Telethon Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:I knew we could count on the wonderful folks of Warsaw! Thank you for helping the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon raise a record $54,610,289 in pledges and contributions.
Hundreds of celebrities and nearly a million volunteers worked Labor Day weekend to help "my kids." Yet all our hats are off to you Warsaw residents for phoning in pledges to the Telethon on Fox-28, WSJV, for supporting the firefighter "Fill-the Boot" drives and other local MDA events. Your caring gives tremendous support to children and adults in Indiana and to families across the country.
Thanks to you, MDA maintains 230 clinics, including the Elkhart Clinic. These havens of help are staffed by top medical experts dedicated to giving life-enhancing care to people challenged by muscle-wasting diseases.
Thanks to you, MDA will continue to accelerate worldwide research seeking treatments and cures for devastating neuromuscular disorders which affect people of all ages, both sexes and every nationality. You'll be interested to know that the breakthroughs being pioneered by MDA investigators may also soon lead to therapies for heart disease, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's and cystic fibrosis.
For more information or to get involved, call your area MDA office at 259-9912, MDA national headquarters at 800-572-1717 or visit www.mdausa.org

Damaged Fence
Editor, Times-Union:On August 23, I was advised by the town marshal of Pierceton that I should contact the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department concerning an accident at Hillcrest Cemetery at the corner of 350S and Ind. 13, about 1/2 mile south of Pierceton, which happened a day or so before.
An automobile had driven through the fence, hit a monument, pushing it about 20 feet from its foundation.
The marshal told me that the sheriff's department had investigated the accident and that the driver had been taken to the hospital. I waited a couple of days for a copy of the report, which I assumed would be given to me, because usually each party involved in an auto accident gets a copy of the police report.
On Friday, Aug. 25, I went to the sheriff's department to get the information. I was told that I would need to know the date of the accident and the address. I told her I didn't know the date, but that it just happened a few days before. The cemetery has no address, but it is located at the intersection of Ind. 13 and 350S. This information wasn't good enough.
I left in haste and disgust knowing the my township, Washington, would have to repair the fence again at its own cost.

Voting For Congress
Editor, Times-Union:Yes, it's that time again. The time when we go to the voting booth and pick who will represent us in that crazy hive of Congresscritters known as Capitol Hill.
Excuse me for sounding a little skeptical, but who wouldn't, when our current representative to the House doesn't even live in this district and neither does his family? I speak, of course, of Rep. Tim Roemer.
Yes, here's the man who is supposed to be one of us - someone who lives here, is in touch with the people and is looking out for our best interests. If you think he is doing that job well, then I have a few questions for you.
Why do the Roemers not even live here? They live in Great Falls, Va. Congress was out of session 226 days last year, but Tim Roemer only spent 44 of those days here, to reacquaint himself with the people who elected him, I guess.
Why has Indiana Right to Life picked Chris Chocola, the man running against Rep. Roemer, as the one who best represents the pro-life view, and who I believe best represents the view of this district? Is it because Mr. Roemer has voted on both sides of the issue?
Why was Rep. Roemer categorized as a "big spender," earning him an "F" in rating by the National Taxpayers Union, awarded the Enemy of the Taxpayer Award from Americans for Tax Reform and given an "unfriendly to taxpayers" rating from Citizens Against Government Waste, all of whom are nonpartisan watchdog groups monitoring the spending habits of our Congresscritters?
Mr. Roemer likes to say he never voted to raise taxes. The truthfulness of that claim is being hidden behind "political games." And besides, you can "never vote to raise taxes" and still try to spend money like it's going out of style, which is why he got those ratings above.
I think the supporters of Rep. Roemer will have a hard time looking you in the eye this time and saying that he really represents the citizens of the Third District. Let's vote for Chris Chocola, a man who lives here, whose family lives here, who has taken a pledge to not raise taxes and who will do a much better job of representing the people of the Third District.

Gun Control
Editor, Times-Union:Dear Sen. Bayh, Sen. Lugar and Rep. Buyer,
I've written to you many times in the past and now feel compelled once again to make my voting voice be heard. I am a freedom loving Hoosier who deeply believes that education is a far better solution to violence than governmental regulation. This administration's pathetic attempts to slide "gun control" bills past the American public in the name of "crime control" are simply disgusting, insulting and infuriating. Anyone with a shred of common sense can study situations and statistics across the country and around the world to see that any time the public is armed and educated violent crime is reduced and anywhere that all-out gun control is enacted violent crime raises exponentially. The national media spin of this generation has such a jaded perception of reality that the next generation will be hard pressed to realize the importance of the freedoms hard-working and patriotic Americans have fought, bled and died for.
Bills such as S-2099, S-2525 or HR-4205, and some of their provisions, simply prove the point that some politicians believe our hard-earned inalienable rights as free Americans are for sale or simply up for grabs. These underhanded, back door attempts to make subjects out of law-abiding American citizens have got to be brought into the light of day for all to see and must be stopped.
If it weren't for patriotic groups such as GOA and the NRA there would even be fewer of us aware of the chicanery going on in Washington, D.C., by the very people we freedom-loving Americans voted into power. Those of us who love freedom and intend to maintain it are closely watching these types of activities. Please let your voting record show that you understand the heartfelt opinions of the conservative Americans and Hoosiers who voted you into your position and are paying your salaries.
Once again, these liberty-stealing efforts must be stopped. I implore you to vote against any such efforts and show the world that Hoosiers aren't ignorant sheep waiting to be led into bondage.

Thanks To KCH
Editor, Times-Union:Recently I had surgery at KCH and wanted to take some time to thank many wonderful people who helped me get through the testing before and the surgery plus my recuperation. I certainly don't want to leave anyone out, there were so many great people involved.
Before my surgery, I underwent a series of testing, some of which was uncomfortable to say the least, and the people at KCH were caring and worked to make it as comfortable as they could. Also, the people at registration and radiology were super.
I especially want to thank Dr. Cook, Dr. Howard and their staffs for being reassuring and very helpful. Dr. Brinkman and especially Melissa for helping me through some rough times after surgery. And Dr. Van Ness, who, as he put it, "joined the party late." What a great face to see after surgery. And of course, my hometown family doctor, Dr. Silveus, who diagnosed the problem first and saw me through the testing and referrals, and the friendly helpful staff in his office who were always willing to encourage and support me.
The staff on the KCH surgical floor were top notch - nurses, my Valley Girls who were my aides, each one helpful and informative. I made two trips to the emergency room after surgery and I have a newfound appreciation for the work the E.R. staff does. Frankly, it was a zoo the second night, but everyone was taken care of and I went home with what I needed to get me through.
Last but not least, I want to thank the many people who sent flowers, balloons, cards, food, phone calls and many acts of kindness. To my WRSW family, especially Roger and Jeremy, thanks. I love you all, you are my family and you make my day.
I am on the mend and feeling stronger every day. Little setbacks in life make you appreciate what has been given to you. I know why I love to live here ... because the people I live with are the greatest.

Gas Prices
Editor, Times-Union:I was reading an article in your paper tonight about Europeans and high gas prices. It described what the Europeans were doing in relation to the high prices. It also stated the U.S. drivers looked silly for complaining about $1.54. Silly?! No, we aren't going to be stupid enough to wait till gas gets to $4.30 to start hollering about it. ... We not only get it at the pump, we get it in everything we do. Surcharges are popping up all over for us, the consumer, to pay for the high gas prices. Airlines, utilities, store prices, etc., all are adding fuel surcharges. Maybe we should take a page out of the Europeans book and start using some of their tactics over here. ...
