Preserving Freedom
Editor, Times-Union:"The spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless. A single zealot may commence persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest and ourselves united. From the conclusion of [their] war [for independence, a nation begins] going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support. They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights. The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of [that] war will remain on [them] long, will be made heavier and heavier, till [their] rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion." -Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Virginia Q.XVII, 1782. (*) ME 2:225
It has been said by many throughout the heartbreak of Sept. 11, 2001, that good can be made of evil. I believe this to be true. Before us is a nation united the likes I have not seen in all of my life. We are rapt daily in patriotic symbolism and sentiment. We stretch out in its glory, our arrogance erased.
We have a distinctive opportunity to advance liberty in a time when many fear the surrendering of the same. Rather than speak of limiting freedoms in the name of national security we should hold accountable those who oversee the mechanisms of protection already in place. If we hold our rulers to a higher standard of honesty and ourselves remain united, we can revive our rights and restore a more permanent liberty.
This is not to say that I am opposed to protecting our citizens. In fact it is the highest calling of any nation's leaders. But to sacrifice freedom for lack of logical reflection would be a grave, if not irrevocable, mistake.
Encourage your state and federal representatives to take an unremitting look at existing means of protecting our liberty as well as our personage.
Enhance existing airport security measures to eliminate breaches. Arm pilots. Reinforce cockpit entryways. Do what is necessary with what we have before incurring the enormous costs of adding thousands of new federal sky marshals to further contribute to national debt.
There is a certain risk we must take, and have taken, every day to preserve the sovereignty of our nation and our free society. We accept this risk gladly as an expenditure of living in the most open, limitless nation on Earth. America is about sacrificing self for liberty, not sacrificing liberty for self. Better to lose my life for freedom than to lose freedom and live.

Defending Freedom
Editor, Times-Union:I tried to sit down and write this letter on Sept. 11, but found myself too muddled, confused and heartbroken. I'm surprised there have been few letters to the editor regarding this most tragic event. It seems most people were more concerned about the price of gasoline.
It was without doubt, the single most devastating and destructive event in the history of the United States of America. Dec. 7, 1941, pales in comparison. There is no similarity. Pearl Harbor was an attack by the Japanese on the American military at Pearl Harbor and Hickman Air Field. Their intent was to weaken our military presence in the Pacific. It was "a day that will live in infamy." However, infamy does not begin to describe, nor can I find words that would be appropriate to describe, Sept. 11.
How could anyone of any race, nationality, religion or belief find the least shred of righteousness in this action? Only the most cowardly, corrupt and insane. I know that Islam has a god called Allah. Does it also have a satan? It surely must because he had his boney fingers tight around the hearts, minds and souls of those simpering, whimpering dogs that slaughtered all those innocent people.
One has to ponder the reasons. Do they hate us so much because of our policies toward Israel and the Arab world? Are they jealous of our wealth? Are they afraid of our military and industrial complex? Or are they just envious of our rights and freedoms as Americans? Whatever the reasons, absolutely nothing could possibly justify an act so treacherous and despicable.
It's interesting to see people rushing to the Internet to read about the prophecies of Nostradamus regarding the twin towers in the city of York. Although Michel de Notre Dame was a most remarkable man, his visions into the future are miniscule when compared to biblical prophecy.
Now we can only hope that President Bush and those around him have the understanding, the wisdom and the guidance of God in the resolution of this most dangerous and perplexing problem. The capture or death of Osama bin Laden would only be the tip of the iceberg, but certainly a good start. Terrorism is a problem that may face this nation for many years and is a terrible and insidious enemy, maybe the most treacherous we have ever faced. Many people were surprised by the events of Sept. 11 and although I was appalled, I was not surprised. I only thank God that each plane wasn't carrying a backpack filled with biological weapons.
It's nothing one likes to think about, but what is to prevent a suicidal terrorist from crossing the Canadian border with a duffle bag full of biological weapons and setting them loose in Chicago? Or maybe a suitcase nuclear device detonated in Dallas or Los Angeles? Nothing is beyond the hatred of Islamic terrorism. These fanatics mean to see us dead, our military and industrial complex destroyed, our vibrant economy in ruin, our religions and our people dead.
Although I find war and killing abhorrent, it is certainly time to start seriously defending our very way of life. I only hope and pray that President Bush and those in decision-making positions not only have the resolve but the understanding and wisdom to make the right decisions at this most crucial time in mankind's history.

