Replace Souder
Editor, Times-Union:I am convinced that we in Indiana's 3rd Congressional District deserve to be represented by someone other than Mark Souder, and in November we will have the opportunity to vote for an excellent replacement.
Tom Hayhurst is well qualified to be that replacement. Twelve years ago Mark Souder told us that he believed in "term limits" and that no one should serve in the House of Representatives for more than six consecutive two-year terms. Now he is asking us to elect him to a seventh term. I am not advocating term limits, but I am saying that 12 years has been long enough for Mr. Souder to represent us.
Tom Hayhurst not only has the respect of the medical community of Fort Wayne (he is a retired physician), he also has a fine record of service on the Fort Wayne City Council, which political experience would be valuable as our representative.
A few of Mr. Hayhurst's concerns are: Creating and keeping good jobs in northeast Indiana, affordable health care, a healthy environment, our nation's security, fair treatment for our veterans and challenges facing working families. In his word: "It's time for Congress to focus on what really matters."
I'm not sure how Tom Hayhurst would have voted, had he been a congressman when we invaded Iraq, how he now feels about the time to bring troops home and how he views our exploding national deficit. I am confident that he would have used good judgement as a congressman.
It is my firm belief that it's high time to turn things around in Washington and a good place to start is to elect Tom Hayhurst to represent Indiana's third district.

Johnson
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in concern to the story "Johnson Enters Plea In Sexual Misconduct."
When are we ever going to be on the kids' side when something like this happens? This child's life has been effected forever, not for six years that Mark Johnson may or may not get.
Come on, wake up, why should he get a plea agreement? This boy will suffer from Johnson's wrong-doing all of his life. Johnson should at least have to pay for counseling for this child.
He molested this child, why should that be dropped? And there may be others that haven't come forward.
Judge Reed, please consider the effects that this will have on the child before making your final deletion.

Prankster
Editor, Times-Union:Since I do not know the individual(s) who came into our lives at 10 'til 11 Sunday night, I thought this would be the only way to contact them.
I just wanted to give them a heartless "thank you" for what they did. Somehow, some way, they managed to have the perfect aim to hit our last pole on our porch that was recently done earlier this spring with an egg. Yes, you read right - an egg. I can only imagine that the weather of "fall" perhaps provoke this "attack" and inspired Halloween pranks from them.
For when they hit the pole, not only did you startled the adults, but scared our 3-1/2-year-old daughter. She held my hand as she went to sleep that night. All the while asking why someone wanted to throw an egg at our house. So, perhaps, if they think about, they may want to stop by our house sometime and explain to, not only our child, but to us as to why?
So beware everyone - it appears the fall pranksters have only just begun!

Rudeness
Editor, Times-Union:I wrote a letter to the editor some time ago and Jason Spangle wrote that I was wrong and shouldn't be "spouting off in the public arena."
Jason seems to have all the numbers, facts and answers, but I disagree with him. I wonder if he thinks everyone that writes a letter to the editor is "mouthing off" and "spouting off in the public arena" or was it just me? If he read the letter "Church and State" by Michael Stinfer, I'm quite sure in Jason's opinion, Michael was "spouting and mouthing off." I may not be able to quote numbers and state all the facts, but I do know how to disagree without being rude.

No To Ethanol Plant
Editor, Times-Union:We are concerned parents and citizens of Milford about the refinery/ethanol plant proposed in Milford.
We have two children with respiratory problems which would greatly reduce their quality of life if this refinery comes to Milford. Our youngest has seizures from a low immune system and has done much better and is getting healthier through a natural diet, which also includes having clean air to breathe. She is only 3 years old and her body rejects even the smell of a fast food restaurant's air by having mini-seizures within 48 hours of the allergic inhalant in the air. We, as parents, have to protect our children. We are pleading that the refinery will not come near Milford to save our children's quality of life.
Our businesses will suffer as well, especially the golf course in Milford. The choice is clear air for everyone to enjoy and breathe. Don't get caught up in the so-called new technology age. If the corporations that build these refineries cannot keep up the old refineries, what will happen to the new refineries that become old? Remember the biofuel refineries have no liability if someone becomes sick from it. That has to tell you something right there.
Our quality of life as a family and as a community will be greatly reduced if not destroyed by the refinery's odor/air quality, noise, lighting, housing values, safety and - but not limited to - traffic. As Pat Hurd said, this refinery will not benefit Milford, which means it will not benefit you or me. Let us choose life instead of being used for someone else's benefit.
To help our community find out more answers to help our government officials get the facts instead of one-sided information, please come to the Milford Town Meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the Milford Town Hall. Let us show the county that Milford is a strong community that is united and stands together. As Edmund Burke said, "No one made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little."
Together, we can make a difference!
