Hard Work
Editor, Times-Union:A long time ago when we bought this house, there was just the house beside me to the east that Ron McDowell owned and then he retired from Dalton's and sold it to Mac Silveus. Mac lived there for a long time and then he sold it. There wasn't anything to the east - no shopping centers, filling stations, etc. Then Mayor Engle said, "Well, Kate's moved in here so Center Street is going to change." I guess he was referring to the home we bought from Mr. Steckham on Old 30 West by the river on 10 acres plus 16 lots. There wasn't anything out there then - no homes, no filling stations, not even Donnelley's was there, and then everything grew. The lots sold real fast - Melody Acres came in. Now it's hard to get out of the driveways to get on Old 30.
It's the same here trying to get in or out of my driveway. The street department would always paint a lane into my drive. This year I called the mayor's office, as there was no lane into my drive when they painted the street lines; maybe they were too busy as Warsaw is growing too fast in population. It was terrible after dark to know where to turn with traffic coming from the east going west. I was afraid to turn for fear I would hit the curb and cause a big accident with the oncoming traffic. The neighbor's drive and my drive are only 13 feet apart. The other day I noticed they had painted a lane into my driveway. I'm happy and thankful you got this done. You work very hard.

Attack Politics
Editor, Times-Union:I am shocked at some of the things Jay Rigdon has said about Congressman Mark Souder. Is there no decency left in politics and government? Is this all they can do now? So far, Mr. Souder has not attacked Jay Rigdon back, and that is good to see. Maybe if Mr. Rigdon stops his attacks now, we can still have an honest, civil campaign.

Bleeding Taxpayers
Editor, Times-Union:Every two years folks run for office and seek my vote. Those who hold the office use the free mailing privileges that they vote themselves to tell me how much they are doing for me at my expense. Those mailings, of course, I pay for. Interestingly, they never seem to write me a list of all of the ways they have increased my tax burden.
The tax burden on the average American is about $50 of each $100 we earn.
I am going to vote against the folks who promise to help me.
Government help is like a blood transfusion from my right arm to my left arm with a leaky hose that runs through the politicians' pockets. Government cannot give me what it has not first taken from someone else. I am tired of being that someone else.
What is the best way to stimulate the economy? Stop bleeding the taxpayer to death.

Chapman Web Site
Editor, Times-Union:We invite you to browse the new official Web site for the Chapman Lakes Conservation Association Inc., and Chapman Lakes Foundation Inc. now online for all to see: www.chapmanlake.com
While the site is still under construction and being developed, we think it provides a good avenue for our members and others to get quick information about us. The site will be updated frequently, particularly the "Hot Topics" page. We'd like to know what you think about our new site, too. There are a total of 11 pages, including an aquatic plants page accessed through a link from Eurasian Watermilfoil on the "Hot Topics" page. Our links page now only has four ... more will be added in the next several days.
If you would like to share a bit of non-commercial information to be considered for our site, particularly informative links, please e-mail us at your convenience.
We look forward to providing information for our property owner members and a method for them to quickly contact state agencies as well.

Good Administrator
Editor, Times-Union:I would like to make a comment about the Wawasee High School principal.
We all talk about how sports isn't everything, but few provide evidence that this is so.
Mr. Frank has attended a number of the Warrior Band competitions in this long band season with the latest one being in Chesterton (two-hour drive) on Saturday October 19.
This is an example of an administrator in it for the kids!

What To Run On
Editor, Times-Union:I'd like to hear Jay Rigdon talk about something other than debates. Please. You claim that Mark Souder is ducking you. Mark Souder says he is doing his job, which, between holding hearings on West Nile and voting on Iraq, seems to be true. Fine, OK. We get the idea. Doesn't Rigdon have anything else to run on?

Fall Campaign
Editor, Times-Union:I am very depressed about the direction this fall's campaign seems to be taking. Already, the Democrat has had to retract one of his own ads because it contained a false attack about Mark Souder in it. But that didn't seem to stop him. All I have heard so far is personal attacks. There is so much going on that is truly important. We are talking about going to war, and all Mr. Rigdon can do is bash Congressman Souder about how he's supposedly not having enough debates with him? For once, can't Mr. Rigdon and his Democrat allies stop their negative attacks and talk about the issues like adults?

Abortion Candidates
Editor, Times Union:Radical national pro-abortion groups like NOW and the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League are counting on a low voter turnout to help them defeat pro-life candidates and elect pro-abortion candidates.
If only the extreme pro-abortion minority votes, and the majority who opposes unlimited abortion, stay home, then pro-life candidates will lose. If you are pro-life, please be sure to vote on Tuesday, November 5.
Indiana Right to Life Political Action Committee has endorsed the following candidates to be voted for in the Kosciusko County area: State Representative candidate - David Wolkins; U.S. Representative candidate - Mark Souder; Secretary of State candidate - Todd Rokita; State Auditor candidate - Connie Nass; and State Treasurer candidate - Tim Berry.
Indiana Right to Life has produced voter guides with survey responses from candidates. These voter guides can be requested by calling Kosciusko County Right to Life at 267-3481.
Your vote does make a difference. Vote pro-life on Tuesday, November 5, and urge your friends to vote pro-life. It is a matter of life or death for the unborn children.

Deer Population
Editor, Times-Union:I am with Vere Shenfield on the population of deer in the city limits of Warsaw and Winona Lake.
There are several counties that have urban deer zones to where you can only use archery equipment for the harvesting of deer. At least this way the meat can be donated to local food banks and such and not wasted by poisoning them. Also, yes some residents do like the deer, this is also fine, but may I point out that it is illegal to bait deer. Placing out a salt block is baiting and also a way of spreading diseases among the animal population, the big one to look for is Bovine TB. I agree with the board to look into the matter with the DNR, but please follow their suggestions. That is what the DNR is here for.
