Football Injuries

Editor, Times-Union:
On Sept. 2nd of this year, our sons were injured during a freshman football game at Tippy Valley and unfortunately their injuries were deemed serious enough that they were transported via ambulance to KCH in Warsaw. The decision was made at KCH to airlift both boys to Fort Wayne for further evaluation of their injuries. One boy was transported to Parkview, the other, at his parents' request, was transported to Lutheran.

Fortunately, both boys, after extensive examinations, were released the next day to return to their respective homes. Although the doctors at both hospitals have restricted their activities for the next couple of weeks, both boys are expected to recover fully.

We, the parents, at this time would like to express our gratitude to the Whitko coaching staff, Whitko faculty and an untold number of parents and friends who came to the emergency room at KCH to be with us, sharing our concern and giving us much needed support at that very trying time.

We would also like to thank all the personnel in the emergency room at KCH for their professional yet caring attitudes while tending to our sons. It was comfort to us to observe their actions while keeping us informed as to our son's condition and what their course of treatment would be.

We also would like to express our appreciation to the members of the Whitko faculty and coaching staff who traveled to both hospitals in Fort Wayne to check on the condition of our sons and to offer support to us, not leaving either hospital until they were satisfied that our sons' conditions were stable.

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn't thank the air crews and the staffs of both hospitals in Fort Wayne.

It is a comforting feeling to have parents, friends, faculty and coaching staff gather to give us support at a time when it was sorely needed.

Christian Democrat

Editor, Times-Union:
This is in response to Michael A. Helton's letter "You Cannot Vote Democrat and Be a Christian."

I don't really have time to waste on this, so I'll move right to the part in your letter that made me laugh the hardest, and shoot that down. OK?

You say "The Democratic party supports homosexuality." I say the Democratic party supports equal rights for all, even those that are daily discriminated against and treated like they are sub-human. Which, by the way, they're not. They're people ... like you. They have feelings, morals, goals, talents and great ideas, too. Shocking, isn't it?

You say, "The Democratic party supports the removal of God from schools, government buildings, etc." I say the Democratic party supports the right to believe what you want to believe, and not have a particular religion shoved down your throat. God doesn't want blind followers. He wants true believers. Belief is a personal experience ... it doesn't come from bullying or brainwashing.

And if you're not a fan of the ACLU ... you'd better let them know that right now so they can stop wasting their time trying to protect you from privacy invasions like the Patriot Act.

I can't find a single dictionary here in the computer lab I'm currently in, but I DID manage to find some synonyms for the word "conservative" online, if you're interested ... conformist, old-fashioned and unadventurous were the ones that stood out to me the most. Hmmm ... being liberal sounds a bit more appetizing to me. And to be completely honest, the Jesus I believe in was liberal himself. He sought out the lowest of the low and he befriended them. He stood up for the downtrodden. He lived a life of joy and good news, not fear of doing something wrong. Sounds like a class-A hippie to me.

You say the nation is headed for another "Sodom and Gomorrah ..." but, like most, you see the biblical story in a sense only of condemning homosexuality. When you get right down to it, Mr. Helton, the story is much more heavy in its condemnation of inhospitality. How hospitable was your letter to the editor?

And just to answer one more of your thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating hypothetical questions ... "Who would vote for a Democrat?" The answer is me.

Get Off My Path

Editor, Times-Union:
Concerning Mr. Helton's letter, "The Politics of Religion":

I was overjoyed, Mr. Helton, to read your wonderful letter to the editor on the first of September. Finally someone had the guts to speak up for the majority. I couldn't help but smile when you so eloquently put all of the African-Americans, Latino Americans, homosexuals, non-Christians and numerous other minorities in their proper place; which is, of course, somewhere below our rightful place as middle class white protestants. For so many years, I've felt as if I was of a privileged class; a class by far superior to, not only anyone who does not attend church regularly, but anyone whose belief system is dissimilar to my own. It's true; God only knows who would vote for a Democrat.

These last few years, with both a Republican president and Senate have been incredibly trying for all Republicans, everywhere.

I could have never so eloquently expressed the slanderous generalizations of minority groups and leaders as you did in those few paragraphs. You have reassured me that the downtrodden must remain downtrodden, not just for the party's sake, but for the sake of our religion. Put sinners in their place and let those of us without sin cast the first Republican vote, is what I say. Keep running the good race, Mr. Helton, and push anyone who doesn't look or think like you off the path. They, of course, don't belong there.

Contractor Praised

Editor, Times-Union:
This is the first time that we have ever sent a letter to the editor but I just wanted to shout out a little praise to the company that just built our house. You are all the time hearing bad things about builders and construction companies, well we would like to give a little good news about them.

Through all of our friends and family we were warned several times about building a house due to all of the experiences they have gone through. They said that the price is never right, the builder ignored me, everything was not how I wanted it, etc. Well, we just closed on our house this past Friday and we could not be happier.

Matt Coffel with Coffel Construction was our builder. His company and crew were amazing. He let us be as involved as we wanted but yet gave us the room to step back and trust him with the building of our very first home. Every time that we thought we needed to call, we did and he had already taken care of it or it was coming. He did several things for us that were not in the original quote just as a service. His office manager Jenny was always on top of things and was always so wonderful to talk to. We never had one bad moment with them. They got to know us as people and not just another client that they would soon be done with in a few months. The office manager knew that I loved shoes and went as far as to send me a bracelet in the mail just because she was thinking about me one day as she was out. We did not know Matt & Jenny beforehand and now we consider them friends. As my husband and I were driving home from our closing, I said, "Would you have Matt build us another house?" And without hesitation he said, "I would not have anyone else do it".

If you get a chance, swing by the Parade of Homes this next week and check out the homes that they have on display there - you will not be sorry!

Thank you, Coffel Construction, for making this building experience a pleasure.
