Roemer Residency

Editor, Times-Union:
I have really enjoyed the letters from Chris Chocola's friends in South Bend regarding Tim Roemer. Unfortunately, those letters more appropriately belong in the fiction section of a magazine.

Tim Roemer and his family have a home in Washington. Not only is Tim expected to be in Washington during the week when the House is in session, but also attend various committee meetings and follow-up on other constituent business during the work week. His constituents also expect to see him at various important activities on the weekends. If his children lived in the district while he was in Congress, they would undoubtedly see less of him than they do now, as I know he and Sally work very hard to make time for their children in the evenings during the week. Instead of merely reciting the phrase "family values" mindlessly, Tim truly does value his family.

Elected officials with children at home always have tough decisions to make regarding where their children live. For example, I am sure the Quayles found it to be a tough decision to move their children to Washington and educate them there, but they did, and I do not think any elected official, Republican or Democrat, should be attacked as Tim Roemer has been for wanting to spend time with his family.

Mr. Chocola has decided that criticizing Congressman Roemer for having a home in Washington is the way to win this election. But telling the voters that Tim Roemer doesn't live in the Third District is simply false. Perhaps corporate attorneys like Mr. Chocola are used to stretching the truth a little bit in negotiations, but here in Kosciusko County we prefer the kind of straight talk and honest answers that Congressman Roemer has given us for the last 10 years. Maybe Tim Roemer cannot be in Indiana and at Washington at the same time, but he has always been where the voters of the Third District have needed him, and after all, isn't that why we elect a congressman in the first place?

For the average lifetime, Warsaw has had one newspaper. It claims to be nonpartisan, but look at the editorial page and political cartoon. It is Republican. So, most local offices have been determined in the Republican primary and habits formed.

Now we face an important presidential election. From Reagan through Bush, the Federal deficit quintupled. In the past 7-1/2 years of Democratic presidency, that deficit has been reduced greatly with a possible zero balance in 20 years, but it can't happen if tax relief is legislated for those who need it the least, being the most wealthy. The Republican Congress just voted to eliminate the Inheritance Tax on "all" estates. But 98 percent of estates already pay no inheritance tax, so this "relief" is only for the 2 percent of taxpayers who are the wealthiest. This was vetoed. Malcolm Forbes (very rich) proposes a flat tax with everyone paying the same rate. This would fall short of the government's needs. Forbes has the answer. A value added charge (really a tax) on everything at the wholesale level, which would then be part of the higher retail price, which we ALL PAY, and subject to sales tax needed by the states. This will hurt funding of churches and charities because our identifiable deductions drop and living costs go up.

As to the qualifications of the candidates, a quote from Time Magazine, Sept. 11 issue, "In a battle over substance, the guy with 24 years experience has the edge over the one with five."

Editor, Times-Union:
THANK YOU to whomever returned my wallet Saturday morning.

I did a dumb thing, put the wallet on the back of the car, nicely changed our stray cats' water and promptly drove off to do some errands.

At about the Center and Detroit intersection, I realized my error and back-tracked, looking, searching, walking, etc. Nothing. Finally, upon going to the police station, not more than an hour later, Officer Light informed me that the wallet was RETURNED and that he had ALREADY TAKEN it to our home!

There is some very honest, decent, kind person out there who deserves a lot of thanks. It certainly makes one grateful.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Right To Bear Arms

Editor, Times-Union:
Who will you trust to protect your right to keep and bear arms for the next four years? Al Gore? Not likely! He will steal your Second Amendment guarantee so fast it will make your head spin. George W. Bush? Who knows! He will check the polls and go with whatever is popular at the time. Harry Browne, Libertarian candidate for president? Absolutely! The whole Libertarian philosophy is based on governing by the Constitution, as well it should be.
