Hurricane Help

Editor, Times-Union:
During the months of August and September, several hurricanes have devastated Florida, the Southeastern states and areas as far north as Pennsylvania and New Jersey! In addition to the terrific toll on property and resources across many states, regular blood drives in these areas have been cancelled or re-scheduled, thus the National Blood Supply has continued to remain in a critical situation!

Residents of Kosciusko County have the opportunity to participate in several blood drives scheduled for the month of October. Your support is needed now more than ever, as those areas affected by the violent weather work to recover and resume normal operations. During the month of October, the following schedule for blood drives in Kosciusko County will be observed:

Oct. 8, Warsaw Community High School*, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Oct. 12, Center Lake Pavilion, Warsaw, 12:30 to 6 p.m.

Oct. 13, DePuy Corp.*, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Oct. 29, Wawasee Community High School*, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

* Denotes blood drive closed to public

The Red Cross continues to appeal to all individuals to donate blood, and is particularly interested in Type O Negative blood as this is the universal blood donor type, meaning that it can be transfused to anyone in cases involving emergencies. Again, anyone at least 17 years of age, weighing 110 pounds or more and in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please call the American Red Cross at 800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) and make an appointment today! Please keep your commitment ... Patients are counting on your generosity, and remember "Together, We can save a LIfe!"

Register And Vote

Editor, Times-Union:
I received an interesting phone call yesterday in response to my Vote letter to the editor. This person did not realize you could register and then be able to vote in the upcoming election ... so hear me loud and clear. You have until October 4th to register. Please do so. Oprah yesterday had several very famous people on her show. They of course were promoting that young people of age get registered and vote. I thought this was an interesting statistic - 40 million eligible women voters did not get out and vote in the last election! Hello, women! That is pathetic and what is even more pathetic is the number of evangelical Christians who don't vote. Our voice is heard through voting. Decisions about school, homes, business, taxes, everything we do somehow gets back to a government control of some kind. We do have a voice and it is our duty as Americans to get out and vote and have our say.

Be sure you understand the lingo of politicians. When they say things like "accepting the differences of all people," that's a washed over version of accepting things the Christian community should not back. When they talk about women's rights to control her destiny, they are talking about "pro-choice " issues. Please listen and know your candidates. You have until November 2nd to make a clear and concise vote.

Please register. Please vote.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
