Respect For Officers
Editor, Times-Union:A special thank-you to WPD Officer Light, KCS Officer Curtis and all the officers who assisted and I didn't catch their names. About 12:30 p.m. I looked out the window of my work to see my truck driving off. I followed on foot to get a description of the thieves while a friend phoned the police from a cell phone. Long story short by 1:45 p.m. I had been interviewed by Officer Light. Officer Curtis was waiting with my vehicle for me to pick it up. On my way to pick it up I saw at least three other officers looking for the thieves. It took great teamwork and communications between these two departments to make this happen. My respect for these men and the great job they do has increased tremendously. I fully believe our officers do "protect and serve."

Edgewood Scores
Editor, Times-Union:Edgewood Middle School reported some very exciting news at the school board meeting Monday evening. Unfortunately, our school report was not included in the follow up article on the school board meeting printed in the Times-Union Tuesday, September 21. Therefore, as principal of Edgewood Middle School, I would like to share the good news with the public.
Edgewood Middle School had the highest math scores in the Northern Lakes Conference on ISTEP+ for the 2003-2004 school year. Edgewood Middle School had the highest math scores of all middle schools in this Indiana region. When compared to this group we even had the highest percentage of students who earned the high distinction of Pass + for the math ISTEP+. Compared to 25 middle schools in the area, we shared with the board that Edgewood Middle School did the best!
When compared to all students throughout the state taking Algebra I, Edgewood has 42 percent of our student body taking this course. The state average in eighth grade at any Indiana school is 12.5 percent. When all these students took the Core 40 state mandated assessment for Algebra I, 46 percent of Edgewood students scored in the top 10 percent of the state! 72 percent were in the top 25 percent. 93 percent were in the top 50 percent!
This year even more students are stepping up to the challenge of taking higher level math courses while in middle school. They are meeting the challenge and they are excelling!
We (teachers, students and administrators) tried to share examples of excellence in education at Edgewood Middle School at the school board meeting. We also shared examples of excellence in science and art, in addition to math. We are so proud of our school, our staff and most importantly our students. Thank you for providing the forum of letters to the editor so the public can hear about the good things happening in our schools!

Iraq Quagmire
Editor, Times-Union:Wake up my friends! The war in Iraq (not a necessary war) is in a quagmire. Think about it; we have lost 1,070-plus soldiers, not including those who died in transit and all the soldiers who are maimed, missing arms and legs and blinded etc. Bush didn't want the coffins to be photographed because he didn't want the American people to see what he had done! And think about the innocent Iraqi men, women and children maimed and killed! "Shock and awe" said Rumsfield gleefully. What about Osama bin Laden? Remember him? We don't hear about him or the war in Afghanistan and the soldiers there! After 9/11, we should have gone after him, but no. We went into Iraq and now the terrorist from other countries are pouring in and we are not safer! and Bush stands there with the smirk! God knows what the deficit will be when you get done! And I am saying "you" because you are either with the Bush administration or against them! You decide!

Kerry Quote
Editor, Times-Union:We received this from a niece in Houston, and we thought the Times-Union readers would be interested in reading it. I guess scarey-Kerry doesn't want any of us around if he gets elected.
I find this quote disturbing and probably more on target to the true John Kerry than anything we hear.
Think about what he is saying, especially the last line.
"This moment in Simi Valley is a moment of truth," Kerry said. "Not just for my campaign, but for the future of my party as well. For some of us, this may be our only chance to confirm the demise of the man who is solely responsible for turning the American people away from liberal philosophy. As Democrats, we need to put small differences aside and be certain that this man is truly gone. Next, we must reclaim our country from the church-goers, the middle America folks and the uneducated conservative masses."

Editor's Note: The quote the letter writer refers is urban legend, passed around on the Internet. Consider the following excerpt from snopes.com, a noted truth-detecting Web site.
"After the passing of President Ronald Reagan in June, Senator John Kerry cancelled scheduled campaign events and suspended his campaign activities for a week as a display of respect for the former president. Kerry also made a visit to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., to pay his respects as President Reagan's body lay in repose at the presidential library, and the Senator attended the state funeral held for the former president a few days later at Washington's National Cathedral.
"The words quoted above were never spoken by Kerry; they're an e-mailed excerpt taken from a spoof news article 'Kerry Endures Heat and Low-Life Scum to Make Sure Reagan is Really Dead' published on kerrycore.com, a John Kerry parody site.
"What the press reported Kerry actually said at the time he visited the Reagan Library was:
" 'I didn't agree with a lot of the things he was doing, obviously,' Kerry said of Reagan, whom he called a 'very likable guy.' But he added that he got along well with the Republican, was able to work with him and visited the White House a number of times during his two terms."

Editor, Times-Union:I wanted to share our thanks to the Koscuisko Literacy Services for providing books to the elementary schools here in Warsaw. KLS has a great tradition in working with county schools. This group does great things in our community to promote literacy and learning through the hospital, schools, adult education and community business.
Thank you.
