God And Evil
Editor, Times-Union:As I read the letter of religion and inhumanity (Oct. 15), I felt a real need to respond to this letter.
Yes, God created all things, including evil. God did not make evil. When Lucifer (Satan) made the choice of trying to exalt himself over his creator (God) he made evil, or sinned.
God put him down. Man did the same thing. God put the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the midst of the Garden of Eden. He told man not to eat of this tree. When man made the choice to eat of the tree, he sinned or did evil. God created the knowledge of evil, He does not make evil. God gave dominion of the earth to man. Man, by sinning, gave that dominion over to Satan. Now Satan is know as a deceiver and father of all lies and no truth is found in him (John 8:44). Satan has been using people since human time began to further his mission of destroying mankind. Mankind has been born since that first sin in the garden, with a sin nature. You don't have to teach a child how to lie or do evil to another child, it comes naturally. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6 to train up a child in the way they should go. Train them to do good. This is what true Christians are to do, "Good." James 4:17 tells us "if we know to do good and don't do it, it is sin or evil."
When the Lord first started the church, Saul thought he was doing God a favor by killing and putting Christians in prison. He was touched by the Lord and became the great apostle, Paul. There has been all manner of torture done to the people of God.
True believers in Christ follow His Ten Commandments, one of which is "thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13). So ask yourself, were the Crusades, the Inquisition and the witch hunts done by the true followers of Christ and His teachings, or by those people that allow themselves to be used by Satan, being deceived into thinking they were doing God a favor.
What people today need to understand is that true Christians are to be "Christ-like." I serve the Lord out of my love for Him, not out of the kind of fear you are talking about. He doesn't make me serve Him. It is a choice I make everyday of my life. And yes, if I do evil, He corrects me. What father doesn't correct the child he loves (Hebrews 12:5-8). He is always pouring out His blessing upon His children. It is plain to see from your letter that you have never experienced the love of God. Why don't you study up on His grace and mercy? After all, God loves you so much that He sent His only son (John 3:16) to take all the sin and evil of all mankind upon himself and to pay the penalty (Hebrews 2:9).
For the wages of sin are death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

Second Amendment
Editor, Times-Union:(Thanks to David Sawesky for the new typewriter.) Guess he thought the reason I haven't been writing as much was because my old one had died. Not so, but this one is sure nice. Going to take a while to get used to all the bells and whistles but I'm getting there.
Have been wanting to write about this for awhile but just got all the information I needed. Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings dismissed charges against Dr. Timothy Emerson of San Angelo, Texas, for possessing a firearm while under a restraining order. Judge Cummings ruled that Dr. Emerson "has a right to own firearms under the Second Amendment and that any law infringing upon that right is unconstitutional."
Moreover, Judge Cummings ruled that "the Second Amendment is a protected individual right and not a right belonging to an organized militia."
Of course, the Clinton administration has appealed the decision but if they lose again, the case will probably then go to the Supreme Court, a situation the Clinton administration would like to avoid. If the Supreme Court upholds this decision, which is very likely, it will strike down thousands of gun laws and trash some 30 years work by the gun-grabbers. Sweet dreams, Sara.

Religious Commitment
Editor, Times-Union:While preparing for my board review exam in Geriatrics I came across this quote in the Geriatric Review Syllabus, which is the official review document of the American Geriatric Society. I quote: "Persons with the lowest feelings of self worth tend to be among those with very little religious commitment, whereas hope and positive mood states have been consistently associated with those having the greatest religious commitment." I think this speaks volumes in rebuttal of the rather off-hand comments made in Playboy magazine by "The Body." Given the fact that research, facts and thinking seem not to enter into the utterances made by the present governor of Minnesota, I can only express thanksgiving that I don't live there.

Evolution
Editor, Times-Union:Recently you published a letter from Ms. Vale, who said that Mr. Reese's article about Darwin's Theory about Evolution was "bunk."
All evolutionists that I have read about believe and teach that all life evolved from one-cell organisms. But they have failed to say or proved where this one-cell organism came from. We all know that it takes life to produce life. Since the beginning of time on this planet, I have never heard of anything dead that produced life. No farmer in his right mind would plant dead seed.
Johsua told the Israelites "that the Living God was among them (Joshua 3:10); this living God who created man from the dust of the earth, breathed in his nostrils and he became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7). Which of them do you believe?

