Child Support
Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is for the ladies who are paid to go after the parents who don't pay child support. My friend came to you and told you that she still had not received any money from her daughter's "deadbeat" dad. And what did you ladies do? You treated her like she's the bad guy for bothering you. Let me tell you something. I strongly respect her for taking responsibility for her actions. You have no right to make her or any other single parent feel guilty for coming to you to get the other parent to pay child support. These single parents are the taxpayers who help pay you. And I'm pretty sure that blaming or degrading the parent with custody is not in your job description! I think that you owe my friend, and all the other parents with custody that you treated like dirt, a huge apology.

Atwood Phone Service

Editor, Times-Union:
I live in Atwood and I am tired of long distances charges for Warsaw phone calls. I also have a computer and I have KC Online for the Internet. We have been waiting for six months for the petition with GTE and Sprint to come through, but it will probably be at least another six months before it happens, or if it happens.

I have been contacting KC Online every few months to find out when they will be getting a local POP for our area and I had been told they were working with GTE and having problems. I now find out it's not GTE, it is the cost of having it installed in our area. KC Online needs at least 25 people who are willing to pay for their service for one year in advance ($17.95 per month) and they will be able to accommodate us with a local number, which I am told will take 45-60 days to set up.

If anyone is interested in doing this, please contact me, John Webster at 267-1480, or e-mail him at [email protected] so we may get this service that we computer users need.

Winona Alcohol

Editor, Times-Union:
Ref: Avallone letter to Times-Union on Oct. 24.

I have watched with interest this so-called controversy over the proposed hotel renovation in Winona Lake.

I think the Avallone letter was an excellent overall view of "historical" precedent. That was 1942 - and now we all live differently, worship differently, sing different songs, use different instruments in the worship service, have developed different mores as we approach the 21st century.

It is apparent that the term "Christian" applies to many different forms of worship and different belief interpretations. Christian. Ecumenical? Fundamental? Contempory? Is it the Communion service or The Eucharist? Heavens, some Christian congregations even use real wine in the Communion service! And we Presbyterians (I think we are Christians) even say "debts and debtors" instead of "trespass and trespassers!"

It really is a personal thing. I know we enjoy a glass of wine with dinner - a little Ameretto in the after-dinner coffee - and many of our Christian friends also expect that when they dine out.

If this is going to be an exceptional dining room with superb service and excellent cuisine, the average diner expects to be able to order a pre- or post-dinner drink. If that is not available, then one must go someplace else to enjoy a pleasant lunch or evening out!

Hawaii Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
Words can't express enough on how thankful I am that I have people and friends that care enough to make my dream come true. A million thanks to each and every one of you. My husband and I really appreciated all of the help that you have done and given us. Also to all of the people who organized the fund-raisers of donated money for me to go to Hawaii.

My trip will always be remembered. Bless each and every one of you.

Shelter Benefit

Editor, Times-Union:
On Oct. 18, the first annual Shelter Shuffle was held at the 4-H Fairgrounds. This walk was organized to benefit the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter, which takes in approximately 3,000 homeless animals each year. It offered a chance for animal lovers of all ages to express their support and concern for the animals at the Shelter, and have some fun showing off their own pets at the same time.

Our goals were to raise funds to aid the Shelter while providing a means to educate the community about the struggles the facility faces. In addition, we hoped to stress the importance of responsible pet ownership in regard to spaying and neutering, proper vaccinations, long-term commitment, etc. This community fund-raiser was definitely a first step toward those goals.

I would like to express to everyone involved my gratitude for helping to make the event such a success. It was just wonderful to see so many friends of the Shelter who are not only so committed to their own animals, but also to those who aren't lucky enough to find best friends like you. Thank you!

Emergency Efficiency

Editor, Times-Union:
I happened to be the first person on the scene of a severe two-car collision on Old Road 30E by the Kosciusko County Highway Department last Thursday, Oct. 23. The local residents had called 911 immediately. One of the drivers had gotten out of his car so I checked on the other driver, who was closer anyway. In less time than an average string of T.V. commercials, there arrived trained volunteers, county and state police, EMS, and the fire department. Traffic was rerouted, statements taken, photographs taken, fire risks in the automobiles checked, and most of all the injured were well in hand. These people make a NASCAR pit crew look slow and clumsy. For me this was a real experience, but I know that these people operate this way routinely every day. My hats off to them. I don't think that they can ever be as proud of themselves as I am after watching the coordination and efficiency that was demonstrated in front of me.

Zimmer Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
To the Zimmer distributors;

We just wanted to let you know that your recent full-page letter in the Times-Union to the Zimmer employees that have been affected by the loss of jobs was much appreciated by us.

We all have been sadly affected by this action of corporate greed. Our reward for a job well done is being fired and having our jobs sent to the foreigners for the cheap labor.

We all know that it is only a matter of time before BMS takes all our jobs away. Thanks, Zimmer distributors, for your words of concern and sympathy.
