Editor, Times-Union:Finally! Someone steps forward and solves the Middle East crisis (stop picking on Israel!), figures out why Bush's ratings are only slightly higher than Nixon's during Watergate (darn liberal press!) and simplifies decades of psychiatric advances to one word (nuts!).
Phyllis Barger, thank you for showing us the light.
And we have Phyllis to thank for reminding us that Bush is working "overtime" on the war on terror. Even though he is the most vacationed president in history, having spent more than a year of his presidency in Texas (including a month just prior to the 9/11 attacks even as the "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States" memo was circulating). I mean, he did cut his vacation short a few days after Hurricane Katrina ruined New Orleans. Not that he organized an emergency response until it was too late, nor had competent leadership in the right positions to begin with. But still, kudos to Bush - he works hard. Phyllis says so.
And Phyllis was absolutely correct about Bush not being a "warmonger." No, sir. Warmongers would never pre-emptively invade a country based on faulty intelligence, with minimal planning and against world opinion. And I think Phyllis would agree that the $307 billion (so far) has been far better spent watching a country devolve into civil war and chaos than had it been invested in America instead. I mean, we could have insured 184 million American children for a year, or paid for 5.3 million teachers, or provided four-year college scholarships for 14.9 million kids, but attacking a country that was not a threat was way more important. Invasion, destruction and occupation of a foreign land - as well as providing a new place and reason for terrorists to plot against us - is so hot these days. Bravo, Phyllis, for blindly defending the biggest foreign policy blunder in modern American history.
As a bonus, Phyllis has also instructed us on who we should kill (Andrea Yates) and scorn (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie). Much gratitude; sometimes I can't decide where to direct my hostility, and your pointers will help me place judgment appropriately. Because murdering murderers makes Jesus smile, and even though Pitt and Jolie have saved several children from lives of abject poverty and despair, they should be viewed as the bottomfeeders Phyllis knows they are. Good to hear that "compassion" and "love" are not earthly values anymore, either. Applause for Phyllis.
It's also interesting to see that you think banishment for out-of-wedlock birth is a "little" excessive; praise for being such a compassionate conservative, Phyllis. I mean, some religions might think that a "death by stoning" is in order, but you're so restrained in your judgment. Such a warm, loving, accepting role model, that's our Phyllis.
Sarcasm aside, Phyllis couldn't have said it any better than "...the U.S. has been taken over by a group of angry politicos."
Except I'm pretty sure that she and her brethren voted for them in the last election.

Morning-After Pill
Editor, Times-Union:If the deal is completed as planned, the Food and Drug Administration will soon allow the Plan B drug, also known as the "Morning-After" Pill, to be sold over-the-counter to women over the age of 18.Ê Politicians and organizations, including Planned Parenthood, have been pressuring the FDA to allow the over-the-counter distribution of this drug claiming that it will reduce unplanned pregnancies.ÊThe facts show that there are a lot of problems associated with the MAP as well as being ineffective at reducing abortions or pregnancies.
The MAP is a high dose of the birth control pill which requires a prescription to guard against serious implications such as blood clots. The FDA has never allowed a nonprescription status for a high-dose drug when a low dose of the same drug needs a prescription.
Countries that have already made the MAP nonprescription show no drop in pregnancies or abortions.ÊScotland made the MAP nonprescription in 1999.ÊIn 2005 the country reported its largest number of abortions since abortion was legalized in 1967.
In England where the MAP is available without a prescription, abortions increased from 176,000 in 2002 to 185,400 in 2004.ÊIn four years, sexually transmitted diseases skyrocketed. Cases of Chlamydia went up 76 percent, Gonorrhea went up 55 percent and Syphilis went up 54 percent.
Proponents of the MAP claim that the drug, when taken within 72 hours of sexual activity, will prevent pregnancy but won't have any effect if the woman is already pregnant.ÊSupporters of the MAP get around the pregnancy issue by changing the definition of "pregnancy" from fertilization of the egg (which is based on medical and scientific fact) to implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterine lining. The truth is that a woman can become pregnant within 30 minutes of intercourse.ÊThe MAP causes the lining of the uterus to harden, keeping the developing unborn child at the earliest stages of life from implanting in the uterus, thus killing the growing child.
Another problem with the MAP is that the plan to only distribute the drug to those over the age of 18 won't keep an adult from buying the drug and then giving it to an underage girl (without the parent's consent).
Pro-abortion lawmakers, led by Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Patty Murray, have put a hold on acting FDA commissioner Andrew Von Eschenbach's nomination as the head of the FDA until action is taken on Barr Pharmaceutical's request for OTC status of the MAP.ÊJust as they did with RU-486 (abortion pill), once again pro-abortion politicians and groups are putting their agenda ahead of the health of women.

