Responds To Red-Light Running
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is in reference to State Senator Kent Adams', District 9, letter. Red light running could be stopped without the cost to us citizens. All that has to be done is to change the timing at the light. Make the yellow last longer and increase the time the light is red both ways. This would only add a few seconds to the time at the light. The red light camera is just a way to add more revenue to the government, like raising taxes. The driver is not the target, the owner of the car is. That is who gets the ticket, so you could get points on your license for someone else's bad driving. I think the people of District 9 should let Senator Adams know how you feel about that. Remember, a vote for red light cameras will be a vote against Senator Adams at election time. I drive these streets and roads every day. Slowing down is the way to save lives, not raising revenues.

Missing Items
Editor, Times-Union:On Labor Day my husband and I were involved in a horrible accident at the intersection of County Farm Road and CR 300S. During the crash, our vehicle rolled over several times, scattering our personal belongings. These items included some brand new clothing. These things have not been returned to us and we would like to retrieve them. Witnesses told us that there also was a white car at the scene that could have been someone trying to help out and clean up the debris along the road.
If anyone knows of the whereabouts of any of our possessions, please contact us at 267-7627.

Mayberry
Editor, Times-Union:On the old "Andy Griffith" show, they had an arrangement whereby Otis could check himself in and out of jail. Since we are building a new jail, how about building a cell for our Otis (Euwin Wendell Bryant). That would certainly save the expense of his being booked in and out of the jail like a revolving door.

Gas Prices
Editor, Times-Union:There have been many letters finding fault with gasoline retailers for raising the price of gasoline on the day the terrorists struck our country. I also think that this was probably not the best thing to do. However, I have found that when I am pointing my finger at someone there are three fingers and a thumb pointing right back at me. It appears to me that the buying public went berserk. Did we not learn something from our reaction to what we thought was going to happen when the century ended? We need to think before going off half-cocked.

Terrorism Preparedness
Editor, Times-Union:In light of the events of Sept. 11, America needs to protect the following potential targets of terrorist activity:
¥ Any source of fresh water, such as rivers, lakes, aquifers and desalination plants. Also included in this category is water and sewage treatment plants and water pumping stations.
¥ The food production and distribution network, such as farms and surrounding fields, storage facilities, meatpacking and canning factories, trucks, trains, ships and planes used to transport food and even local supermarkets.
¥ Electricity generation and transmission networks such as power plants (especially nuclear ones) power lines and substations are also vulnerable.
¥ Such things as oil and natural gas refineries, offshore and onshore oil fields, oil tankers, coal processing plants, hydroelectric dams, uranium mines, solar power collection sites and wind power towers.
¥ The various forms of mass communication, such as radio, TV, Internet, telephone and satellites.
¥ The American financial sector, which includes Wall Street, U.S. Mint and Treasury, the Federal Reserve and even local plants.
¥ And finally, factories that produce weapons for the U.S. military or are involved in some type of heavy manufacturing or construction, such as car, ship, plane and train builders.
As you can see, we have our work cut out for us in defending vital parts of America from terrorists.

Flag Thief
Editor, Times-Union:Jeers to the REAL patriotic person who stole a small American flag from my husband's grave at Oakwood Cemetery. They may be patriotic, but stealing doesn't bother them.

Unconstitutional
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is in reference to George W. Detter's letter, "Screening Arabs." His letter reminds me of the thinking of Nazi Germany. They marked the Jews just to keep track of them. I think everyone should go through a clearance procedure before entering our country. Like visas and passports, not just airports, any time they enter our country. To single out people by race, religion or color of their skin is unconstitutional. We live in a free country. Making it a fascist state where everyone is tracked by the government would destroy freedom, not protect Americans. If you are going to make people wear ID tags at all times, it should be every man, woman and child. So by wanding a UPC code strip, they can tell where you live, where you work and what your religion is; maybe even a quick credit check or see if your taxes are paid; maybe we could offer rewards for turning in our neighbors when they are doing things we don't like; maybe have children turn in their parents when they do something they don't like; or maybe organize groups that intrude on other peoples' rights. We can make people quit doing things that make us uncomfortable. That sounds like Aryan thinking to me. I love this country and want to see the people that do bad things punished. But we can't punish everyone just to get bad people. People fought and died for freedom too long to let terrorists take it away.

Kudos To License Branch
Editor, Times-Union:Re: Warsaw License Branch
I decided to get my plates renewed as well as renew my driver's license at the same time. As usual, I waited until the last minute, the 28th of the month to be exact. I entered the branch and noticed approximately 20 other such citizens. I did not have to take a number or wait for an opening at the counter. I was taken care of and treated very courteously. What was amazing was that I was in there a grand total of nine minutes. They moved myself and all the others through in that time.
Kudos to the branch.

Editor, Times-Union:Re: Letter from Matt Wolkins, Times-Union, Sept. 28, (proud son of the Honorable David Wolkins).
Nice letter, Matt! Can't your father defend himself?
You'll have difficulty convincing me (and others) how "hard our representatives work." It is not a full-time job! Nor was it intended to be so. By the way, what were you doing on one of those "vacations?" Did the taxpayers pay for that, too?
My "ignorance" of what our elected representatives do is a result of inaction by those reps.
I notice you did not refer to the part of my letter dealing with the 26 percent property tax increase for homeowners and a tax break for utilities and businesses. Why not? That was the crux of my letter!
Had Sept. 11 not occurred, all those concerned would have gone to Alaska for a "vacation" at our expense.
I'm awaiting an answer from David, not Matt.
