School Closings

Editor, Times-Union:
The current WCS administration, and a portion of the school board of trustees, portrays the Sept. 15th vote to close the three rural elementary schools - Atwood, Claypool and Silver Lake - as the end of the story. I, on the other hand, think this is where it begins.

To this day, there has never been a study to support the closing of these schools and to absorb the students within the existing elementary buildings. However, there have been at least two studies that have recommended a new school in the southern district and one in the northwest section. Furthermore, to date there has never been sufficient documentation from the Finance Department to justify the projected cost savings generated by these school closures. From the lack of facts and data given, how could any rational person, in good faith, have been able to arrive at the present conclusion?

When logic and good documentation are missing from a recommendation, no one should be expected to accept this form of decision-making. We as citizens, taxpayers and parents should now hold the administration and the board accountable for their actions. We should demand leadership that endorses a logical, long-term plan for our school system.

Blood Donations

Editor, Times-Union:
Once again I am compelled to appeal to the residents of Kosciusko County for their support of our blood donation opportunities within Kosciusko County during the month of October. Our blood supply continues to be critical with supplies of most blood types at between one and two days! The current need for blood products continues to be constant in nature, and the many different blood products developed from one unit of whole blood enable the treatment of a variety of needs, including disease, illness, surgery, trauma, etc. One unit of blood may support life-saving treatment for up to five individuals, thus your "gift of life" is extended to many people who depend upon a constant, reliable blood supply!

We will host our public blood drive at Center Lake Pavilion Oct. 14 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. I encourage you to call 800-GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3543) to schedule an appointment to donate blood. Of course, you can always walk in and you will be served in a timely manner.

We have additional blood drives scheduled within our county; however, these donor drives are closed to the general public. The following drives will be held on the dates indicated:

n Wednesday, DePuy, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

n Friday, Warsaw Community High School, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students and staff are invited and encouraged to participate.

In conclusion, we were blessed with more than 300 units of blood being donated during the month of September from residents across our county! Please know that your support is greatly appreciated and on behalf of our Kosciusko County Chapter, I wish to thank our donors and volunteers! Together, we can save a life.

Misleading Advertising

Editor, Times-Union:
We received in the mail from FLEET a credit card application that stated that if applied for and accepted, there would be no charges or interest applied to any balance transfers until August 2004, but current purchases would be at a rate of 8.99 percent. After August 2004 the rate, for either or both would be 8.99 percent. It sounded like a good deal. We applied, were accepted and made a large balance transfer.

When we received our first statement, we were astonished to see that there was a finance charge on this balance transfer. We called to get this straightened out and were told that the arrangement was that if we made a balance transfer, then interest would not be charged on purchases until November 2004. This was not the advertised deal and became misleading advertising. We argued about it to no avail. We were told that if we would send them a copy of the proposal, they would possibly honor it! Unfortunately, we could not locate it for it had probably been thrown away.

Moral of this story - If you receive something like this in the mail, read it very carefully and hold on to it until you receive your first statement to be sure it's correct.

We feel we were victims.
