Roar For The Tigers
Editor, Times-Union:An appeal to Warsaw fans: This note is sent as a challenge to parents, relatives and friends of Warsaw athletes. As a parent, I feel it is helpful, encouraging, even rewarding to be very vocal in a positive, supporting manner at sporting events. I do not believe in sitting quietly in the stands while my child and his friends give their best effort. I believe it is only natural to do my best to encourage them. I remember how I tried a little harder when I saw my parents encouraging me. Further, I reject the notion that the coaches are solely responsible for making them into athletes without any effort on my part. I believe our coaches do their part to instruct, to train and to equip. I believe it is my part to foster that instruction and then to encourage them as they compete.
For years I have been AMAZED by the relative quietness of Warsaw crowds. To be sure, there have been some loud moments. But on the whole, I have never seen a school where the crowd as a whole seemed so unexcited, so uninvolved. I have been ASHAMED to see coaches walking the sidelines trying to evoke the crowd's vocal support. What an EMBARRASSMENT for them in front of the other teams! And then, to hear an opposing coach whom we have just defeated state that Warsaw's weakness is lack of fan support - THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!
My friends, those are our kids, our teams. They should NEVER step onto or leave a field or court without hearing from the stands the support, the approval, the encouragement of their families and friends to do their very best. Win or lose, we should be cheering. They deserve every ounce of support we can muster.
PLEASE! Let's help our kids! We have a lot of great kids out there. We have some of the best coaching staffs in the state! We ought to be one of the loudest crowds in the state! Opposing teams should fear playing at Warsaw because of the crowd noise in the stands - not just the tremendous teams! Opposing coaches should be envious of our fan support, not belittling it. WE NEED A NEW ATTITUDE OF SUPPORT FOR OUR KIDS, OUR TEAMS, OUR COACHES! An attitude of excitement, of expectancy, of encouragement. To do any less is to fail our part.
PLEASE! LET'S GET EXCITED, GET OFF THOSE SEATS AND ROAR FOR OUR TIGERS!

Supports Bibler
Editor, Times-Union:This is a response to the letters last week pertaining to Coach Bibler's comments on the "On Board with the Vikings" radio program the day after the Rochester loss. The authors of one of the letters suggested that Bibler referred to the team as a cancer. It was obvious to me as I listened to the program that Bibler was referring to the attitudes of some, but not all, of the players. The suggestion that he referred to the team as a cancer is a flat out misrepresentation of what Bibler said. Also misrepresented was Bibler's placement of blame for the loss. The letter suggestion that he was dodging blame with his comments. In fact, Bibler commented that the blame for the loss rests first and foremost with him. Again, I feel that he was misrepresented by the letter. Was Bibler being critical by making these remarks? Of course he was. Who better to assess the condition of a team than its coach. He has the right to be critical - it's a large part of his job, which is improving his team on and off the field to the best of his ability. If some of the players are not putting the team ahead of themselves while in a game or during practice, then should the coach simply dismiss the problem as being outside his area of responsibility? If he did react that way, then he would (and should) be criticized for not attempting to solve the problem. The way Bibler addressed the issue on the radio was not in any way inappropriate, in my opinion. Perhaps some people would question the use of the word "cancer" metaphorically, but if you know Scott Bibler at all, you know that he certainly meant no offense to anyone in his use of the word. His team is a group of young men who will be evaluated many more times in their lives, and taking criticism and using it to improve themselves is not a concept that they are too young for or should be sheltered from. Bibler named no names, the comments were not attacking anyone personally. I doubt most fans could have ever guessed the identities of those that he referred to. Unfortunately, I suspect that many people will now assume, whether correctly or not, that the bad attitudes on the team are the kids who share the same last names of some of the authors of the letters. The letters did nothing except incorrectly recap Bibler's remarks and, in my opinion, send the message that athletes should be allowed to act in any way that they want to with no reaction from their coaches.

Perversion And Corruption
Editor, Times-Union:In reply to Mr. Zartman's rebuttal of my letter concerning homosexuals and the Boy Scouts of America:
I don't think you will find any parents who would want their sons out in the woods with queer leaders. And yes, I'm calling it like it is. If you don't like it, too bad. There is nothing natural or normal about being homosexual. People are not born homosexuals. It is a choice they make as is any other perversion - and perversion it is.
I hope I never see any two people of the same sex being intimate in my community or announcing their engagement or wedding in my hometown newspaper. GAG!!
If you think I'm discriminatory, read Genesis, chapter 19 in the Bible. He may not rain fire down again as he did with Sodom and Gomorrah, but an inescapable, eternal lake of fire awaits all unbelievers as well as those who follow after such perversion and corruption.

Republicans Not All Bad
Editor, Times-Union:In reference to the letter published on Oct. 10: "Republicans are bad," I would like to say that I was undoubtedly harsh on all Republicans when I made the statement that you are all as guilty as President Bush in reference to the Panamanian mass murders. That was not fair, and I do apologize. Nobody could have known beforehand what President Bush was capable of, so I would like to retract that statement. What is important now is that you know what happened, you know what the Bush family is capable of, then you decide. I don't think all "Republicans are bad," I just don't like what the party stands for: "the rich and powerful, and big business."
