Tough Season
Editor, Times-Union:It certainly has been a tough season for those of us who follow the football Tigers. As a former coach I can feel the pain and hurt of both the coaching staff and the players. It just doesn't seem like I'm doing enough by sitting in the stands and cheering. I'd rather be down on the field encouraging and giving slaps on the back.
There is much to be said about the role of the fans though. You often hear of the "twelfth man." That's us! We are part of the team! As a member of the team we have to do our part. That means we not only have to cheer when things are going well but also in the tough times. We did a great job of supporting our team at the Northridge game. We had a good following, and for the most part, everyone was supportive. When it was 9-0 we kept cheering. When we got further behind we tended to grow quieter. We need to realize that that is when the team needs us the most. It is hard for me to imagine that every player out there isn't giving his best on every play. We need to do the same.
It was exhilarating to hear the Penn State band perform. Everyone stood and cheered to show their appreciation for kids they didn't even know. Unfortunately, later in the game, we couldn't do the same for our team. Those are our kids out there! They certainly deserve our backing as much as a band of kids we don't know.
I hope you all will be there to support our team for homecoming. I'm sure they will be ready to play, and they will play even harder when they hear the "twelfth man" supporting them. At times it may be necessary for some "old cheerleaders" to start the action. It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as we cheer. In fact I have an idea. When the team comes out after halftime they spell T-I-G-E-R-S as they do their jumping jacks. We could show that we are with them if we spelled along. We will have to pay attention to when they start, but we can do that. What do you say?
Let's all come out Friday night ready to cheer. Most importantly, ready to show our kids that we are behind them. As my mom used to say "Don't make me have to come up there"......and make you cheer.
