Terrorists And Liberals

Editor, Times-Union:
The latest explosion in Baghdad made me realize how much the goals of the terrorists are the same as those of liberals in America.

1) They both want American troops to leave Iraq. The success of our troops in the nation makes both terrorists and liberals look wrong.

2) They both emphasize how much the people of Iraq hate us. Each time a soldier dies or someone who cooperates with us is murdered over there, the news cameras show the tragedy and would have Americans believe most people over there hate us. The terrorists enjoy how our liberal news operations like to show the destruction and hate how some news operations like Fox News want to show the majority view and the reconstruction efforts. If the news operations in America presented the same message concerning violence and murder in this country, you'd have to conclude that police need to be removed from high-crime areas in order to satisfy the people living there.

3) Both terrorists and liberals hate President Bush and want him removed. Every time I see a presidential candidate complain about our policy in Iraq and how it was a mistake to go to war over there, it's as if the candidates are reading the same things the terrorists are writing. If Bush is defeated, the terrorists will rejoice because they will proclaim victory. They will look forward to having us leave so that they can reinstall a brutal regime in Iraq and maybe punish America even more. The majority of Iraqis and Americans want peace in the country of Iraq. But terrorists and liberals are standing in the way.

When we pulled out of Southeast Asia, more than three million people were murdered and the architects of our withdrawal were virtually silent. If we do the same thing in Iraq and the Middle East, I expect many more murders in America and liberals not being held accountable for the devastation. America, this isn't 1973. The people of Vietnam now want us over there and want to buy our products. The Soviet Union no longer exists. I'm afraid the terrorists will learn this lesson and will attempt to stay unified and provoke the people in the region to continue to hate America so that it can be destroyed. Failure in Iraq is not an option.

Are You Really Free?

Editor, Times-Union:
Are you really free? Forty-five years ago when I started voting you could pay your medical bills even on limited income and with no insurance. Marijuana was not a problem, because the ban was not enforced and nobody was pushing it. The government wasn't telling businesses their customers couldn't smoke. If you objected to smoke you stayed away from places where it was objectionable. You could drive down the highway without a state trooper checking to see if you had your seat belt fastened. The government, lawyers and insurance companies realized there was money to be made on air bags so they made them law. Do you really believe they give a damn about you? Snap out of it! It's the money and the power to control.

You could buy a firearm by mail order and as a teenager that is how I purchased my first two firearms. That was more than 50 years ago and to this day no one has been killed or injured by them. Every business in this country must have a license to operate. Is that so the consumer is guaranteed a bette product? Of course not! It is so the business can be forced to collect taxes for the government. They told us we had to consolidate our schools because bigger is better and cheaper. That was 40 years ago and they are still wanting to tear down our schools. When does the taxpayer get to see the plus side of this insanity?

They told us if we elected Republicans they would give us smaller government. Remember the saying, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." When is enough really enough? The voters of Warsaw have an opportunity in the upcoming election to take a small step toward smaller government. A Libertarian, Daniel Stevens, is running for City Council. We believe that when it comes to government, smaller is better.

Prescription Drug Costs

Editor, Times-Union:
United States citizens are unwittingly being forced to subsidize the prescription drug programs of many other developed nations. Other nations, such as Canada, have cost containment measures that limit the prices pharmaceutical manufacturers may charge for their products. These measures also limit their profits in Canada and most other developed nations. Since all companies must make money to remain in business, and reasonable profits are not available in these other nations, the burden to ensure profitability falls directly on the U.S. citizens ... we pay more!

Before enacting massive government-controlled health care plans that will cost the taxpayers more, why can't we institute cost containment measures that ensure U.S. citizens pay only their fair share? These cost reduction measures would benefit all of our citizens and burden none. I realize that this initiative would need to be enacted over one or two years to allow the pharmaceutical manufacturers time to adjust their pricing structure to comply with these new demands.

In normal circumstances I am opposed to cost containment measures ... these are not normal circumstances. Our elected officials, by their inaction, are forcing many of our citizens, especially the elderly and underprivileged, to make unnecessarily difficult choices about life's basic needs. Why? It seems obvious to me that we need to level the playing field with other developed nations and ensure that we pay only our fair share. What about you?
