Endorsing Sauders

Editor, Times-Union:
For the Warsaw School Board election coming on Nov. 2, we would like to endorse Charles E. "Chuck" Sauders for the seat representing District 4.

Sauders is the only candidate running for the board with a lifetime of experience in the public schools. He recently retired from 36 years in the public schools - two years as a principal and, before that, 34 years teaching in a neighboring school system where he was on negotiation committees as well as winning an Outstanding Educator Award and earning a spot in Who's Who Among American Educators. He knows how education works and how it should work. (He still teaches part-time for Grace College and for Ball State University.)

Both of his daughters graduated from Warsaw Community High School.

Sauders has experience as a past member of the Warsaw School Board, where he served for eight years, several years as its vice president. It was Chuck Sauders who stepped forward in the spring of 2002 to propose we build a new school in Prairie Township. He included in his motion that the board and administration would leave Claypool and Silver Lake Elementary Schools open for five years and study the situation in the southern part of the county during that time. That motion passed, but was done away with after he left the board.

Sauders also has business experience and understands the need to be fiscally responsible since he owned and operated a successful business in Warsaw for 18 years, Sauders' Nursery & Landscaping.

Sauders wants to re-establish communication between the board and the taxpaying public. Chuck is the only candidate with the experience to get the job done. We support him for the 4th District seat on the board of Trustees for the Warsaw Community Schools.

Editor, Times-Union:
In a letter to the editor on October 13, it was pointed out that school board members are elected to represent the interests of the people in their district. The writer obviously supports Mr. England and Mr. Yeiter, who opposed the closing of the schools in their districts. Their opposition is understandable, for it certainly is a hardship for the people in those communities who lost their schools.

However, the other school board members did what was best for their constituents also. Approximately $300,000 was saved this year alone. In the following years, the school district will save $600,000 per year. We should be glad any time that government is able to operate more efficiently. I am aware that the validity of these figures has been questioned, but the reality is that the numbers come from the people who make the budget and they are the ones who know. If these schools had not closed, there would have been teacher layoffs and increased class sizes this year. All school children would have suffered as a result. Everyone who has been represented by the other school board members should thank them for doing the best thing for the entire school district. I hope that voters in the Third District will show their appreciation to Jim Folk and return him to the school board. As an educator, Jim has always looked out for the best interests of all students.
