The Word From Florida

Editor, Times-Union:
I just spoke with a former neighbor in Lake Placid, Florida. We lived there year-round for around 20 years until about a year ago when we returned to Hoosierland due to my husband's health.

Our long distance bill is unbelievable due to checking on friends and relatives in the Highlands County area. Pearl, who I just spoke with, says it is almost like a sea of blue plasticÊ-ÊLake Placid, that is. However, she stated Sebring got the worst brunt of the latest hurricane. But she was doing some cleaning even while some workmen were working in her home and she is one of the unlucky ones with a blue plastic roof. But at least their house is still standing and she and her husband are thankful for that. Many of the plastic roofs are due to trees falling on houses, but many, like Pearl's were just lifted off by the hurricane. The entire state of Florida is in dire straits, both coasts and the interior.

Our country I am told is becoming a two-class country but I think there is still a middle class and many of those go to the interior counties of Polk and Highlands counties for the winter and since I consider myself to be of middle class I am speaking to them. Before you head out for Florida this fall, be sure to call to be sure your residence is still there and in good condition.

Pearl stated the mobile home additions are asking that people refrain from driving through their parks due to the debris clearing yet to be removed. She said the county has opened a "dump" that had been closed so the working people will have someplace to put the debris. She told me many of the mobile homes were completely demolished, especially the older ones but many of the newer ones just lost their carports and some roof damage but it breaks our hearts to hear how hard they were hit. We still take the Lake Placid Journal and the last hurricane damaged their building to the point that they must go elsewhere to print their papers once the pages are all ready.

The very worst part, Pearl says, is the waiting. She says you see roofing company trucks passing by the dozens and plywood, etc., but so much damage is making it a long process and all the residents can do is just get their insurance man contacted and then sit and wait their turn for repair. She did tell me that many people from the northern states were down there helping with the clearing and of course the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Nu Hope are passing out clothing, food, water, ice and trying to keep up with the necessities. Some now have electricity but many still do not.

The politicians are passing out absentee ballots since those residents have one thing on their mind -Êtheir home and many do not even know if their voting precinct is still around.

Kerry On Abortion

Editor, Times-Union:
Linda Esah's letter on Kerry winning the debate on abortion was sickening. No one wins when a child is violently ripped apart into pieces so as to make their life more convenient.

John Kerry justifies abortion by proclaiming "Abortion is OK if a person is raped or impregnated due to incest." Our society does not kill the rapist for his atrocity, yet we allow the innocent child to be killed merely for being.

John Kerry and Esah are upset about an incest victim having to expose their sick perverted parent for committing this hideous crime. Rather than expose this loathsome sin and start the healing process, Kerry and Esah would rather add insult to injury and create an even more garish nightmare for the victims. Let's kill the child and eliminate the evidence of the crime. How convenient for the person committing incest. No child, no DNA testing to prove guilt. This policy is love the criminal and hate the innocent. If we do not "out" the criminal, the crimes will only continue.

John Kerry supports partial birth abortion hiding behind the facade of "safety for the woman." There is not one shred or documented evidence that there is ever a need for this horrid procedure. Abortion clinics and abortionists refused to supply the support court documented cases of such instances. Imagine being in a car wreck and the only way to save the mother would be to cut through the child trapped in the seat next to her.

There are thousands of families desperately waiting to adopt a newborn whether it be from a rape victim, incest or otherwise. No one wins in an abortion. The mother lives with the horrible mental anguish of killing her child for the rest of her life, would be adoptive parents wait another anxious lonely day of being childless and of course the life of a child is snuffed out and tossed into the trash.

Everyone wins in adoption. The mother has peace knowing her child is in a loving family, the adoptive parents can fulfill their dreams of having a family and the child knows the loving touch of a warm hand rather than a cold knife. Every 33 seconds an infant in the United States is ripped apart in the womb. Over 1 million a year since 1963. Four innocent babies have been killed in the time it took you to read this letter. Please put a stop to this insanity.

Experience With Edwards

Editor, Times-Union:
Please allow me to share my personal experience with Democratic vice-presidential candidate, Senator John Edwards.

While living in the D.C. area in the spring of 2003, I was eating at a local restaurant. Unbeknownst to me, Senator John Edwards was sitting in the booth directly behind me, along with his two toddler age children - a boy and a girl - and two other people.

From the beginning the children were loud and climbing all over the booth. I recall these two children being told several times to sit down and be quiet. (They were climbing the back of the booth where they were sitting, which, therefore, was the back of my booth - to the point that when I looked up they were looking down at me!) Again and again, they were told to calm down, but to no avail. There was no follow through on the discipline. The children only continued in their loud and disobedient ways. There was no meaning behind the words of discipline. Is this the type of man we want in leadership over our country - a man who would not say no to his toddler age children? (I am coming from the belief here that the personal life of any person does reflect how they will live and act anywhere else.) These children were being disobedient - just as during the Clinton Administration, Saddam Hussein was disobedient in regards to allowing the U.N. weapons inspectors into Iraq. What was the action that former President Clinton took? He kept giving Saddam's regime chance after chance after chance to comply with the U.N. There is a very certain similarity here between the actions of John Edwards and former President Clinton. From all appearances, it seems that both John Edwards (with his children) and President Clinton (with Saddam) were fearful of saying "no," seemingly because neither one of them wanted to look like the bad guy. Who was controlling whom here? The children were controlling their father and Saddam was controlling President Clinton - which, I believe, eventually led to a terrible ramification for our country. Is this the kind of leadership America wants again for another four years?

President George W. Bush has not always looked like the good guy nor has he always been the most popular, but he has stood firm on principle and raised the banner of virtue and truth high. What, after all, is more important - trying to be popular with everyone or doing the right thing even if it hurts? These are the things that each of us need to consider when placing our vote on Tuesday. Thank you for doing so. You will be glad you did.
