Thanks To Buyer
Editor, Times-Union:In 1996, a man who had been previously convicted of a felony was caught committing a crime at our local Girl Scout camp. He was armed with a shotgun at the time. Since Indiana law does not prevent a convicted felon from possessing a shotgun, I contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in an attempt to charge this person in the federal system.
After several weeks of investigation and providing information, a U.S. attorney declined to pursue the appropriate federal charge against this individual. Frustrated, I contacted Representative Buyer's office and explained the problem.
Within a short period of time, I received a call from the U.S. attorney and he agreed to re-examine the case. The end result is that this criminal is now serving time in a federal prison.
Thanks to the help of Congressman Steve Buyer, Wabash County is a little safer than it was before.
Tim Roberts, Sheriff of Wabash County
License
Editor, Times-Union:On April 16, I went to the Warsaw License Branch to renew my driver's license and learned I had reached the magic age to require a driving test. They could not set a date then, but I had to call them on the following Tuesday. The earliest date for the test was May 8, which meant I would not be able to drive legally for eight days. Syracuse and Nappanee could not give me a date earlier than May 12.
I wrote to Governor O'Bannon and Senator Kent Adams seeking help since I had to drive during those eight days. They both turned the letters over to Mr. Cary A. Gibson, Commissioner, Bureau of Motor Vehicles for him to provide a solution. The only thing I got from him was the legal requirement for taking a test, which I already knew about and he did not address my problem.
I wrote to the Commissioner on May 8, and told him that the solution would be that where the driving test could not be given before the expiration date, that the bureau provide a temporary license for the period of time until the driving test could be given. He has not responded to my letter, so obviously he does not care about us. This could be done very easily. My solution was to drive illegally for the eight days, including going to the license branch on the 8th and driving the test.

Halloween
Editor, Times-Union:Halloween comes but once a year, and I suppose that once is enough for most people. I know a sanctimonious lady who doesn't like Halloween. She thinks that Halloween is the work of the devil; therefore, she doesn't allow her children to participate in Halloween activities. Well, all I can say to that is, if Halloween is a work of the devil, then, on that night, there are hordes of adorable little "demons" running loose, shuffling through leaves and knocking on doors and spreading "evil" throughout the community.
When I was a kid in Leesburg, numerous teenagers engaged in all kinds of daring and exciting Halloween capers. Oh, they didn't commit anything so drastic as putting razor blades in apples, or poisoning the candy, and they didn't even attempt to wrap 100,000 feet of bathroom tissue around the bushes or trees; but, they did manage to pull off some pretty amazing stunts that bore an impact on the inhabitants of the town of Leesburg.
I recall that year, when a mischievous boy and girl got bored and yearned for something exciting to do on Halloween night, so they took a stroll down the back thoroughfares of Leesburg, and had the time of their lives shooting out street lights.
I also remember one particular year when, on the morning after Halloween, on my way to school I glanced up toward the roof of the Church of God and discovered an old buggy straddling the gable, sitting there stiff and proud as a weather vane. I found out later that a gang of ornery high school "incorrigibles" had banded together and put the buggy on the roof. I never did find out, though, just how they managed to get that big, cumbersome vehicle all the way to the top of the church, but they certainly did it. Later in the day, the town marshal gave the boys strict orders to get that buggy down from the church roof at once; but, I doubt if the pranksters experienced nearly as much fun and rollicking hilarity getting the buggy down from the church roof as they did while hoisting it up there.
One year, the kids spent Halloween night upsetting outside toilets, and I was informed that an old man happened to be occupying one of them at the moment. Well, after the toilet had toppled and crashed about him, can't you just imagine the old man muttering in shocked surprise just as the old man in the funny story had muttered. "Hm! I wonder what caused that? It was either an earthquake, or them beans I had fer supper was workin' overtime!"

Volleyball
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in regards to the article in the sports section of Friday's paper "With No Big Gun, Warsaw Exits Early."
When I read this article it upset me greatly. I always thought that a team worked and played together and did not put their fate in the hands of one person. If this is the case why is the rest of the team working hard in practice all season long if the coach only cares about one person. Sure, Nancy Mason is a very good athlete and she deserves recognition for her accomplishments but what about the rest of the team that has helped her get to where she is. Aren't they entitled to some credit? How good is it for a team to go into a sectional game with their coach thinking that they don't have a chance without their star athlete?
Warsaw athletes put their whole lives into playing sports, don't they have the right to a coach that has faith in them as a team. Athletes already have enough added pressure when it comes to coaches and sports. How do you think Nancy feels now that she is the blame for the loss of the team, especially her senior year and in a sectional game. If the coach really wanted her girls to win sectionals she would have given them the confidence and encouragement that any team normally would need to win. Congratulations to the team for a great season. Even if you didn't make it very far we are all proud of you.

What Are You?
Editor, Times-Union:What are you? Think!
If you support a liar, you are saying that truth doesn't matter. Are you not a liar, also?
If you support a sex deviate and adulterer, you are saying that decency and fidelity doesn't matter. Are you not of the same character?
If you support a person that tries to destroy the reputation of another person just so he can have an excuse to fire him from his job and replace him with a friend, are you not also immoral?
If you support a person that has given knowledge of our sensitive and secret military technology to foreign nations, are you not, also, a traitor?
If you support a person that has violated the sanctity of the FBI files to try to blackmail anyone that might have different political views than he, or might oppose him as president, are you not, also, supporting his effort to become a tyrant and the destruction of freedom for yourself and your descendants?
If you support such a person, can you claim to believe in God or are you just another Atheist?

Auto Accident
Editor, Times-Union:There was an auto accident that happened around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. the 13th. It was at the intersection of Center Street (East) and East Lake Drive. East Lake is the drive west of Burger King. The car that was hit was a grey Grand AM. It was the lead car of maybe four waiting for the red light to turn green.
It was attempting to turn left on Center Street off of East Lake Drive. When the light turned green she pulled out past the stopped right hand lane on east bound Center Street.
This is when the Astro van in the left lane came through the intersection and crushed the whole front end of the Grand AM. And probably came very close to hitting the other cars that were behind it. The other cars were also waiting on the same light on East Lake Drive. This is where we need your help.
Please, drivers in behind this Grand AM need to come forward. I and my family need a witness or witnesses that this light was green. This is very important and please, it needs your attention as soon as possible. Please contact me at 594-3411, if no answer please leave a message with a return phone number.