Editor, Times-Union:I just read Charles Carne's letter titled "Right Wing Overload" and couldn't agree with him more!
I don't support the war but I can support the troops and their families. I hope that these soldiers can come home safely from this war whose catalyst was a pack of lies.
I hope the Democrats can take over this country once again to restore some sanity and common sense. Bush's administration had bungled every single issue they've come across since "W" came to power. Can you say FEMA? Leave it to the Democrats to start taking care of more important issues like the lack of national healthcare and the Social Security crisis.
Sure, we are under a "terror attack" - we have been for a long time. I don't live my life thinking al-Qaida is going to be the end of me. We need to get back on track!

Editor, Times-Union:On Aug. 15, 2006, the Times-Union printed an e-mail from a lady that wrote that she "just doesn't get it," and the remainder of her e-mail proves her right.
Perhaps a better understanding of the word "terrorist", "insurgent" or "guerrilla" would help. They are fighting a more powerful enemy.... Consider the Boston Tea Party, previous to our 1776 Revolution. To the English King they were terrorists. To the Colonists they were Patriots, or Freedom Fighters. So the label depends whether "they" are on "our side" or the "other side."
So why do many of the Islamic Middle-Eastern Arabic peoples believe the U.S. is an enemy? It has to do entirely with U.S. government interference in their political and religious affairs despite the fact that they are half a world away. For more than 60 years the U.S. has unilaterally supported the Jews (Israel) with money and military power. (Those bombs dropped on Lebanon and the planes that carried them were probably from the U.S.) Not enough people remember that the Jews - before the Jews usurped Arabic lands and declared the nation of Israel in 1948 - terrorized the Palestinians Arabs and their British military protectors until the British military "gave up" and retreated from the area. The Palestinians were left to the mercy of the Jews, who were not merciful. The Palestinians begged the United Nations for help. They were ignored. Palestinian Liberation Organization President Yasser Arafat finally got to speak before the United Nations in the 1970s. He told the world that the Jews had utterly destroyed hundreds of Arabic villages, had slaughtered untold thousands of Arabs, and had forced hundreds of thousands of Arabians into refugee camps (where they remain yet today). The world ignored the Arabian pleas.
Until President George W, the U.S. was somewhat covert in support of the Jews (Israel). However, George W made it very clear in his first speeches after being named president that he intended to overthrow the Arabic governments, and thus the (Islamic) religion. 9/11 wasn't the first action in a series. It was caused by previous actions. The Arabic peoples are impoverished as easily seen on TV. They appear to be fighting back as best they can. Obviously, they believe the U.S. is their enemy.
All right then, who's bad? The first example of genocide described in the Bible is when the Israelites attacked the city of Jericho and slaughtered every man, woman and child. Conquerors usually just killed the men and made the women and children slaves.
Am I anti-Jewish, anti-Semitic, as the Jews say? No way! I'm neutral. Remember that both the Israelites and the Arabic tribes are descended from the same family line including Abraham, Shem and Noah. According to the Bible, both sides are Semites. The Arabs and the Israelites are fighting a family feud. As a policy, I believe the U.S. should stop all aid to both the Israelites and the Arabs and pull out of their countries and let them fight it out.
