

Editor, Times-Union:A vote for a Democrat is a vote for communism. We live in a representative republic according to our constitution. Why does this party even exist!?
Every program created and promoted by that party has been of a social nature since Roosevelt's "New Deal." Not to mention Hillary Clinton's socialized medicine proposition.Their main goal is to empower the government at the expense of our personal freedoms. "Everything free for everybody" sounds good, but who will pay for it? The Soviet Union proved to the world that system cannot work.
Look at your pay stubs. How much is taken from you for taxes? Your state and federal taxes are refundable. How much of your social security tax (FICA) can you get back as a refund? Ask your tax preparer.
The more money you have to pay in taxes to the government, the less you have to personally spend to help the economy.
The Democratic social programs are killing the economy in favor of a bigger, more intrusive government.
Loyal citizens, you cannot have it both ways!
This November 5 you decide! Do you want a better economy or a socialistic communist government?

Editor, Times-Union:Although I had my reservations about entering into public life, I felt that the only way to make a real difference was to become involved. I am confident of being able to do the job and do it well, however I do find the election process somewhat daunting and distasteful. This is why I have accepted no campaign contributions. I don't want people to base their vote on whom they like or dislike, but for the person they think is the most qualified for the job.
I am confident in my abilities, based upon my prior experience in the business world, to fulfill the required daily budgetary tasks involved. I would also like to think that I can bring another dimension to the office in the area of poor relief. I feel that I would be most qualified as I have a good balance of compassion and common sense.
One can argue that partisan politics doesn't play a role in an office of this magnitude, but they do have an influence. I would not allow partisan politics to stand in the way of good decision making.
I would like to remind people that they do have a choice Nov. 5 and to vote for the right person for the right reason.
