Coulter - Bad
Editor, Times-Union:The letter from Ted Carter about Ann Coulter was right on the mark. Coulter, a bombastic, linguistic bimbo does not even deserve to be termed an op-ed writer. However, you gave her opinions much more column space than your relatively fair editorial dealing with the Kerry record. This is exactly what those who have come out with the Kerry attacks want. The Vietnam record distorters only need to be heard to cause some people to wonder about Kerry. Not everyone who hears about the anti-Kerry ad will see rebuttals. This makes such ads effective especially in a year when small groups might determine the winner of the elections.
Records written near the time of the war using interviews with people who were with Kerry seem to indicate Kerry is telling the truth. I am amazed at how detailed some people have become in rebuttals of events of over 30 years ago. Most people have trouble with details from 30 minutes ago. Responsible journalists on the right and left and center seem to agree that the attacks are not based on facts.
Your editorial indicates you felt the question of Kerry's truthfulness in Vietnam is a question that needs to be answered because it goes to the heart of his integrity. If so, then the truthfulness of President Bush with respect to his service, with respect to some of his business dealings, with respect to some of his behavior 30 years ago should also go to the heart of his integrity.
Actually, I don't think any of the actions from the Vietnam era matter much. We are living in different times. We are in need of leaders who do not think as we thought 30 years ago. After all, it was thinking back then that led to actions that perpetuated the cold war and set up both Sadaam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.
If we have to choose our president based of recollections of 30-year-old events and not on the basis of thinking about current problems like war, health care, education and terrorism, we are in bad shape as a nation.

Silver Lake EMS
Editor, Times-Union:This is in reference to the letter that I wrote to you about South Central EMS in Silver Lake. I did something that I have told others not to do, listen to rumors. I want to apologize to Seward Township for my mistake.
In my letter I left out naming Seward Township as supporters of us. I heard that they were not going to support us anymore, so I omitted their name from the list of donors. I am very sorry that I did this and am writing this to publish that they do support us with $1,000 annually.
Again, I am very sorry, I do not want to leave anyone out. I also want to give my apology to Aime Hoffman, Seward trustee. And we are very grateful for all the support that is given to us. Next time, I will not listen to rumors, but will go right to the source.

Coulter - Not So Bad
Editor, Times-Union:Recent letters by Ted Carter, et al, have disparaged Ann Coulter's admittedly aggressive style of punditry, decrying her use of "conservative half-truths." I won't get into the merits of Coulter's arguments, but I encourage you to continue running Ms. Coulter's editorials, for the following reasons.
First, on a personal note, I don't want to be the only person whose political outlook annoys Ted Carter. Ted's a good friend, and being his most convenient target can get a little uncomfortable. Ann Coulter provides some cover.
Second, after years of enduring the screeching of Maureen Dowd, Anthony Lewis and others, Ann Coulter is finally providing an equally aggressive counter-attack from the right. I can understand how this may annoy the liberals. But if conservatives have to put up with the half-truths - and that's being generous - of Michael Moore and Al Franken, surely the liberals can endure a little Ann Coulter.
Finally, I would echo Ted's endorsement of the Annenberg Center site, factcheck.org, and his admonition that readers think for themselves. However, that doesn't mean we can't enjoy Coulter's histrionics every now and again. There's a difference between "telling you what you want to hear," as Ted says, and enjoying a column that expresses your point of view incisively and entertainingly.
Agreeing with a columnist doesn't necessarily mean you've not thinking for yourself. So I would encourage you to keep the sparks flying. Your readers should continue to have the opportunity to read Coulter's columns, guilt-free.

Affordable Housing
Editor, Times-Union:The Cardinal Center Development Corporation Board, or CCDC Board, has a mission to provide affordable housing options to low-income and disabled persons through the design and construction of facilities and through referral to other service providers. The first project of Cardinal Center Development Corporation, a joint project with Real America Development, was Pike Lake Pointe Apartments, a 64-unit affordable housing project located on Pike Lake in Warsaw. These apartments range from one bedroom to three bedrooms. Thirty-five percent of the apartments are leased to people with disabilities and 5 percent to the homeless. Each apartment comes with a washer and dryer along with all major appliances in the kitchen. Since opening in September 2003, every apartment has been filled and a substantial waiting list has been established.
Cardinal Center Inc. would like to thank the CCDC Board for all their efforts in making Pike Lake Pointe become a reality and for continuing to serve their community through this and other housing development efforts.

Price Of Gas
Editor, Times-Union:This morning I was listening to WRSW's CNN news at 7 a.m. and heard the barrel price of gas has dropped to around $43 a barrel. Warsaw gas prices are still up in the $1.95 range, where Fort Wayne and South Bend are both in the low $1.80s. Once again we are being gouged.
Just wanted to vent.
