Terror Stricken?
Editor, Times-Union:Has terror stricken your heart? Are you afraid to go outside of your home? Are you afraid to spend your money as you did before Sept. 11? Are you afraid of dying? If so, the terrorists are winning. Satan has succeeded in tearing down America. Here's the answer - the best way of fighting back - get right with God!
Our forefathers of this great nation had a relationship with their creator. And so can you. Historical documents reveal a solid foundation in God's word, the Bible, a must-have survival book of the early settlers. The Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and our money all point to the God of this wonderful book. Please allow me to use this inspiring book to help you get right with God, your Creator.
1. Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Admit to God and yourself that you are not perfect; you mess up.
2. Romans 6:23a - "For the wages of sin is death ... " Realize that your sins/faults keep you away from God. You deserve punishment just as you deserve a paycheck from working.
3. Romans 5:8 -Ê"But God demonstrates his own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." Recognize that God loves you very much and he had to find a way to get you, an imperfect person, to be with him who is always perfect. So God sent his only son to die for you. You deserved dying, a penalty or whipping, but Jesus Christ did it for you.
4. Romans 6:23b - "But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Receive this undeserved gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Believe in the one God sent to pay the price of your sins.
5. Romans 10:13 -Ê"For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Lord means boss in our day. So call out to God that you want Jesus to be your full-time boss. No longer do you want to be in charge of your own life. You gladly want Jesus, the one who died for you, to be in charge. When you make decisions of all types you want to know what Jesus wants.
6. John 10:10 - "The thief comes but to kill, steal and destroy. But I (Jesus speaking) have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly." Realize that Satan, the thief, is on this Earth to stop you from believing in the wonderful life through Jesus. Here are some things to do which will keep you strong, believing and following Jesus: a) read the Bible; b) pray to God that he will guide you to an understandable translation of the Bible and he will show you where to start reading; that he will guide you to some other believers in Jesus who follow him; c) turn away from things, habits and sins which Jesus would not like you to do; and d) get baptized (dunked in water) once God has shown you a group of other believers. In front of them and the spiritual world, let all know who your new boss is.
7. Ephesians 3 - Read it for yourself. Realize that salvation is not a seven-step formula to plug-in and be done with, but rather a journey and adventure with God forever. He wants to spend time with you, love you and direct you more than you can ever imagine. God is now your perfect loving heavenly father who wants his best for you.

Reason Clearly
Editor, Times-Union:People have been responding in various ways because of the attacks. The two most immediate responses were the excessively long lines for gas and the volunteers that donated blood and helped with the rescue. The volunteers deserve more gratitude than we can give them. But it is sad that getting gas was the first course of action that others took. Obviously there were people riding on empty tanks that needed gas. But those who brought extra containers to fill were acting selfishly. They were only helping to raise the price, and could have gotten less. God forbid that we might spend a couple dollars more on gas! Even if they couldn't immediately offer aid, they could have at least stayed home and prayed.
Now people are worried about security. It will be getting tighter in areas with a lot of people or of national importance. But some are concerned that terrorism might be a recurring thing. I don't think that men who come up with such an elaborate plan as that would be stupid enough to attack us again, this soon or this often. People would be sure to notice them.
It was suggested that we screen all Arabs. For what good? Because Arabs committed an act of terrorism? That does not make all Arabs suspects. We should be mature and intelligent enough to realize that being Arab (or any other nationality) doesn't make them any more of a threat than wearing flannel and overalls makes someone a redneck. As for those raised in a family loyal to their country (as Mr. Burchette suggested), they are no different than "us" (non-Arabs). We were raised with a sense of American superiority, but if one of us goes and attacks another country, may God and all America pity him.
I think we need to reason clearly and use this tragedy to unite us instead of divide us.

