Editor, Times-Union:On Nov. 3 there is a very important vote that we can make and a new direction we may take. It is highlighted by a recent exchange of letters to the editor.
Recently Mr. Bob Villa attacked our congressman, Tim Roemer, for tax and spend policies. The congressman responded, restating his television commercial language that he has never voted for a tax increase. It was Mr. Roemer's letter that prompted me to break my self imposed silence in this year's congressional race.
The two things that are compelling about the Roemer letter are these:
First, the tone of the letter is NOT the Tim Roemer I know. The letter, particularly last sentence, was obviously written by a new staffer. The condescending tone of "Thank you Mr. Villa for allowing me once again to promote my record..." is the smug arrogance of someone trying to make an impression among congressional staffers. For the record Congressman Roemer has over a half million dollars in his campaign coffers plus the attention of the local and, lately, to some degree, the national media. He does NOT need Mr. Villa to provide him an opportunity to promote anything.
Secondly, despite Mr. Roemer's assertion that he "never voted for a tax increase," the facts are simply otherwise. To verify this, you may check the Congressional Record for March 18, 1993, recorded vote 84. Perhaps Congressman Roemer could provide us with an appropriate interpretation of the meaning of this vote in favor of a binding resolution for the Clinton Budget that can dance lightly around some unique definition of his words. I call this vote entirely from memory so there may be others. However, I am no longer a candidate and the lack of a real Republican challenger has prevented these facts from being presented long ago.
To Congressman Roemer, Tim, you have the ability, knowledge, temperament and experience to be a first rate Congressman. Why not begin to live up to that potential? You may begin by telling voters the straight story about what's going on in Washington instead of the poll driven spin of the DNC.
To the voters, there are really no close races for us this year, but there is a very important vote you might make. That vote is for the Libertarian candidates, particularly Steve Dillon for Secretary of State. Understand I'm not suggesting that there is a prayer of their winning in 1998 but it will send the message that you are tired of the "no-choice" offered by the two wings of the incumbent party.

Editor, Times-Union:Packerton Neighborhood Watch has been made aware of someone asking for donations for the Puckett children. This is an attempt for someone to put money in their own pocket. The Packerton Neighborhood Watch only has fundraisers to benefit the whole community and the Pucketts are a very big part of the fundraisers. They feel that whoever is doing this does not have the best interest of the Puckett children in mind. The neighborhood watch would like to ask anyone receiving any cards, letters, etc. asking for donations, please notify: Connie Puckett, 8073 S. Thomas Drive, Claypool, or Pam Hall, 8037 S. Packerton Road, Claypool.
Packerton Neighborhood Watch has not asked for any donations since early July.
Oma Jean Bradley, Claypool
Grace Village Says Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:The Grace Village Board of Directors, and Administration would like to express a special thank you to all of the staff, physicians families, residents and community supporters involved with the Grace Village Health Care Center. These individuals have once again made it possible for the Health Care Center to be found in substantial compliance with all state and federal regulations during its annual Indiana State Department of Health Survey. No deficiencies were cited in its most recent survey. Thank you for caring so much!

Editor, Times-Union:Well, I am shocked! A deer was attacking a conservation officer! Some deer have no respect.
I see also that Indiana now has 3-foot lizards running around. That's just great! Next thing you know, people will be reporting lizards biting police officers.
I am of course just poking fun at what I thought were two pretty good articles in the Times-Union this week. I can still see that angry deer in the background as the EMTs escorted that C.O. away. Ha Ha! (By the way Mr. Hepler, I hope you are doing well.) It's nice to see some interesting news for a change. I'm sick of all the political junk. I wish someone around here would spot a UFO or something! HA!

Editor, Times-Union:After reading the story about Jalaine Brumfield, the clerk who was caught stealing fine money, I was completely shocked and appalled. Not only did I feel this way because of the unthinkable acts of thievery and deceit, but the fact that no jail time was handed down to her. Lets examine this case. Not only did she steal from her employer, and tax payers, but she stole from innocent people trying to do the right thing by paying their fines. Lets assume that hadn't the young lady who's license that got suspended because of Jalaine Brumfield's scam come forward, she would still be pocketing thousands of dollars to this day. Lets also assume that more than one person had their licenses suspended. Of all of those people, I am sure someone was pulled over in that time who had a suspended license. Driving on a suspended license is a serious offense, and an officer can and will arrest an offender. So Jalaine Brumfield may have been responsible for a number of arrests that were made because of her little scam. Is that fair that somebody in a position such as hers, who should they choose to abuse it, control peoples lives. I think she should serve every day of that suspended sentence to think about it. She is a criminal, and should be treated like one.
