Dog Tag Clarification

Editor, Times-Union:
As a life member of the Howard County Vietnam Veterans' Organization, who just celebrated our 20th consecutive annual reunion, I would like to thank you for the coverage of the presentation of a long-lost dogtag to the son and daughter of Sgt. Dennis Fairchild. Wendy and Troy Fairchild were very touched.

However, for whatever the reason, the story contained a few inaccuracies that really need to be corrected. Bob and Ann McMahon of Hancock, N.H., are the people who take Viet vets back to 'the nam' on healing and closure trips and was the one who was responsible for returning with over 1,100 American dogtags in late 2001.

Tom Clark, a history teacher in Lake Station, Ind., has been researching KIA Indiana veterans for the past 17 years, with the voluntary help of past and present students and is the official researcher and archiver for the state of Indiana. Tom is the one who made the presentation after verifying that the dog tag was in fact authentic.

Tom Clark did in fact present the dogtag to Wendy and Troy following a great introduction by Sammy Davis, Indiana's only living Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

The reason I can make these corrections is that I was orginally contacted in November 2001 by Bob McMahon concerning the dogtag and once Tom Clark had verified its authencity, contacted Wendy and then talked to the HCVVO reunion committee and they took it from there, working out the details for the presentation ceremony.

Please understand that in NO way am I looking for any kind of credit, nor do I want to belittle a great article concerning this fantastic organization and the very emotional ceremony, but only want to make sure that credit is given where credit is due.

And even though he tried very hard to avoid any public recognition, Bob, with his wonderful wife Ann, flew in from New Hampshire to observe the presentation ceremony.

Bob, Ann, Tom and his students are to be commended for their untiring efforts on behalf of the families of Vietnam veterans who paid the ultimate price in defense of their country in an unpopular and expensive war.

Editor, Times-Union:
The faculty and staff at Edgewood Middle School have been working over the past year and a half to improve the behavior of our students. We have developed a comprehensive plan for addressing student behavior issues including an incentive plan for good behavior. Students who are "caught" exhibiting good behaviors are provided a positive behavior ticket, which can be turned in for a daily drawing. Local businesses and families have contributed numerous items for the rewards that are designed to reinforce positive student behaviors. The Edgewood staff and administration wish to thank the following individuals and organizations that have already contributed at this time: Pizza Hut, Applebee's, Arbys, Burger King, Taco Bell, Edgewood Athletic Department, Warsaw Athletic Department, Maple Avenue Florist, Dennie House, Wal-Mart, Anderson's Greenhouse, Courthouse Coffee, Reinholt's Town Square Furniture, Reader's World, Boat House Restaurant, Lucas Realty, Renecker's Sport Shop, Pizza King, Bogg's Automotive, Walmer family, Miclot family, Dawson family, R.R. Donnelley and Sons, Dr. Michael Thompson, Dr. Steve Hollar, Owens Supermarkets, Maurices, Ramada Inn, Winning Edge Sports.

Thank you!

Don't Criticize

Editor, Times Union:
This is in response to Bridget Baldwin's letter regarding Dalton's and Charlie Smith.

You should know a person before you start making assumptions and accusations toward that person, especially in the media.

Charlie Smith was not one of the men that shut down the race track, so you lost that bet! Why do you assume Charlie hasn't thought about the men and women overseas fighting for our freedom? I saw him at the 9/11 patriotic program at the high school on Sept. 5, which honored several groups of people including past and present men and women of the armed forces. Were you in attendance?

Could it be that Charlie isn't whining, but just concerned about our environment? We recycle and are very concerned about future generations and what kind of environment they will be forced to live in.

I'm not against Dalton's or any of the employees who work there. My father worked there in the early '50s. I respect the men and women who work hard to provide for their families, no matter where they are employed. But shouldn't companies be held accountable and adhere to the rules and regulations regarding pollution control, environmental concerns and safety?

In closing, don't criticize or judge someone you don't know. If you personally like the dirt as you stated, then I'm wondering why aren't you living closer to the dirt?