Terrorist Bullies
Editor, Times-Union:It seems as though the terrorists are like the bully on the playground. First he takes your milk money. When he finds out you are not going to fight him back, he takes more milk money. Then he wants your shoes, then your shirt, then your jacket, then your watch, working on up to your wallet and your life. Giving in and turning the other cheek hasn't seemed to help. Whatever happened to socking the bully in the eye to show him enough is enough? Why don't we just show these terrorists that we won't put up with them and give them a good old "sock in the eye."

Mouths Of Babes
Editor, Times-Union:Wednesday night my son and I were watching a television news report which featured some of the intrepid firefighters of New York who were felled Sept. 11. Alex could see I was visibly moved by the stories and asked what had happened to the men. I told him they were lost in the World Trade Center attacks. "So they died heroes?" he asked. "Yes," I said. There had been no mention during that portion of the report of the world's prime suspect in the attacks ... just profiles in courage of a handful of firemen.
Then my son made three quick statements that took my breath away. Without hesitation, he said:
¥ Why does Osama bin Laden have to be so mean?
¥ He should have been taught differently when he was a kid.
¥ Do you think his mom is mad at him?
My son is 6.

Editor, Times-Union:Our community has economically prospered. News stories of the difficult life in the inner cities often astound those residing in our area. However, whether one is in a large town or small, a farm or a city, ever present is a problem to which we may be blinded as a result of our local prosperity. That problem is something all of us experience and that most of us can remedy - hunger.
Through the recent creation of "Roving Chef Inc.," we hope to somewhat lessen that problem in our area.
A year ago Charlie Johnson-Parker began feeding the hungry through hard work and donations. She began using the name "Roving Chef." She, and those assisting her, have worked through the cold of an Indiana winter to serve hot meals to those in need. By setting up her kitchen within a step-van, 5,000 hot meals were served to the hungry in Kosciusko County last winter. By helping to feed the sick, the poor and aged, Charlie Johnson-Parker and the Roving Chef Inc. hope to assist other individuals and agencies in caring for the needy.
Please assist us. Other countries, states and communities will not be the beneficiaries of such assistance. Rather, individuals whom you may pass on our sidewalks, unable to afford a hot meal on a cold winter day, will benefit.
If you desire to donate food, please call 839-8503. Monetary donations may be mailed to: Roving Chef Inc., P.O. Box 705, Pierceton, IN 46562.

Editor, Times-Union:This letter is written in response to Kevin Miller's misconceptions concerning legislation proposed by Senator Kent Adams to aid intersection safety. As proposed, the Senate bill is considered enabling legislation. Passage of the bill would simply allow those Indiana cities finding the need to use cameras on state or federal highways within their jurisdiction to consider using them.
Even though the yellow cycles do fit within standard guidelines, 40 violations were documented in 45 minutes in July at just ONE Warsaw intersection. Each one was the chance for a tragedy. Driver behavior must be changed with consistent enforcement.
1. The legislation proposed by Senator Adams is fair to the traffic violator.
A. The violating vehicle's license plate would be photo documented.
B. A mailed citation would be addressed to the vehicle's owner.
C. The citation would provide for the vehicle owner to name the driver, if indeed the driver had been someone other than the owner. The citation would then be reissued to the actual driver.
D. In neither case would this information be shared with insurance companies - wording in the proposed legislation would prohibit points being assigned to a driver's license based on photographic evidence.
2. Yes, with the proposed legislation, red-light running can be curtailed without cost to all of "us citizens."
A. The program is self-supported by only the violating citizens.
B. The successful red-light camera program is certainly NOT a revenue generator - no citations = no revenue to "add to the government, like raising taxes."
Cameras serve as the eyes of officers, monitoring all violations (and only violations) when an officer cannot be present - therefore providing a means to apply consistent enforcement, a great impetus for behavior change.
I applaud Senator Adams' efforts to increase highway safety and to remove the handcuffs from those Indiana cities who have the foresight to use cameras as an aid to traditional police enforcement.
I would like to extend an invitation to Mr. Miller or anyone else with questions to attend our next Focus on Safety meeting-- or call me at 269-9762.
