Leisure Reader
Editor, Times-Union:Just going over your Leisure Readers' Poll and it occurs to me that I can't vote for anything on the list, and I'm afraid many of my friends are in the same boat.
At the risk of being very politically incorrect I would add a few more categories, such as:
Best skeet club
Best trap club
Best rifle range
Best pistol range
Best archery range
Best shooting equipment dealer
Best hunting equipment dealer
Best fishing equipment dealer
Best archery equipment dealer
Best public hunting area
Best public fishing area
Just thought I'd mention it since between hunting, fishing and shooting probably at least 50 percent of the people in this area do one or more.

Editor's Note: Uh oh, guess we forgot the knitters, crocheters, herb growers, gardeners, sailors, skiers, bowlers, modelers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, racers, walkers, runners, aerobic exercisers, collectors, antiquers and kite flyers, too.
Salvation Army Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:On behalf of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, I would like to thank the Times-Union for assisting in promoting the Lucy Locket Luncheon and children's style show held recently at Rodeheaver Auditorium. As the result of the participation, dedication and hard work of many interested people, the Salvation Army School Worx program, an Army project which provides back-to-school clothing and shoes for low income families' children, was the recipient of the proceeds of the event. Owners of the children's store, Just for Kids, in the historic Old Train Depot, provided clothing and shoes for over 37 children and adults who modeled various apparel. Thanks to both the parents and children who participated in the style show and those who attended the luncheon.
A special thank-you to Grace College and Village at Winona for making possible to use the wonderful facilities at Rodeheaver Auditorium.

Raising Taxes
Editor, Times-Union:The state is going to raise our income tax, sales tax, gas tax and cigarette tax to lower our property taxes when the new reassessment next year raises them quite a bit.
Now the mayor wants to tack on to the property taxes a nickle a hundred for a cumulative capital development fund. What is it for - another building for the police, or maybe another motel for the work release, or maybe the mayor needs a new building?
The schools are short over a million dollars for the year, so that means another raise in taxes. By the time they are done, there won't be any property tax relief at all.
We already have to pay another $10 on our sewer bill and with more taxes the city wants, our little 2.6 percent increase on our Social Security doesn't pay it. Of course I realize they don't care as long as they get what they want.
By the way, I see the meter maid driving her little buggy by my house a couple of times a day. Since she has to drive clear from the east end of town to check the meters uptown, it might be a good idea to park it in the mayor's office at night and save a little gas money.

Customer Service
Editor, Times-Union:I recently went on a shopping trip. I shopped in Fort Wayne and Warsaw. I was very disappointed in the lack of customer service. No salespeople to see if I needed any help. This is a sure sign of a time change! Fifteen to 20 years ago, sales folks were there to help if needed. Wal Mart and Kmart are the only stores I can shop in for clothes and know someone is close by.
In my job, I give customer service willingly ... am I wrong to expect this as a customer?

Community Support
Editor, Times-Union:My name is Jason Bradford, I currently reside in Sacramento, Calif. Jon Evans is my uncle. He is my mother's (Patsy Torres) younger brother. I would like to personally thank you and the community for all the support you have shown to my uncle and his family. My fiancee and I went back to Indiana the weekend of July 26 - July 28. Unfortunately we were only able to stay the weekend because of work, but I'm glad we had the opportunity to go back and visit. It was the first time my fiancee got to meet my uncle and other family members, but I'm glad she got the chance. Dealing with the soon-to-be loss of my uncle has been very hard, not just on me and my fiancee, but everyone in the family. Knowing that he is living in a town that has no problem taking time out of their day to show support for him and his family means a lot to me and everyone else in the family. So once again, I would like to thank you and the rest of the community for your wonderful support.
