Tree Removal

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to thank the fellows from the Warsaw Street Department who took the tree down by the Retired Tigers building.

I was afraid everytime we had a strong wind that it would be blown onto our cars.

Thank you again.

Too Much For Brown

Editor, Times-Union:
I have a problem thinking the Police Dept. would get a grant for a speaker. It troubles me even more that they would want to spend $9000 to hear Denise Brown speak, rather than spend it for the Victim's Assistance Program as it was intended. It makes me wonder how many victims would be doing without, for just a few to hear that speaker, that has no idea of the problems of this county. I have no idea where K21 Foundation gets their money, but I would surely hope they could put it to a better use. Do you think there is no one in Indiana that is probably being paid by the taxpayers already that can speak to this problem?

No Funds For Brown

Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is in regards to the "hidden" remarks about Denise Brown under the heading of "Letter of Credit Set For New City Subdivision."

It was a relief to know that the board turned down the Victim's Assistance Program to pay $9,000 for Denise Brown to speak on her sister's domestic violence. I'm sure there are people in and around Warsaw who can give first-hand information on domestic violence for much less than $9,000. I believe there have been enough millionaires made from that episode and it's time to "let go." I wouldn't walk across the street to hear Denise Brown speak and I certainly assume the taxpayers are not paying for the postage on all those letters being sent out asking for donations to make up the $9,000. I wouldn't give a penny for her but I'd be more than happy to donate money for the American flags to be placed on the ornamental light posts in downtwn Warsaw.

The "letter of credit" was in the Times on Oct. 20th.

Creation Versus Evolution

Editor, Times-Union:
The issue of creation versus evolution continues to be of vital concern to our culture. Lest we think the topic is "old news," just a couple of weeks ago the PBS network broadcast an eight-hour series titled, "Evolution." These programs dealt with many current scientific ideas ranging from the origin of life on Earth, to explanations of why man uses language, to asking the question, "is there a God?"

How dominant and persistent has the influence of the theory of evolution been over the last century? German elitists seized upon Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, "the survival of the fittest," as a major justification for Germany's aggression in WWI. Hitler's Nazi Germany depended heavily on the philosophical roots left over from WWI to fan the flames of fascism leading up to WWII. My generation struggled with the legalization of abortion in the later part of the 1900s. The influence of evolutionary thought unquestionably formed the basis for justifying the abortion of human embryos and fetuses. Now, as contemporary in our social psyche as suicide bombers and biological warfare are the debates over human cloning and embryonic stem cell research. The legal practice of abortion has already enabled the production of numerous embryonic stem cell lines, and I predict that the continued legal practice of abortion will ultimately result in our society condoning research aimed at producing human clones - regardless of what political positions are held on the subject at present. Even much of our current space exploration, in particular the Mars probes, has as its underlying motivation a quest for evidence supporting evolution theory.

Given the assumption that evolution is the only viable explanation for our origin and existence, these things may all seem inevitable. However, there is a very reasonable alternative to evolution which explains not only how but also why we have come to be in existence. The answer is Creation. The amount of evidence supporting the idea that the universe, Earth and life on Earth are the result of intelligent design - not mindless chance - is enormous. And given such an intelligent design, what should we think about the designer?

For those interested in hearing some fascinating information related to "intelligent design" as well as the designer, I invite you to the Scripture On Creation meetings being held in Warsaw at the Center Lake Pavilion this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. each evening, October 25-27. Admission is free.

Stirring Generosity

Editor, Times-Union:
As members of the Winona Lake Fire Department, we have been deeply stirred by the overwhelming generosity of the people of Winona Lake and the surrounding area. The tragedies of Sept. 11 tore at our hearts as hundreds of our brothers and sisters in the fire service gave their lives saving and attempting to save the lives of tens of thousands.

In an effort to show our support for the children of those who laid down their lives, we held a 'Fill the Boot' campaign on the streets of Winona Lake on Oct. 13. We were at our posts for four hours that Saturday. Nearly everyone who passed us gave something. Some came back to give more. Some gave hundreds of dollars. One little boy gave us his only coin, a nickel. Together they gave nearly $2,900.

As we worked, we thought of our own children and of the 15,000 children who lost a mom or dad that terrible day. We thought about our privilege to live in the 'Land of the Free.' We thought about the pride of being a firefighter. We thought about our own mortality and we vowed to redouble our commitment to our community. And, we wept.

"Thank you," to Boss Hog for feeding us. "Thank you," to the Winona Lake Town Board for your support. "Thank you," to our spouses and children who share us with our profession. And "thank you," to each of you who gave and to each of you who keep firefighters in your prayers.

With deep appreciation,
Roger Gelbaugh, Assistant Chief
