Benefit Concert

Editor, Times-Union:
On Sunday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at Full Gospel Tabernacle, North Main Street, Claypool, there will be a gospel concert in honor of Brenda Evans. Singers will be Ron and Sharon Frazier, Mark Harvey of River City Ministries and the Dotsons of the Claypool church.

Brenda passed away April 16, 2002, from complications caused by kidney failure.

Brenda would have been 39 years old on Aug. 28 of this year. From the age of 15 until her death, she struggled with kidney problems.

Brenda had three kidney transplants, of which the first and third were partially successful, the first for 6-1/2 years, the third for seven years. Her body totally rejected the second transplant.

Brenda had numerous operations in her short lifetime. One thing for sure, she was a brave young lady.

My wife Aggie Dotson also passed away, Jan. 25, 1999, from the complications of diabetes including kidney failure.

One incident I remember when they were both in the Lutheran Hospital, Brenda requested to be put in the same room with Aggie, which the hospital staff agreed to do.

A freewill offering will be taken; 100 percent of the proceeds from this concert will go for funeral expenses. Come be with us on this day; let us as a caring community show our love and respect for Brenda.

Stirring Remembrance

Editor, Times-Union:
Last night Warsaw and Kosciusko County were blessed with an opportunity to honor our own emergency personnel and remember that horrifying day a year ago. The Grace Brethren Church of Winona Lake was the body that put this assembly together. The speaker for the evening was Sujo John, whose story of escape from the World Trade Center was both electrifying and chilling. The choir from Grace Brethren, the choir from Wawasee High School, the band from Warsaw High School and the members of the community that spoke made certain that the healing has begun but the moment will never be forgotten.

Thank you to the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, the Warsaw H.S. staff (especially the principal), the choirs and the band. But most of all a big thank you to the folks who were honored last night who faithfully guard our communities in Kosciusko County.

We will remember to never forget.

Community Outreach

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing this short letter from our family in an attempt to express the deep gratitude in our hearts. We hardly know how to begin, as words seem so inadequate.

A few weeks ago the Laketon/Manchester community hosted a benefit day for our family to help support us through the time of our baby's hospitalization with leukemia. The response was enormous! We feel overwhelmed, grateful and humbled at this community's outreach of love, support, hard work, donations, prayers ... the list seems to run on and on. A heartfelt thank-you to each and every being who has contributed and supported. God has been so good to us. Everyone's kindness has helped to sustain us through this rocky and uncertain pathway we are traveling with our little girl.

Kimberly is currently in the last step of her treatment. She had her bone marrow transplant on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Her 10-year-old brother, Kyle, is her donor. He is a full 6/6 match. We are blessed to have a match, as it is her only medical hope for a cure from her disease. We ask that you all continue to hold her up in prayer for we know that "with God all things are possible."

Peer Pressure

Editor, Times-Union:
I just got off the telephone with some friends and I found out some very disturbing news about a little girl in her last year of grade school, here in Warsaw, that tried out for volleyball. All the girls were picked but her ... now doesn't that make you think about all the peer pressure that is going on with our young people that this is helping a situation along? What is it with some of these teachers and/or coaches anyway! I hope that this situation gets resolved for that little girl's sake. My children are all grown and they have children but I never had that problem when they were in school. To tell you the truth, I never heard about peer pressure until a few years ago. Let alone a teacher and/or a coach helping it along!

Just needed to sound off here, but I am going to make it my business to find out what the problem is and if anyone wants to know anymore information on this, I will gladly give them what I have received. Thank you for your time.

Warsaw MDA Support

Editor, Times-Union:
I'm sending a huge "thanks" to Warsaw for its generous support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Labor Day weekend! Because of your help, our MDA Telethon raised a record $58,276,118 in contributions and pledges.

It was heartwarming to see people across the country - from celebrities to unsung heroes - coming together to help families affected by neuromuscular diseases. As our nation marks the first anniversary of Sept. 11, it's clear that we remain true to our most cherished values.

I want to thank you not only for calling in pledges to the Telethon broadcast on WSJV, Channel 28, but for supporting MDA programs throughout the year, including Shamrocks Against Dystrophy sales, MDA Lock-Ups and Fill-the-Boot drives by firefighters.

Your support makes it possible for MDA to keep the engines running at full speed on worldwide research seeking treatments and cures. We've made so many significant gains in recent years! Besides research, your donations fund other vital programs, including some 230 clinics, help with medical equipment and - the favorite of "my kids" - summer camp.

If you'd like to get involved with these great MDA programs year-round, call your local MDA office; call our national headquarters at 800-572-1717; or visit our Web site at www.mdausa.org

Warsaw, you're the best! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
