Look At The Facts

Editor, Times-Union:
Before people just blindly follow Al Gore, one should look at the facts. Please remember that before the Republicans took control of both houses that the Contract with America was called a risky scheme and would never work. Before the Republicans took over both houses Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore passed the largest tax increase during peace time. Mr. Clinton's and Mr. Gore's administration is one of the most investigated administrations that I can remember.

In mentioning George Bush Sr. presidency, one only has to look at who controlled Congress. The people on the other side of the aisle never believed in balancing the budget. It was not until the Republicans brought spending under control that the budget became balanced.

But I do have agree with one thing Al Gore said, which is, the federal government is smaller than it was when they came into office. The 300,000 employees that he was talking about, the majority was in the military.

Please tell me one thing, in critiquing Governor Bush's experience one only needs to look at who we elected back in '92, it sure was not the best the country has to offer.

Mr. Gore had eight years to fix Social Security, Medicare and prescription drugs. What has he done?

Remember when Medicare was originally proposed, it was supposed to cost $300 million. Well, so much for estimates.

A surplus exists for one reason, that is, the American people are taxed too much. I do not work for the existence of the government.

Silver Lake School

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing this letter to voice my concern and rally support against a recent proposal made by Warsaw Community School Corporation. As a viable option to reducing ADM (average daily membership) cost per student incurred by the corporation, the closing of our local elementary school in Silver Lake is being discussed.

I feel our children are at serious risk of losing the benefits our small school has offered for many years. Students and faculty alike are rewarded daily by the sense of pride in a job well done. No one falls through the cracks or is lost in the numbers in a school our size.

Not only has a quality education been afforded our children in this building, but it has also been a valued focal point in our community.

As a rational adult, I realize that "dollars and cents" play an important role in the decisions we all make. Hopefully, through the combined efforts of insightful elected officials, hard-working taxpayers, dedicated teachers and supportive parents, our kids will not be affected by a business-like decision made to cut costs without exploring all means available.

I urge all who have any interest in education, community affairs and school tax investments (this should cover everyone) to attend the upcoming Warsaw Community School Board meeting scheduled to be held on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Let's take a close look at the process and find out how the decisions are made that affect so many.

Honor Our Veterans

Editor, Times-Union:
Honor our veterans.
I was very sad when I heard the news last week regarding the sailors being killed on the U.S.S. Cole. These brave sailors gave their lives for freedom. My heart goes out to their families in their time of sorrow. People everywhere should remember these veterans and their families in prayer. I was moved to see the many local businesses that flew their flags at half-mast in honor of these veterans.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11th. We owe our freedom to all veterans. Some, like the men and women from the U.S.S. Cole, gave the ultimate sacrifice. Others came home to live with their families and enjoy the freedom they fought so hard for.

One of the biggest freedoms we have is the right to vote. So, Americans everywhere exercise that right. Get out Nov. 7th and vote! Whether the candidate you vote for wins or loses, the major factor is you have the right to pick and choose - no one forced you - no one is dictating who's running our country.

Americans - make every day Veterans Day. Thank a veteran everyday for your freedom. Say a "Thank You" prayer for the veterans who gave their lives for us.

Candidate Speaks

Editor, Times-Union:
I am your Democrat candidate for the Indiana House of Representatives, District 22. District 22 is comprised of all or part of Kosciusko, Marshall and Wabash counties.

I am married with five children, a lifetime resident of Indiana, military veteran and a retired fireman/EMT. Some of my past and/or present memberships and affiliations are the the Masons, VFW, American Legion, FOP, NRA, Civil Air Patrol, AFL-CIO and others.

I have served on the Wabash County Liquor Board, the City Traffic Commission and as the city Democrat treasurer. I am a former candidate for city court judge.

I am a first-time candidate for a state level office, but do not think of myself as a politician. I am just an ordinary guy who has served his state and country for over 30 years and wants to do more.

I believe that all persons of all parties should have a choice of candidates to vote for. Until now, my opponent has run unopposed. He is a full-time schoolteacher and I am retired. As such, I can and will dedicate myself fully to the responsibilities and demands that being your state representative will require of me. I promise that I will represent each of you equally and without bias.

Common Ground

Editor, Times-Union:
As a regular reader of the column by Charley Reese, King Features Syndicate, I usually find myself in direct opposition to his beliefs and opinions, although he is always thought provoking.

However, his column on Oct. 20, regarding St. Jude's Children Hospital, had my complete agreement.

Nowadays, too much time is spent attacking those whose viewpoints differ from ours. How refreshing when we can find common ground, no matter how slight. It's a start.
