Editor, Times-Union:
We put up unneeded stop signs because it will make it safer for our little children. On the other hand, we build a restaurant and restore a hotel that will sell liquor, making it unsafe for our little children (unless we vacate all of the streets in town so no one can drive).

People are saying that it is OK to sell liquor because other things are being done now that were not allowed years ago (purchasing and use of cigarettes, swimming on Sundays, and cursing and swearing). That is real good reasoning, people! Is that how we bring our children up - they are going to do wrong anyhow, so why not allow it now? Let's not let one wrong be done because other wrongs are being done.

I think Mr. Wilcoxson even agrees on that. I would like to quote Mr. Wilcoxson from an article in the Sept. 22, 1997, issue of The Indianapolis Star/News. Mr. Wilcoxson says, "But when you have something really great from the past, something God has helped to create, if you don't preserve it, if you don't take care of it - well, it may not quite be blasphemy, but it's an offense of sorts. The good things deserve to be preserved, because they are gifts."

Is it not a good thing that the town of Winona Lake is a dry town? If so, then it deserves to be preserved. Whether it is Mr. Wilcoxson, Mr. Miller, the restaurant manager or the hotel manager who will apply for these liquor licenses, I ask them to think twice about it and preserve a good thing.

Years from now, let's be able to look back and say that the town of Winona Lake (not the town of Wino, or Liquor Lake as I have heard it recently called) stood up for something good and preserved it!

Editor, Times-Union:
Dumb and dumber,
That's our politicians of the '90s. There is just one of many examples of proof.

Bristol-Meyers Squibb (not Zimmer) decides to take 250+ jobs from Warsaw and move them to Puerto Rico. In exchange our politicians will give BMS tax breaks for each Puerto Rican they hire. All the severance monies that BMS pays to the Americans who now have no jobs, the politicians will let them use as a tax write-off.

So now let's see: Tax break for going to Puerto Rico. Tax write-off for severance pay for the Americans. Lower wages to pay for production in Puerto Rico. Retail parts back to Americans for top dollar price. All this for BMS.

Now what's in it for America: We get to lose good-paying jobs that produce good tax monies for our country. We get to watch BMS not pay taxes for hiring Puerto Ricans to take our jobs. We get to pay top dollar for parts made in Puerto Rico and shipped back for sale in the United States. Oh! By the way, Puerto Ricans don't pay any federal taxes on their wages, so if we get another job we can pay more taxes. We get to look our children and grandchildren in the eye and tell them we have a national debt that they will have to pay at 50 to 70 percent of their wages. That is if they can find a job. By then this country will be a two class system, rich and poor.

What's wrong with this picture? Our politicians are not only dumb, they just keep on getting dumber.

Illegal Dumping
Editor, Times-Union:
This time of year brings out some of the most beautiful colors, that at times we just take for granted like many other things in our every day to day activities. While living in Warsaw for the last 24 years, growing up in Larwill, moving to South Whitley and at different times making the trip down and through the old stomping grounds that as a teenager was probably well traveled.

This past Sunday morning, while it may not have been one of the nicest, was good because I was in no hurry, and was able to look around and what I saw has probably been there but I never noticed, or didn't want to see. What I'm talking about is down those county roads that are not traveled much, those roadside swamps or creeks, those railroad sidings, or any other place that someone could think to dump. Old appliances big or small, and all kinds of trash.

Come on, people, if you are going to buy things, use them, wear them out, break them and is no good to you or anybody else. Recycle if possible and if not, only then you should dispose of your trash. Not on anybody else's property, public or private, only in a well maintained landfill, which by the way our county does have.

After many times of saying I think I'll write a letter to the paper, but never did. And if and after you would read this say, "I hope he never writes again!" Just hop in your car or truck and go down some county roads or just take time and look around, and you might take time to type a letter and at least hope people would be more responsible with their trash. As you can tell, this is the first letter I ever wrote, besides one or two I might have written to my girlfriend, now my wife. And both felt good when I was done.
