Sales Tax
Editor, Times-Union:Like something out of "A Christmas Carol," Gov. O'Bannon and the state legislature have to decided to impose the unnecessary sales tax increase 2 days after the start of the holiday shopping season.
We are trying to have an economic recovery. It has been predicted that the holiday season will be slower than past years. The state government knows this will have an ill effect on the state economy. That is why the jump to 6 percent is timed after the elections but in time for the holiday shopping season. The increase could take place in January, but that's a slow time for retailers. The holiday season takes full advantage to squeeze the most out of the consumer. The taxpayer has to buy less, the retailer makes less, but the state makes more.
It is unlikely three ghosts will visit the elected officials before Dec. 1, but we can try to send a message to them on Nov. 5. We once had a surplus with taxes the way they are now. Where did that money go? Taxpayers/consumers are riding this slow economy out by putting some plans on hold and doing more with less. The politicians must do the same.
If the increase in sales tax completely eliminated the property tax, I would be 100 percent for it. But this increase doesn't decrease or eliminate any other tax; other taxes are increasing as well.

Freedom Of Speech
Editor, Times-Union:I hear you, Kristin! First it is freedom of speech, next it is our right to vote. It can go back to the days where people had no rights. The people who think they can push vulnerable people around are just as bad as the bullies that terrorized us as kids. Or even the "bigger" people are terrorized by the still bigger people, and who is bigger than the general public? Aren't we the ones who make the decisions? We elect Congress, mayors and heck, we elect our presidents (with no help from Florida!). It is the little things in life that really push our buttons. I read the script and I thought it was a great act for the kids to put on. They had fun with it, I have also read the new, edited script and let me tell you it sucks, the kids are no longer having fun with the play. Now all they see is the scratched out words which mean they are all victims of some crazed mother out there that is out to protect her child from the devils in the world when in reality it will only hit harder. So thanks, Kristin, and I wish you well.

Go Out And Vote
Editor, Times-Union:After reading on the PBS Web site that this year's primary yielded one of the lowest voter turnouts in U.S. history, I'm issuing an open challenge to all residents of Kosciusko County. Get out there and vote on Nov. 5! Your vote matters.
We Americans have struggled for more than a century so that we all have equal voting rights. Our freedom to choose who represents us is a direct result of those struggles. Our vote to elect those who represent us is a glorious tribute to those struggles. Your vote matters.
By voting, we impact nearly every aspect of life in our community. We can bring about change or make sure things stay the same. By voting, we ensure the continuity of good government. We can impact everything from the prices paid at the checkout line to better employment opportunities. By voting, we protect our rights. We choose responsible leaders who make laws, educate citizens and administer social programs. By voting, we demonstrate our patriotism. We take 15 to 20 minutes in between work, errands and family and we vote. Your vote matters.
My challenge is quite simple. Sometime between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Nov. 5, will you choose to take advantage of the American privilege of voting?
I know I will. My vote matters.

Where's The Justice?
Editor, Times-Union:I noticed in Thursday's paper Oct. 10 under Court Sentencing that one defendant made money.
I fought the Kosciusko County Prosecutor for two years to bring charges of theft against this defendant, way back in May, 1995 through October 1997 and finally gave up because of lack of cooperation and their doing nothing.
Now seven years later they decide to do something. This defendant cashed a payroll check of mine for $392.40; they gave him a year of probation, a $100 fine, $100 initial probation user's fee and $15 monthly probation fee. You add this up and the defendant gets away paying $380 and gets to keep $12.40.
Where was my restitution, I would like to know? The county made sure they got their share. This is just another example of our local justice system running amok. The defendant walks away while the victim is left hanging. I would like an explanation?

Moving Wall
Editor, Times-Union:I recently had the privilege of attending the memorial service for the Vietnam veterans in Syracuse.
The Moving Wall was a vivid reminder of the thousands of young men who lost their lives. It was a very emotional experience, but helped to give some closure to that long-ago conflict.
The service was very well planned and each branch of the armed forces was honored. It brought back the pride with which we served our country. The main speaker, Adrian Cronauer, was excellent.
Thank you to everyone who made this memorial service possible. Your time and effort made this a special event.

Justice Not Served
Editor, Times-Union:It was my wife who was murdered and I feel justice wasn't served. Jason Fisher has really been let off very easy I feel. He should have some charges for what was done to my wife but the prosecuting attorney makes wrong deals with people. But there are things that still can be put on Mr. Fisher. I will never get any justice served in her death, and I feel it's not fair to myself or Kathy's family not to have justice served on this.
