Alaska Trip
Editor, Times-Union:I recently visited Alaska to study glaciers. The purpose of my trip was professional development. I expect to use the knowledge I gained in several courses I teach at an area college. The trip was expensive; I cut costs by staying at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. I enjoyed the privilege of visiting the Kenai Peninsula, informative boat cruises, viewing the amazing wildlife and hiking the Matanuska glacier.
I did not, however, do any fishing, kayaking nor stay in any luxury hotel - such at the Captain Cook (although I did stick my head in the door to see the lobby). I was able to make this amazing trip because I wrote a proposal for a special National Science Foundation program. If I had not been accepted to the program and received additional funding from my institution and other support from individuals, I could not have afforded the trip.
Imagine my surprise when I read an article in the Indianapolis Star telling about the planned trip by our state legislators to the same area I believed (because of the expense) I would never have the privilege to see.
I just question why, at this time of financial crisis in the state of Indiana, or at any time for that matter, our legislators (44 of them to be exact), are making a trip such at this at the expense of the taxpayers!
I was even more surprised, actually shocked would be a better choice of words, when I saw our own Representative, Dave Wolkins' name on the list. I trust Mr. Wolkins will be able to justify his choice - I trust that the other legislators will, as well. I hope, too, that other taxpayers, citizens and voters will express their concern, dismay and disgust at this misguided use of our financial resources and flagrant abuse of power.

Editor, Times-Union:I've been wanting to write for some time to express my appreciation for Gary Nieter's photographs in the paper. The landscape and nature images are often striking, and they capture what I most love about living in rural Indiana. I moved back here from California a couple of years ago, and I think next time someone asks me why I moved here, I will point them to the display of Mr. Nieter's photos on your Web site.
Even his documentary pictures of the daily car crashes are beautifully composed. They are informative and artistic at the same time. I don't follow the local sport scene, but I'm always impressed by his great shots of local athletes, again informative and beautiful.
I hope the community appreciates the contribution that Mr. Nieter and all of these images make to the quality of the local newspaper and to our lives in Kosciusko County.
Thank you, Mr. Nieter, and thank you, Times-Union.
