Act Of Kindness

Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is to a very kind-hearted and honest person. Sadly, I don't know their name. While thinking of everything I didn't want to forget that day, I had left my purse in the grocery cart I was using. I was sure that all of my belongings would be gone forever as well as my bank cards, credit cards, keys and cell phone. About a year ago my husband's wallet was stolen while we were living in Memphis, Tenn. By the time we reported it stolen, all of his credit cards were maxed, bank cards used and money gone. I couldn't think something so detestable could happen here in Warsaw. Much to my happiness, someone did find my purse, and they had taken it into the grocery store where I picked it up later that day. Whoever you are, this little act of kindness meant the whole world to me. Thank you for your thoughtfulness I hope others who read this realize a little bit of kindness goes a very long way!

Act Of Darkness

Editor, Times-Union:
We are encouraged to start a small business to help with the economy. Small business is fine until a coward steals from it. In the darkness of a person or person's heart, in the darkness of his or her mind and in the darkness of the night a brave coward came into our yard and stole my business sign (For Sale "Hand Painted China"). In my small business replacing the business sign is a big cost to me, a senior citizen who is trying to help with our income.

Listen here ... you brave coward, I want you to know I am still in business even though some of my neighbors thought I had gone out of business because they saw that the sign was gone. I would appreciate you returning the sign or paying for it so I can replace it. Thanks.

Winona Lions Building

Editor, Times-Union:
We have secured a meeting with the Town of Winona Lake's Board on behalf of the taxpayers, you, of Winona Lake. The meeting is to discuss the land at the end of Esplanade and West Canal streets. The Lions Club/Boy Scout Cabin sits on some of the property in question. There also is a platted street that runs through this land. If the street is vacated, the adjacent property owners would become the sole owners of this land, deeded to them and secured forever.

The town is to have papers stating their position and facts, as they know them, about the land available to taxpayers Monday. If you would like one, you can pick it up at the town hall.

We passed a petition around asking for a meeting concerning this matter. We got the meeting. Now we need you to come to the meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. Please do not rely on your neighbor to attend for you. We understand that this may be a hardship on you, but we need your help. We need all the taxpayers of Winona Lake at the meeting.

We have proposed that the town make a park, parking area or greenway rest area for people who walk and bike around this area. We are proposing a simple, relaxing area with a few benches to sit and enjoy the lake. However, the town board has told us that they would listen to any constructive proposals and comments. If you have other constructive plans, please come let us hear them. Now is your chance to be heard.

Walk around the area in question. Looking at the property, even with the Lions Building gone, do you not feel that we would benefit from a park with low lying landscaping to keep the view open to all people of the community?

Please attend this important meeting.

Telethon Volunteers Needed

Editor, Times-Union:
Richard Wagner has agreed to be the Pledge Center coordinator for the 2004 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. In Warsaw's continued support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Rice Ford has agreed to host the pledge center site for our upcoming telethon.

Over Labor Day weekend, Richard will organize all activities for the pledge center in Warsaw. This includes fielding all of the incoming calls for pledges during the telethon. He is in need of volunteers to answer phones. If you can volunteer, call Richard at 574-268-1784.

This year's telethon phone number is 574-267-8151. In addition to many other responsibilities, he will be trying to raise funds for the individuals served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

With your help, we will be able to continue providing services to individuals in Kosciusko County with muscular dystrophy.

Thank you for your assistance with the 2004 Warsaw Pledge Center. If you have any questions and/or need further information, feel free to call me at 260-486-6698.

Fighting For Freedom?

Editor, Times-Union:
I am curious. I wonder why people who talk about our soldiers in Iraq seem to often refer to them as "fighting for our freedom?" Did I miss something? Is Iraq the new 51st state? The last I heard our freedoms were in pretty good shape except for the attacks on the Bill of Rights by Attorney General Ashcroft. The fighting in Iraq don't seem to have much or any connection with our freedoms as far as I can see.

Also, every poll that is in the newspaper, news magazines or other media all point to Indiana as being firmly in the Republican column with Bush for president. If this is so, is there any reason for anybody except for a handful of people to vote in the upcoming election? If it is already a "given," why bother?

Another more local question I have is why is the local movie theater so shy about showing documentaries? I am speaking especially about "Fahrenheit 911." We are adults. We can think for ourselves. Can't we see it and make up our own minds without having to drive to some large city? Could this possibly be some conspiracy by local politicians to keep us in the dark?

CCAC Admission

Editor, Times-Union:
Last weeekend my son's softball team, along with dozens of other teams, some from out-of-state, played at the CCAC park in Warsaw. Many, if not most, of the teams played both Saturday and Sunday. I attended with my granddaughter and was surprised to find that we were charged $2 each at the entrance. Shortly afterward, when I had caught up with my son, I discovered that he, along with all the other players, had also been charged $2 each. My son has been playing in softball leagues over a decade and in many different towns and cities in Indiana and this is the first time that he had been monetarily charged before he could play. From all the complaints I heard while there from other players and spectators, this must be a practice unique only to Warsaw. And to add insult to injury, everyone was charged another $2 a head to get in on Sunday.

These softball teams pay the National Softball Association $200 to play, many have to purchase their own uniforms; some teams travel from other states to play and must buy gas to get here; and there's food to pay for and even lodging for those who play both days and are too far away to go home and return the next day. Then after arriving here, they must pay another $2 each before they can play is an insult. I know of at least three teams, including my son's team, who stated that they would never play in Warsaw again.

I've lived in Warsaw almost 14 years and was really looking forward to seeing my son and the other teams play here. I like Warsaw and had hoped to be able to tell my son and his teammates and spectators about some of the highlights and places of interest they could enjoy while here, but after hearing all the complaints and protests about the gate fee, I felt a little ashamed to even be attending the event. I don't know what the money is used for or who it goes to, but they should be ashamed. However that's probably not the case - they are probably smiling all the way to the bank.
