Get The Facts
Editor, Times-Union:Let me see if I got this straight. In our editor's weekly opinion column he acknowledges the reality of misstatements by both presidential candidates. Then the article launches into a long litany of lies by the John Kerry camp. Fair enough. But then the rest of the story never materializes. Is one then to extrapolate that the Bush camp serves up the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? That is patently erroneous as the opening paragraph states. Anyone interested in both sides of the coin might want to log on to factcheck.com, a Web site which has a link to the apolitical Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. This site is not to be confused with fastcheck.com, which is a spin center.
I find the politically correct allegation by both candidates that we will never have a draft to be a sweeping assessment. If the quagmire in Iraq does not get resolved or at the very least abated and it is hard to visualize us leaving there in the near future, a reality-based reasoning person has to entertain the possibility of a draft, distasteful as it may be. Recruitment is down, we continue to lose personnel almost daily, troops are being retained beyond their stated tour of duty. In other times mercenaries were available. In the 21st century only the Mideast religious fanatics fit the bill and they are the enemy. In my view we have not had a visionary foreign policy since Richard Nixon.
It has been suggested that with 20 years of senatoring Kerry should have been able to influence foreign policy. Take a look at how successful Richard Lugar, chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, has been with the Bush encampment. At the onset he said this is not how to deal with the Mideast situation but he was ignored. In my view, Mr. Lugar should have been elected president several years ago, but never equate mental and visionary acuity with charisma or lack thereof, which in the political arena is the kiss of death.
Meanwhile back to veracity - as Mark Twain so succinctly put it, "Truth is a precious commodity and should be used sparingly."

The company is a domain name administrator, Web site developer and Internet traffic syndicator. The domain name factcheck.com was registered by Name Administration to provide a directory of commercial providers of information resources relevant to the generic term "fact check." When Vice President Dick Cheney inadvertently directed viewers of the vice presidential debate to factcheck.com, the site redirected the resulting massive amount of traffic to an anti-Bush Web site operated by George Soros - georgesoros.com. I am speculating that is the "spin center" to which the letter writer refers. The Web site fastcheck.com is operated by a company billing itself as "the top business check resource on the net," helping its customers "find the best business check, computer check and electronic check resources." The Web site factcheck.org is operated by the Annenberg Public Policy Center.

Editor, Times-Union:To the people who live in the school board districts three and four. I wanted to remind all of you to get out and vote for new school board members.
We should not re-elect Jim Folk in district three or elect Chuck Sauders in district four for the following reasons: Jim Folk, as a school board member has NOT listened to his constituents. I want to remind people this is the same man in his deposition that said he does whatever McGuire and Thorpe told him to do. He is just a yes man without any thinking for himself. He said in his deposition that he doesn't look at anything and if McGuire tells him he should vote a certain way he does. We do not need a yes man.
Why should you not elect Chuck Sauders? Here are some simple facts to consider. Chuck Sauders was on the School Board until 2002 when he became principal at Silver Lake Elementary School. When he stepped down, Mark Minatel filled the seat. He has been a yes man for McGuire too and conveniently was absent during the key votes of closing the schools.
Chuck Sauders as principal sat back and allowed McGuire to close Silver Lake. Not once did you hear any objection by him unlike the Atwood principal. Sauders was paid nicely for stepping down from the school board and becoming principal at Silver Lake. Now that the school is closed, he was offered a teaching position instead of principal at another school. In his anger he has decided to run for school board in district four.
Don't elect these two men Folk and Sauders.
Instead vote for those that will listen to the people and NOT be bought off by WCS.
Vote for Dan Robinson in District 3 and Sterling Watkins in District 4.

