MDA Donations

Editor, Times-Union:
After reading the letter in last night's Times-Union (regarding MDA), I was very disappointed in our community!

All we could share with MDA was $2,446? How sad! My boyfriend and I pledge money every year for this cause. We are not rich in money, but feel very blessed in other areas of our lives. I cannot believe that every resident of Kosciusko could not give at least $1! Someday, one of your family members may be stricken with one of the MD diseases and I bet you will be first in line asking for help.

Editor, Times-Union:
To receive, suction, ingest, absorb, inhale, take in and ingurgitate are just a few of the many synonyms and interpretations of the word which I'm sure has caused all the controversy on Center Street. However, interpretation is the key factor here. If one wants to take a household word, that can commonly be read and heard in all walks of media, and decipher it as vulgar, that's in their own hands. I'm quite sure many people never gave the marquee at Pit Stop a second thought until its misinterpretation was pointed out, simply to cause a stir about town. Others might have read it as a facetious pun and had a fine chuckle while passing by. People of all walks of life must constantly face ideals which they oppose or are offended by everyday. Something that could be accepted by 90 percent of the populous might hurt the remaining 10 percent, but many are strong enough to stay true to their beliefs. Due to the "bandwagon" mentality which is likely to gain even more momentum, I foresee the sign changing soon. As intoxicatingly beautiful as the skyline of Center Street signs are, I offer this safety advice... pay less attention to business signs and more to the road you're driving on.

Then And Now

Editor, Times-Union:
That was then this is now!

I rode my motorcycle for the last time this week why I sold it anybody who knows me knows I always have a motorcycle. I drove to Creighton Brothers and notice Chris Elrods gravestone in the ground it brought back a lot of memories of the friends I have and lost. (THE GANG)

Where are you now? Some are probation officers and some are sherriff officers and production workers. Where are you now?

If you read this letter and know my name (DERRICK AVERY) then let's get together one more time for an end of summer get together! I can only find a hand full of friends but let's get the GANG together.

You ever listen to the Flash Back lunch? brings back memories doesn't it. One thing that sticks to my mind is Subway my best friend and I all summer would ride motorcycles all night and play in the boat all day. We didnt have a JOB but we always had some change, left in Mom's couch to buy a sub!

Well that was then and this is now. I have 2 kids, house payment and other family things going on, life is different now!

What are you up to? Because I know that was then this is now! If you want to get together

write or e-mail me so I can get the list of friends lost (THE GANG).

Bible Scorn

Editor, Times-Union:
It was with great interest that I read the letters in the Sept. 21 edition by Dennerick Flores and David Hoskins. It was grievous (for their sakes) that they so scornfully denied God and the Bible. The fact is that truth is truth whether men choose to believe it or not.

Their letters refer to God and the Bible in terms of petty, obsolete, invalid, antiquated, ludicrous and laughable. Christianity is not quite 2000 years old and Judaism is only about 3600 years old, but humanism goes back to the first sinner. All of the terms these men used to describe Christianity are more appropriately applied to humanism, paganism, the "New Age" movement, Eastern religions, and the Satanic and secret societies, all of which are older and more antiquated than everything except the hills. Men have been suffering war, pestilence, starvation, rape, torture, disease, mental illness and all sorts of other griefs for thousands of years as the price of believing that they could make everything better than God did.

When every man is a law unto himself and the truth is relative to every individual, then there can be no hope of anything but conflict. The only hope for true freedom, peace and rest is for all of mankind to obey God the way he created us to. One does not have to have his eyes open very wide to see the failures of humanism in history. Hitler, Marx, Stalin, Lenin, and a list of other madmen dating back thousands of years prove the fruits of humanism. The "-isms" have all failed repeatedly and have left a brutal trail of horror and injustice across the entire face of human history. Yet people still believe the solutions to life's problems are within themselves.

The concept of "freedom of ideas" was also mentioned. In most cases what is passed off as "free thought" is not "free" at all. It is usually the result of "bondage" to fleshly lusts. Satan has been recirculating the same lies for thousands of years. It is amazing that people who think that they are thinking new thoughts are really thinking ages-old ideas that have been tried and have failed billions of times.

If you want antiquated beliefs, stick with humanism. If you want joy, peace and eternal life, stick with God and the Bible. God has had it right from the beginning: mercy, forgiveness, faithfulness, kindness, loving God and loving others.

John 3:19-21 says, "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes to the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

God's grace through Jesus Christ is the only hope man has. This is not antiquated. This is truth that is alive and self-evident today. Come to the light.

Editor, Times-Union:
Warsaw Community High School is the largest high school in the conference, yet we don't have a football stadium with a track or soccer fields on the complex.

The football field at Lakeview will have over 50 games played on it in just over two months. The field starts out in good shape, but by the time the Pee Wee League, Middle School, Freshmen J/V and Varsity games are played, the field is slightly more than dirt. These field conditions are much more conducive to injuries.

The parking lot is overflowing and the stands are so packed that many people would rather stand along the fence than try to cram themselves into the bleachers.

Our soccer athletes have to take a bus or drive to their practices at the CCAC, thus losing 20 to 30 minutes of their day just getting there.

Most of their games start at 5 p.m. because no lights are available. This makes it difficult for some parents and many of the other athletes to support them.

The game fields at the CCAC are in good shape but the practice fields are little more than stubble. These fields also cause injuries that could be avoided.

Our track athletes don't have it much better. The majority of the team runs to Lakeview for practice and then runs back to the high school afterwards. The discus and shot athletes weight train at the high school and then drive to Lakeview.

How do they get back to the high school if the weather turns bad? How would we feel if someone was injured either running or driving to and from practice? It's an extra risk that can be avoided.

The high school provides one athletic trainer and several student trainers. They go many different directions, all at the same time. But when we have so many athletes at so many different places, can we give them the care he or she might need when they need it? What happens if someone at the CCAC or Lakeview needs help? If all our athletes were on high school grounds, the quality and speed with which they receive care would improve. Why are we putting our children at risk for the almighty dollar?

I don't want it to sound like academics don't matter, because they do. We hold our student athletes to higher standards than the general student body. Many of these young men and women are good students and must do well to even participate in extracurricular activities. They also learn how to work together to reach a common goal, how to compete in a positive way and develop a good work ethic. Couple these things with academics and we have given them the ground work that they can use to be successful adults. We have made available to them the best there is for academics. Why are we shortchanging select sports? The football, track and soccer athletes deserve better.