Editor, Times-Union:To the members of the community,
The students and faculty of Lakeview Middle School would like to thank all of the patrons of the community who donated so graciously to our Spirit of America pin and bracelet campaign this past Saturday. As a result, the students have been able to donate generously to the American Red Cross fund, which will aid the victims of our latest tragedy. Please continue to display your colors as a reminder that they, indeed, were made with pride to be worn in honor.
We should also like to thank the merchants who allowed our students to disperse their handiwork to the public. We should like to extend our appreciation to the staff at these places for their support, participation and generosity.

Special Olympics
Editor, Times-Union:The directors of Special Olympics, Kosciusko County, would like to join with all those caring people that have shared views and ideas in the Times-Union concerning the tragic events of September 11th. Our hearts certainly go out to all those whose families have lost loved ones or have been injured and applaud the efforts of those that remain dedicated to rescue and recovery.
In perhaps a small way, we hope to brighten your day by sharing with you the accomplishments of another special group - the athletes that participate in Special Olympics. Here, then, is the latest results of the Special Olympics, Kosciusko County summer programs and a look forward to the fall schedule.
Softball - The team struggled through the regular season and finished with a 1-5 record. The team then entered the sectional in Mishawaka and eked out a one-run victory in extra innings only to fall by two runs in the championship game. Many new faces participated in softball this year with a total participation of 17 athletes. Once again, we must thank R.R. Donnelley & Sons for the use of the practice field and the individuals that volunteered to practice against the team.
Golf - All four of the golfers (with their playing coaches) as well as one individual golfer qualified for the state tournament this year. This year qualifying rounds were held for the first time. In the state tournament finals, the Kosciusko County golfers fared very well. Jim Grubb placed first as an individual, Tony Thompson (coach Larry Momeyer) finished third, Jim Grubb (coach Mike Croy) finished third, Ed Condinho (coach John Croy) finished fifth and Wayne Momeyer (coach Brad Hapner) finished sixth. Congratulations on a fine job.
Volleyball - We are still in need of someone to coach volleyball. This is a new sport to Kosciusko County. Although it is too late to take part in the state tournament, the time can be spent learning the necessary skills and rules in preparation for next year. If you would like to help get this new sport off the ground, please contact county coordinator Becky Walls at 594-2962.
Flag football - The team is practicing diligently preparing for the upcoming state tournament in Indianapolis on October 20th.
Bowling - The bowlers have all met the qualification requirements and will be participating in the local bowling tournament at Warsaw Bowl on Saturday October 27th at 1:30 p.m. Stop by and cheer these athletes on and share in the joy of competition truly from the heart.
In closing we would like to welcome any athletes, parents, relatives, friends or coaches to become an active part of Special Olympics, Kosciusko County. Contact Becky Walls and learn how easy it is. Remember, a few of your precious minutes can make a world of difference to someone else and will be returned to you tenfold.

Editor, Times-Union:Two weeks ago today, I sat in front of the television and watched in horror as the events unfolded. Planes crashing into buildings, buildings collapsing with thousands dead. As the days progressed, I experienced fear as to where our country was headed in seeking revenge and justice. Fearful as to the future and what it would hold, not only for myself, but for my children, my month-old granddaughter. My husband and I have four children at home, ranging from a freshman in high school to a kindergartner. And with such a range, the level of communication was unique for each child in regard to how we discussed the events and the actions taken by our government. A significant comment made by my daughter, who is a freshman, was that she thought it was stupid that it took something like this for Americans to show their pride by displaying flags. I had to agree, but also had to point out that we as American's were standing together, showing our pride and resolve as a nation. It is sad that it took something like this to make us recognize what we all take for granted, our freedom, our rights, our opportunities. Something I don't think any of us will ever take for granted again. Things will never be the same in that respect. However, in saying that, we all need to continue living our lives as we did "before." Yes, we're all more aware, but we all need to continue to do all the things we normally do; going to school, attending church or other outside activities, going shopping, going out to eat, taking trips and vacations. If we don't, these terrorists are succeeding, making us afraid, making us "change." We have changed, but not how they might have expected. In my opinion, we've changed for the best. We're more united, we're stronger as a nation and, hopefully, we've all taken a step back and have more appreciation for everything we have. Whether it's what's close to our hearts and family, or whether it's reaching out to those in need, strangers on the one hand, but brothers and sisters as Americans, one and all.