Autumn Splendor
Editor, Times-Union:There is no month more beautiful, more lustrous, nor scintillating then October. What is lovelier than a glorious October day opulent with gorgeous red, orange and yellow foliage beneath a glowing, azure blue sky, filled with drifting, fleecy white clouds rolling by? Furthermore, there's nothing that beats a long solitary walk in the country on a bright, balmy autumn afternoon. Back in the 1930s when I was a teenager, I often hiked down a quiet, deserted road, and whenever I ambled out through the country, glancing about me, I was overcome with a calm, peaceful feeling of utter devoutness; furthermore, gazing at all of nature's glory and grandeur before me, I felt as close to the Almighty as one can possibly get.
Right now, I would like to idle down some lone country road, but in this day and age I'm afraid that such an attempt is impossible. With all of the vehicles and conveyances motoring about, even the back country roads are often abundant with traffic; however, if I could take just one more of those peaceful, solitary walks as in days of yore, for a few hours I could escape all of the ugliness and depravity of the world. I could escape much of the political back-stabbing and dirty name calling that goes on today in the news media and on television; furthermore, rather than listen to all of that political muckraking and name calling on TV, I'd rather hear from those dear "Little Goblins" when they come around at the end of October and knock on somebody's door and cheerfully yell out, "Trick or Treat!"

Politics And Morals
Editor, Times-Union:Republican or Democrat - it doesn't matter which party you belong to or with whom you align yourself. After all, this is America, is it not We are a free country and free to choose our own political beliefs. However, just because you are a Republican or Democrat does not mean you are immune from virtues, morals, honor and truth. I believe that both parties can equally stand for such.
Living in Washington, D.C., in 2002-2003, I had firsthand access to some statements made by legislators and others, mostly while driving around the Beltway. The statement I heard from a Democratic senator from New England over the radio on one certain day caused me to cringe. The statement was made in regards to a federal judicial nominee that President George W. Bush had recently announced. The senator's comments were concerning whether or not he would vote to confirm this man for this judicial appointment. His comment was something along the lines of saying that he didn't mind this nominee's religious beliefs, just as long as he kept his morals out of the court. Upon hearing this I said to myself, "Well, then, Mr. Senator, why don't you just drive through every red light you come upon today and, for that fact, if your wife happens to be in a bank that is robbed at gunpoint today, you, sir, Mr. Senator, have no gripe in the matter. You don't have the right to want to charge this man with armed robbery and possibly murder, because that, sir, is using your moral judgment." OK, does anyone see anything wrong, now, with the comment that this senator made?
I believe and support Republican values and policies partly because that was my upbringing, but mostly because that is the way I have chosen to allow my own political beliefs to go. Apparently, for various reasons, the Democratic Party at the national level has taken the low road, saying that morals have no place in our courts, schools, etc. I am sure that there are Republicans who would go along with this idea, as well, and I am sure that there are God-fearing Democrats who would completely disagree with this concept. However, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and Indiana Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Kernan support these ideas. (i.e., abortion and gay marriages). Republican President George W. Bush and Indiana Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels are both men of high virtue, morals, honor and truth.
If you vote for George W. Bush to be America's next president and for Mitch Daniels to be Indiana's next governor you can be sure that they will do their best to see that virtues, morals, honor and truth remain in the high places in this land.

Endorses Watkins
Editor, Times-Union:For the upcoming Warsaw School Board election, we need to endorse Sterling Watkins for the District 4 seat.
Watkins will strongly provide a new vision and responsive leadership for the parents and their children in our community. As neighbors of Watkins, we have witnessed first hand his initiative, energy and commitment to resolve issues of concern to those around him. With his experience as a board member of the Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce, Watkins understands the needs of our growing community. As a coach for the Kosciusko County Special Olympics, he understands the needs of your son or daughter. With his 18 years of business leadership, Watkins knows how to effectively make sound decisions that serve the best interests of people.
With his vision for positive change and with his enthusiastic leadership, Watkins will listen to the public and ensure that you have a chance to be heard. Often, a fresh and open mind with no preconceived ideas is what is required to "raise the bar" to a new level of performance.
If raising the educational and fiscal performance of our school system matters to you and to your children, support Watkins for the 4th district seat on the Board of Trustees for the Warsaw Community Schools. If you support Watkins, you will find you have gained a strong avenue for communications distinctly different from the other candidates.
