Responds To Short Memory
Editor, Times-Union:I'm writing in response to "Short Memory" by J. Robert and Jodie Boggs Sept. 21. This entire article is obviously just more Republican drivel and propaganda.
The visceral attack on the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Anan is an outrage. Those who accuse Mr. Anan of having a short memory seem to have no recollection of past events period. Kofi Anan has been making these statements since the war in Iraq began. In March Mr. Anan said, "The war in Iraq is illegal and the United States is in violation of the U.N. charter, and the Geneva convention!" The Bush administration with its rush to war, ignored the vote of the U.N. security council, arrogantly calling the United Nation irrelevant.
Remember the forged documents? Remember the bugging of the U.N. security council offices? Remember the so-called weapons of mass destruction? Remember the huge surplus we had in the Treasury?
That surplus was for our children and grandchildren's security. Now they have no security, in fact they are in debt.
Trying to twist a lie into the truth is like saying the devil is god. Mr. Anan is a perfectly credible man. His statement is based on facts and actual chronological events. In essence Kofi Anan is a messenger.
Please! Authors of "Short Memory," let us not ignore the message and crucify the messenger. If you could just remember, this was the exact fate of the prince of peace ...
In addition, the letter "Cost of War" by Abigail Fuller in the Sept. 21 Times-Union was enlightening. Abigail deserves much praise for thinking outside of the illegal occupation, death and destruction, total chaos, completely bankrupt box.

Daniels And IPALCO
Editor, Times-Union:For those who have been watching and listening to the recent IPALCO ads from the Kernan campaign, I wanted to offer a different perspective.
The Kernan campaign would lead voters to believe that Mitch Daniels, as an IPALCO board member, made the decision along with other board members to sell IPALCO to another company for the purpose of their own financial gain while disregarding the impact such a sell would have on IPALCO employees and other stockholders.
The facts of the case are quite different. Mitch Daniels and the rest of the IPALCO board voted to sell IPALCO to AES after receiving independent counsel that recommended the sale as the best option for all IPALCO stockholders. In addition, the IPALCO pension plan had no holdings in company stock, so while many stockholders, including IPALCO retirees suffered losses, no pension was affected by the drop in the price of stock that happened after the sale.
The Kernan campaign would lead voters to believe that by selling his stock "early," Mitch Daniels personally profited. What the Kernan campaign does not tell voters is that Mitch sold his stock holdings after being called upon by President Bush to serve as Director of Management and Budget to comply with federal ethics law. The Kernan campaign also fails to mention that Mitch donated all proceeds from the sale of his stock to a charitable foundation.
I encourage voters to visit www.mymanmitch.com to find out the truth about IPALCO, and more importantly to learn about Mitch Daniel's plans for health care, jobs, education and state government reform. Don't forget to register to vote!