Failure Of Humanism
Editor, Times-Union:Recently, I submitted a letter that considered the total failure of humanism, atheism and paganism in history. It noted that the horrors of history have been the result of man's sins as he has attempted to live without God. Jim Snyder of Plymouth responded that these horrors have been caused by religion. Sadly, I have to agree that religion has been the source of much horror in history. Even Christianity (both Catholic and Protestant) has mounds of grotesque skeletons in the closet.
The God of the Bible allows zero justification for brutality, torture, murder, sexual crimes, fraud, etc. Sadly, all these things have happened, and still happen, in the name of Christ. These acts result from the sins of individuals and are not condoned by God or the Bible. The Bible calls people to kindness, forgiveness, generosity, mercy and all other behaviors that emulate Jesus Christ and God.
But, there is no justifiable logic for believing that humanism or atheism provide the solutions for the problems of history. Consider the atheistic governments of history and you will find gross intolerance, annihilation of millions, corruption on a grand scale, political imprisonment, etc. Consider Russia (millions starved or murdered under Stalin alone), China, Romania under Ceausescu, other Eastern Bloc countries before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Cuba, etc. You will not find any paradise of human rights here, but extreme oppression of all dissent.
Political systems are not the problem. Absolute monarchy, capitalism, socialism, and even communism could all be perfect forms of government if it were not for sin. If everyone were sinless, if nobody was greedy or wanted control over others to their own advantage and if everybody loved everybody else as much as they love themselves, any of these systems could work wonderfully. Sin corrupts governments, economics, science, religions of every kind and even institutional Christianity. Don't blame God. The problem is the sinful heart of man and his lust for money, power, sex and whatever else he thinks will satisfy him.
My letter did not call anyone to any religion - even institutional Christianity. The verses I quoted call people to faith in Jesus Christ alone. No church, including mine, can save anyone. Believers should carefully choose one in which the focus is Christ and not mere religion.
Jim sees just one aspect of God when he refers only to fear and punishment. God is also loving, kind, merciful and compassionate to those who come to him in faith and obedience. Jim said he read my article in disbelief. The real problem is unbelief. Read John 3:16-21 and verse 36. If you believe in Christ you will have eternal life. If you don't you are choosing eternal damnation. Sin is the problem. Jesus is the only solution. Though he was sinless he died to pay the penalty of sin for all who will believe in him. That is mercy.
Judging by his well-written article, Jim appears to be intelligent and articulate. It was sad that he ended his letter by demeaning every religious person as ignorant and superstitious. Nothing is proven by summarily dismissing those one disagrees with as ignorant. Name calling only creates intolerance, emotionalism and bitterness. There are extremely intelligent people among every religious and atheist group in the world. We should be able to have free and cordial dialogue, and walk away friendly - even if we still disagree.
I wish to thank Gary Gerard for allowing this kind of dialogue in the paper. This is free speech, and few papers allow it. But, perfect dialogue is with God. Get a Bible, read the Gospel of John and get to know Him.

Harold - does your entire life revolve around guns? Why is gun ownership so important? Do you plan to shoot someone or something? Does the thought of taking a life give you a "thrill?" People such as you with your "gun mentality" frighten me!
Albert - move to your wife's hometown in Germany, you'll be much happier and we will be spared your feeble attempts at humor at the expense of others! Indiana, 50th in education standing? Rubbish! Get your facts straight before regaling us with your ignorance.

