KABS Concerns
Editor, Times Union:I would like to thank everyone who has voiced their concerns in regards to KABS. Your comments definitely have an impact. I believe the public deserves an explanation on what has happened and is happening. Due to some confusion, there was not a KABS representative at the commissioners meeting. Voting not to spend tax dollars without adequate information, and making sure every reasonable cut has been made, does not mean I am against KABS. To further complicate the issue, this has the potential of becoming an annual request. Other groups are also facing state and federal funding cuts, this decision will set a precedent for future requests. Tom Sherron with KABS has always worked well with the commissioners, and we will continue to work together to ensure the future of transportation for both seniors and handicapped people. This does not necessarily mean county funding, we must look at ways to stretch the dollars KABS currently has. Be assured that I am not in favor of eliminating transportation for seniors or handicapped people. I am in favor of making sure we get the most out of our tax dollars.

Editor, Times-Union:Something happened within my household early Wednesday morning that made me appreciate how efficient and caring our county sheriff's department dispatcher, Diana Roberts, is.
I was awakened at 12:30 a.m. with a call from her saying that she had received a 911 "hang-up" call from my residence. She just wanted to make sure everything was all right. She then asked me to check on my children and make sure they were all right. I was sure that she was mistaken and ready to go back to sleep immediately, but she was not going let me get away without checking on my children. Everything was fine and she then told me that sometimes when cordless telephone batteries run down, they automatically call 911 for some reason, which must have been the case (or the only explanation I can find).
When I hear of dispatchers in other cities that are rude or do not answer 911 calls right away or just don't care - it makes me feel much better to know that Diana is working in my county.