Gas Prices
Editor, Times-Union:Mr. Mike Pitts' letter of Monday, Sept. 24 - "Gas Sellers Treated Unfairly"- was an unbelievable attempt to defend the indefensible. Blaming the customers who were coming to get gas is unconsionable. Any gas dealer who raised their prices one cent to take advantage of a national tragedy is just as guilty as those who raised their prices several dollars. His excuses for having to raise prices are just plain absurd. The general public would be well served if the names of the dealers who did not raise their prices were listed so we could patronize them exclusively.

Silver Lake Fire
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in regards to a structure fire in Silver Lake on Saturday afternoon. I did not appreciate the way that a local man was putting down the entire Volunteer Firemen at the scene that day. Well, I thought that the firemen did a great job keeping that fire under control! And for you to stand there and say, "If the stupid a__es would have been here quicker it would have not been that bad." Well, for your information they were there within a couple of minutes from when the call came in and also they had other area fire departments en route immediately for assistance. You were so worried about them taking an ax to your apartment door! What is more important? Your door? Or the whole line of buildings going up in smoke? I think you need to watch what you say about other people, or just make sure you are not standing next to a local fireman's daughter. Yes, my father was one of the firemen taking a water break to cool off that day. I think you and your friends know what comments you made about them sitting down on the curb! Why don't you put on some fire gear and help fight a large fire and then maybe you would not say such rude things about others. Those "stupid a__ firemen" that you were referring to them as, risk their lives to help even ungrateful people like you!

Arabs
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in response to "Arabs," "Arabs II" and "Arabs III":
Let me get this straight! This is not Germany, people, has anyone ever heard of sleepers?
If we did something like Mr. Deeter suggested guess what ... 7,000 people would not have died! Doing the background checks.
Is America stupid in their own safety? Does anyone here actually understand the word security!
If you're American then you're American. But you know what, if one of your parents came here and you were born but your parents are part of the same cloth of hating America and supported bin Laden on what he did, then you know what ... you are just as guilty as Bin Laden because you supported it plus you didn't let anyone know about it as well!
Freedom is the issue here for every American not supported terrorist disguising themselves as Americans.
But who can you trust is what Mr. Deeter is saying, not kill Arabs.
See the difference here. ... Thinking like that is exactly what they want to you to think.
See the point ... I'm getting at here. ...
If they are hard-working Americans, learn the language! And act American then so be it. But remember the America then is totally different than America now. Things will change people whether we want it to or not. America is scared for life of immigrants without a background check. But detain them till it is official. For the safety of you, me or anyone in a tall building.
Anyone who supports this stupid, idiotic, non-human, crazy madman should deal with the military as well ... including the Taliban!
Anyway, the camps that we had in America with the Japanese was the right thing to do.
Do you know why? Here is a little history for ya ... America found several and several spies. Even the ones born over here. But their family was still loyal to Japan. They found money transfer and support as well.
You can't be naive and expect this won't happen again. Is America so blind not to see this. The only way this country would understand Mr. Deeter's plan if it happens again. Which I hope it will not happen again.
Just even explaining this simple response to security is idiotic. And it just makes me even more mad talking about it.
Mr. Deeter - I accept your plan.
And on behalf of the people who don't accept it ... well get off your heap and patrol this country yourself then. Because apparently, you have no idea what to do period!
And maybe those 7,000 people would have thanked you as well!
Not all Arabs are bad but how do you know which ones are the bad ones ... the ones living in Afghanistan? The work the FBI has done has uncovered hundreds of people with connection to terrorism. And who's to say there are more.
A little bit of advice ... Read your history before you make your opinion!