Dalton Memories
Editor, Times-Union:I came from the farm on the Clunette Road. We were taught to help Mom and Dad and do your work right, work hard, save your money, don't buy anything you don't need or can't afford and take good care of everything for a rainy day. Today, a lot of people don't do that, they buy and file bankruptcy.
I worked at Dalton Foundry, driving a fork lift. I was the only woman to drive a fork lift, the rest were men, but I didn't get a man's pay - $25 a week. The mills and grinders were in one big room. My job was to dump the big hoppers of castings into the mills. I knew I couldn't unlock the big lock on the hoppers with my hand so I decided to tilt the hopper back to unlock it and then tilt it forward to dump into the mills, hoping I'd hit the mills and wouldn't dump the castings on the other side of the mills on the floor as there were men sitting on the floor checking the castings for the grinders behind them, but I was always lucky. Sometimes John Doyle would help direct me to pull up right to dump into the mills.
The first day on the job, I was looking for the ladies rest room. The molders were the next room from the mills. The first molder came up right away and told me where to find the ladies room. He said second door to the right. I had to walk through all those molders and started to sit down and a man came running in and ran out real fast. This molder told this man to go to mens rest room and check on a man that had been in there a long time to see if something was wrong. I was really embarrassed to walk back to my job past all those molders laughing. This molder came over and said he was sorry, he wouldn't do it again. But every several days he would pull another one. There were more than 300 men working there and around 15 women in another room.
After I'd unload the castings into the mills, I took the empty hoppers outside in the cold winter, snow and zero weather and took the tubs of inspected iron from the grinders out into another room. If the foremen wanted something done, they would come to me. One day Dan Leedy, the personnel director, came over to me to have his picture taken with me on the fork lift. When everyone went home and the molders poured off, I had to take a broom and sweep up all the black dirt in the big room and pick it up with a dust pan. It would take me about two hours. Then I would walk home which was downtown and walk back to work in the morning. I started driving but it left a scum on my car and wouldn't wash off. I never heard anyone complain about working there, it was a job.
The paper is filled with jobs for people to work, but it seems people don't want to work and get on welfare. Some people are unable to work and need help. If you are on welfare and able to work and want people to look up to you, get a job and support yourself.
After I quit the foundry, I set my husband up in the electrical contracting business, he had the knowledge and I had the money. We did all the electrical work for Daltons. Twenty-one years ago, we bought our house on Center Street, just two blocks from the foundry. They have made a lot of changes. No more iron on the house or black greasy dirt or black dirty smoke in the air. We do get an odor sometimes, I just call if it gets too bad. John Kimple worked 28 years as an environmental engineer and is now in the surveying business, so they hired Barry Fordanifhas.
I did go over to the Caylor Nickel Clinic at Bluffton a year ago in September and had a complete physical. Everything was just fine, cholesterol and sugar a little below normal, so the foundry hasn't caused me any harm after 21 years living here and working there two years.

Running Stop Signs
Editor, Times-Union:Here's a warning to everyone. Please watch the crossroads when you are driving and/or riding with someone. Did you know that teenagers are running stop signs?
Not quite a month ago, my husband was hit by three teens in a car who were out running stop signs. Because of an eyewitness, we know for a fact that they had actually run at least a total of four stop signs before hitting my husband, which sent him end over end. Thank God, my husband nor the teens were seriously hurt. But two teens did run from the scene and the driver did try to say that his brakes failed, but the witness knew better. Since this has happened, we have been telling our relatives and friends to be aware.
Then today, we had a friend tell us that if it had not been for us they would have hit a teen. While out taking their daughter to the middle school, the father saw two cars on the side road heading for their stop sign. The father, who did not have to stop, slowed anyway and was thankful he did because the first car ended up skidding to a stop at the middle of the road. The father was slow enough that he had time to react and swerve around the car. Looking in his rearview mirror, he saw the second car run the stop sign.
Are all teens running stop signs? Of course not. Is it just our school district? No. We know of at least two others where the teens are doing this. Is it just teens running stop signs? No, this has always been a problem. But it's the teenagers who are doing this as a game. Someone is going to get hurt or killed. It may be the teen or teens. It may be their brother or sister they are taking to school. Or it could be someone they hit. It may be an elderly couple, a mother, father, infant, you or me. Whoever it may be, it will happen if this is not stopped. So please pass this on and stay alert.
